So I tried playing AC Black Flag AFTER Skull & Bones...

- Much has been said about Skull & Bones up until this point, but now it's time to take a look at Assassin's Creed IV once more with that experience in mind. To this day, this ship faring adventure is arguably the best pirate game on the market.

I love how rocksteady released a new game, and it made everyone wanna go play the game they made a decade ago instead…. And Ubisoft released a new game, and it made everyone wanna go play the game they made a decade ago lol
And some people did.
I know this might not be the greatest measure but if you look at steam charts and Arkham Trilogy each game had a spike at around time SSKTJL was released, the biggest one for Arkham Knight which today had more than 2 times the player count in comparison to SSKTJL.
I myself decided to finally get Arkham Origins the chance (it was not received as well as Rocksteady games) and I have to say I have fun with it (this one sat in my backlog for a long time).
@@mravg79
Arkham Origins turned out to be my personal favorite of the 5 games released in the series at that time. I absolutely loved it. Hope you enjoy it!
People been playing blackflag and Arkham Knight before none of them decided to release this trash.
Since almost all industries are taken over by wokesters and corporate overlords who just want a quick cash grab, the AAA gaming industry is in such a bad shape right now.
Completely agree. Skull and bones just made me want to go play black flag lol
Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag is easily by far the best pirate game ever made.
I haven't played Black Flag, though I've obviously heard good things about it. For me, Sid Meier's Pirates! is a timeless masterpiece.
@@WolfyRagnarokThat game hit a loop and broke when I clocked it. Black Flag will break your brain it’s epic
@@WolfyRagnarok
Yes I agree Sid Meier's Pirates Gold was the best pirate game that is until Black Flag came out.
@@WolfyRagnarok with more realistic ship physics!
Try Port Royale 3, get yourself a fleet of ship of the lines. I'm going to try Tortuga soon after hearing good things about that.
This is one of those games that I’ve played through 3-4 times, but still think about replaying at least once a month
Honestly ruined the rest of the AC games for me. This game is just so good IMO.
@@Chtsht23You should try Origins it's made by the same team that made Black Flag
@@irecordwithaphone1856 I made an attempt. Lol I couldn’t get into it.
@@Chtsht23it’s more like an RPG but to be honest BF was RPG too. It’s putting an effort to the combat rather then it being smash button kill enemy. It feels. Way more open, then black flag. Even tho the black flag world is bigger. I liked Origins, never finished it fully. But it has nice things. Black Flag. Still my favourite of the franchise.
@@justareguralcitizen9492 it was the combat that threw it off for me. I’m an OG, new combat in AC didn’t sit well for me. I was always the stealthy type.
Even Blackbeard didn’t mess with the great Edward Kenway
This was my first AC and I went in 100% blind, and it was an unforgettable experience. I was shocked the first time I was taken out of the Animus because I had no idea that there would be sci-fi elements. Masterpiece
Please don’t say the out of animus experience was a masterpiece. U haven’t played the first games and how fleshed out and care was put into that aspect
@@theprodigalson4003 No sorry 😂 The game overall. The Animus was far from perfect but it was special the first time because I wasn't expecting it
@@grayjedi-117
Play AC2 and Brotherhood! And Rogue! The best games in the series. Then black flag. Rogue is the better story version of Black Foag
Skull and bones is quite literally just the ship combat of black flag but worse. You could go on one of those flash game websites and find more content
It is literally a ship combat game, only ships
To be fair that’s all it was ever said to be.
@@5hrimp_Nachos No, It was said to be a add-on to black flag but turned into an actual game. Sooooo where is the black flag part that was supposed to be in black flag?
@@DivineSwordEscanor you don’t pay attention. When it was announced as a game it was always naval battle focused. You can’t refute that because that’s facts. I’m not talking whatever it may have been conceptually. Always naval battle. If you expected more then you played yourself 😂
L
Its insane that Ubisoft took 1/3rd of their 11 year old game, made it worse in nearly every way, and sold it for $70 with countless microtransactions.
How......did we get here?
Greed and no creed.
We got here because people keep buying their games even when it became trash.
its the consumers fault the industry is in this state
@@lukecotton3076No it's not
@@irecordwithaphone1856 Yes it is.
Casual gamers are the ones pouring hundreds in microtransactions. That's why every studio and their mothers are pushing out garbage live service games.
I love black flag. One of the best narratives in the series. If they remake it I hope they don’t change much apart from the frame rate and Graphics etc.
I loved how they further evolved the ship combat with rogue and even let you capture ships and build a fleet.
"i lost count at 40". Is one of my favorite lines in Black Flag. Edward ask Blackbeard how many canons his ship has.
I installed Black Flag today after 10 years. Can't believe how good it still looks. A
Black Flag is one of the greatest games of all time let alone AC games!

This man here, SPEAKING FACTS.
Your channels are the only channels on youtube I still make sure to watch every video for even if i have never played the game, just because I love watching your videos and hearing your passion for it. Keep it up, thank you for your content.
Black Flag has a special place in my heart. I remember going to FYE at my mall, and going home to a new TV that I had saved up for and played in HD for the first time. The game IS beautiful to this day even. I almost have it 100% and hope to do it one day
The 360 era was the golden age of gaming I remember being excited to preorder a game now it's meh.
For AAA, most definitely and its really when alot of series/studios that today are seen as greedy, generic and rehashing the same thing actually came into their own and innovated.
CoD really became part of the cultural conversation with CoD 4, then pushed it farther with WaW(particularly zombies) and MW2. Assassins Creed 1-4 are all 360 era, and ubisoft set the ground work for far cry with far cry 2(my favorite) and then FC3 which is largely regarding as the best. Bioware was king of their market with Dragon age and Mass effect. Even on pc this era was the golden age of World of Warcraft.
Though I think the AA and indie golden era is now and has been for a few years. In 360 era the only indie game that was really well known was probably minecraft, which is no longer an indie game.
Especially recently smaller games are getting much more recognition, while the larger games tend to have lukewarm reception at best. Just in the last 3 months there were 3 absolute breakout AA/indie games in lethal company, palworld and helldivers. Plus the entire rogue-like genre is almost exclusively dominated by indie/aa games.
Black Flag is the greatest AC ❤
And it aint even close 👊
Unity would like a word.
@@Travis371Unity belongs to the worst of the AC list.
@@thesaint717 Unity had the best graphics, the best atmosphere, the best combat and the best parkour.
@@Travis371 Combat was an inferior and slower version of 4 and 3, parkour was over-exaggerated and no real depth other than flashy animations , its insistence on playing online was really annoying and immersion-breaking, atmosphere was nice tho.
Terrible launch cemented its bad reputation, and it still has game-breaking bugs.
At least it’s better than every AC game that came after it, but worse than every AC game that came before it.
It’s a mixed bag.
Ac4 will always hold a special place in my heart being my introduction to the series. I’m glad it was too, because immediately when I realized there were more games before it bought 3 and never looked back
Just did the exact same thing my dude! Fantastic game still.

Ubisoft when Black Flag came out was like the end of the 1st Pirates of the Caribbean movie when Jack got the Black Pearl back and it was epic and now Ubisoft post Skull and Bones is like the start when Jack is on the sinking dingy and steps off as it's goes under. Only I'm not sure they'll get off. May just go down with their ship lol
I just got Black Flag a few days ago and after about 10 hours I absolutely love it. The Skull and Bones beta left me wanting.
You'll love the ending. The whole arc for Edward was pretty well done.
Got a Skull & Bones ad before this video started. Lol
I always loved ac3 mostly because I'm American and the setting felt more personal but still love the game and just beat the remaster a few months ago... for me it's odyssey black flag and ac3 as my favorites
Genuine question.... what makes odyssey ur favourite?
The only thing that feels weak are the constant tailing missions and the typical AC combat. But it still feels like a fresh game, 11 years later. Such a great game and beautiful ending.
I acknowledge the issues with the chain-killing but I feel that it works in this game. Pirate combat is supposed to be flashy and quick. Like, imagine doing ship boarding with Unity's combat.
@@unc54 I understand that, at the end it's the sums of its parts that makes this game epic. But I think a combat system like Brotherhood, without the infinite chain kills, would've been a great compromise.
We were in Old Town San Juan yesterday and my kid and I are like this is some Black Flag stuff here. There was a fort that totally looked like it in the harbor. It’s cool to cruise by on electric scooters.
I want a Pirates of the Caribbean game like this game
Same
That close-up of Anne Bonny walking. You can't do that to me.
This is one of my favorites of the AC market, I love the sailing and story, the way it plays with this playable connection with the Hathem to Conner. So anyone who played the others knows who the "donor" memories are from.
I just bought it few hours ago on my steam deck haven’t played it since Xbox 360 days this shxt is good the first boat part when you first get your ship and escape was dope and the music big waves and ship battle all at the same time was epic.
I just did the same, but some reason it’s making me log into Ubisoft connect. I can’t get the keyboard to pull up when it requests login. Really want to play the game. Am I just gonna have to find a Bluetooth keyboard? Apologies I just got my steam deck.
Excellent video! Appreciate the credit.
I absolutely loved the cell phone mini game they integrated with black flag. I honestly miss that more than most games.
Black Flag is honestly one of the most immersive games I've ever played. As much as I love the Ezio trilogy and consider those games to be the heart & soul of the franchise, Black Flag offered something with its open world that none of the other games truly did. I wanted to sail the open sea, I wanted to explore the islands, I wanted to look up at the sky when the stars were out in the middle of the freaking ocean. And most of all, I wanted to continue my progression with updating my ship to take on bigger enemy ships for a larger loot. It's honestly and simply a fun game that Ubisoft never made again.
I bought ac black flag for 10 bucks about a month ago. I played through it way back when it first came out. Still a pretty good game and it's stood the test of time. A good old pirate romp with some AC weirdness on the side.
gush i've just rememberred how much i loved that game!!.Specially the Habana bit, which is home for me. It's really incredible how they devolved the whole ship mechanics in every sense.
Black flag was the peak of assassins creed
what is that lofi remix of the ac theme?! thats so nice!
lol i turned up my audio for that
My favorite thing was whalehunting and bounties, but whale hunting felt soo good, so satisfying after you got the hang of it, I felt bad everytime I finished a spot, because they didn't respown. Even liberty cry had that which made it good, it was a smaller black flag.
I always felt bad killing the whales, but it was a very cool thing that they could never do now adays.
@@-.Germanicus.- I never felt bad, because I knew it was a game, I am not Ok with the idea of it IRL but in games , GO AL LTHE WAY! like Piracy, IRL bad , In game "YAAAARRRRR!"
I bloody love this game. Part of my childhood when first playing xbox and the ship mechanic was my personal favourites that made me enjoy this game more then the most. Id listen to the shantys build a fleet of HMS only ships and challenging myself all the time. Maybe i should do a gameplay on it.
This was my first ac and i loved it. Edwards character development and also th character reveal. (You know who im talking about)
I have much nostalgia for the beginning of that generation of consoles snd the games with it, even though it got better as time went on
To be honest, I used to game 15 hours a week minimum 10 years ago. Games are so crap now (save for the indie scene) that I may game 3 hours a month if I'm lucky. The last game that I paid for full price for was Cyberpunk. It's gotten so bad that I don't care anymore and honestly no longer consider myself a gamer.
Assassin's Creed Unity and Origins is my favorite when it comes to combat.
The best thing about both Black Flag and Syndicate was that you could play the world story quests and mostly ignore the animus thing 😊. In BF you played a pirate and did pirate stuff. Syndicate you played a gang leader taking over territory and other gang related stuff while meeting cool people like Bell and Dickens. If Ubisoft ditched the assassin’s creed theme, they could still do a good job at creating semi historical games.
Seeing your first man o war brings a chill to your body.
I use to do a bunch of freelance writing for various websites - I’d make like $20 a piece, not much.
The first publisher to reach out to me was actually Konami.
I still have my copies of Silent Hill Downpour and SH: Collection for PS3.
I’m far removed from all of that now, but it was a big deal when I first received them!
You make me want to play Black Flag again.
Great game
wow, I'm not the only one that goes back to that game eh?
Black flag was my first introduction into ac my sister played the first ones but I didn’t get into it till black flag loved it so much its the only ac I completed 100%
Black Flag is my fave AC game. My parents bought it for me with a PS4 as a gift for passing my driving test. I was always 1 trophy off the platinum due to the awful online mode! 😂
Great video man keep it up🎉 When are you going to do FF13 Lighthing returns?
2013 is retro now?
I'm old
I highly recommend giving Sid Meier's Pirates! a try. Wonderful game.
Just bought this on a steam sale because I wasn't really sure on skull and bones.. It's so fun! Can't believe I didn't play this when it came out.
Yeah!
Them jaguars were ruthless 😅
My All time favorite AC due to the Story and just the first time you could enjoy the pirate life
Black Flag is the best pirate game since Sid Mier’s Pirates Gold 😊
This thumbnail looks like Matty is embarrassed to tell Edward that he played an inferior version of AC Black Flag 😂
even if its just me... i played the game 4 times it was fun enough i didnt need to go buy more games...one thing i recall was when you got up to high part of your job building and could look out over the city below i thought it would be mildly cool if they let the player drive there car from rented house to the job building if they ever remade the game as a way to make a fun change rather then just staying in the building
They should have saved themselves ten years and just given us a Black Flag remaster instead, it would have been way more impressive than what we got.
I heard they're in the process of remaking AC Black Flag already... here's to hoping they don't screw that up lol
I did the same thing. I played Ubisoft’s new quadruple-A Boat Simulator open Beta, and it just made me want to play a good pirate game, so i started playing Black Flag. lol
I just played through black flag for the first time (i have the game since release but the furthest I got was like sequence 7 and got lost in side activities). The story starts out great, but gets a bit weird during sequence 10 up to the end. That entire laser walls thing and the weird abstergo thing (i still dont understand that subplot) was a bit edgy and too much. Overall black flag is exactly what a pirate game should be like. World design is good, story is okay, fighting is good, character Control is a bit wonkey but whats the greatest thing is: sailing and naval combat. Thats where this game shines like a diamond
are there at least devil fruits?
One thing I like about black flag is that they let us roam 90% of the map pretty early unlike many games.
Ive been playing Black Flag for a week now and could swear the graphics have been updated or its just way better than I remember
What they should have done is remake Black Flag (i know that's currently planned) and as part of that remake, greatly enhance the ship combat. Then add in a multiplayer mode like GTA Online. So you've got a bunch of players with their own ship's using the new Black Flag map, building out the multiplayer experience from there. So for $70 you get the Black Flag remake and the new Black Flag online. Would have taken 1/3 of the time and money to make and could have been way way way more popular.
Can’t believe they took away boarding the enemy ship in skull and bones some of the most fun in AC black flag is climbing up the sails and air assassinating them
My only problem with Black Flag is that people talk as if it's the first Assassin's Creed with ship combat & the only game with ship combat. I also drifted apart from the series, but found a place selling the ultimate version of Odyssey for $40 & couldn't pass up on the deal. While the ship combat wasn't as fleshed out as Black Flag, I still really enjoyed that part of the game.
All Skull & Bones had to do was be more Black Flag. It would have been derivative, but would have released much earlier & probably sold better.
Black Flag was my favorite AC game. I was excited for Skull and Bones and pre-ordered it. Then I played the beta, I canceled the pre-order and bought Black Flag for $10 on the series X, I saved myself $60 and got a much better game.
I played this game a lot on 360 I even played it in a motel
I have never played any assassin creed game before but I’ve been eyeing black flag for a while
playing black flag again now, but assassins creed 3 was my favorite
Is that Edward's voice at the beginning?
So since late January I've been playing AC black flag on switch it runs great and I've been having so much fun.
I read somewhere they are redoing this Black Flag for new Generation consoles. That would be cool.
Fans on BLack FLag: Oh wow ship battles are fun!!!!
Ubisoft: You heard them guys, lets make a new pirate game!
Ubisoft Team: How do you want us to design the world?
Ubisoft: The world? Didn't you hear the fans, they want ships.
Edward Kenway! One of my favorite game characters and the best pirate game out there!
Anyone reading this, how long does it take to get to the fun pirate/open world boat stuff in AC4?
An hour..
Getting the damn game to work is the hardest part, at least on PC. Won't run without UPlay, even if bought on Steam, and won't stop alt tabbing itself out once it runs. Still haven't solved tye issue yet.
It's just a paint to get working
The one thing both games have in common - by the time your ship is nearly "maxxed out" - youve done everything, and when you get that ship decked out to the maximum, youve got nothing to do.
It is for me by far the best AC game they made and by far the best pirate themed game ever made. I for one really enjoyed the story of it, meeting all of those famous pirates from history was awesome and ship combat sure was arcade-y but it felt impactful and realistic enough to where it was really enjoyable. AC III and Rogue had that as well in smaller part but Black Flag really perfected ship combat. It is why i was quite disappointed with Skull and Bones. They had previously managed to do ship combat so well and yet ten years later it turned out to be a worse version of it in pretty much every way, where Black Flag still managed to be fairly realistic, S&B abandoned all of that for flashy explosions and mediocrity
Same and im loving every second
"Where's the evolution?"
The evolution could have been advanced ship mechanics like letting you steal the wind out of a ship you're chasing down sails and a tacking system with prevailing winds on certain routes. A much more involved tropical island that you could turn into pirate Stardew Valley and where you could rule with the iron fist of Tom Nook, with all your captured merchantmen and pirates forced into Palworld hard work mode slavery, a haven for freebooters and chaos a la Tortuga, or an idyllic tropical paradise. Or even full on supernatural curses and OG tomb raider style of tombs to explore.
I've put off playing Black Flag. Assassin's Creed never really grabbed me, and it felt weird to try the franchise so many games in. The more I see and hear of it lately, though, I'm convinced I'll love this one.
You don't need very much context to play Black Flag although it does include AC lore it's introduced pretty organically. The only thing that would be a problem is the modern day segments
Yeah this one was always a surprise for me. I'm one of the people who slandered AC3, I remember thinking Revelations was okay but not as good as AC2 or ACB, then 3 I just flat out didn't like...so I was worried I was starting to get to that point where the series wasn't doing it for me anymore, but AC4 brought the love back! I've played the entire series (except Chronicles and Mirage, but I'm getting there), and ended up buying all the PS4 ports and remasters, and have (very) slowly been working my way back through them...I just got the Platinum in the PS4 version of Revelations in December. So AC3 Remastered is up next, and that will be a second chance adventure there...to see if maybe it's not as bad as I thought it was in 2012. Then I'll have AC4 again after that. And now there's talk of Ubisoft remaking AC4...so there may be a third platinum for it in my future.
I got to play in one of the pre-release tests for Skull & Bones and was so disappointed that it didn't measure up to the quality of Black Flag. I was really hoping that they would've carried forward from those ideas into Skull & Bones, being the inheritor and maturity of those systems, all pulled together into an adventure that you didn't want to end. Remembering the Abstergo story from Black Flag, it wasn't that it wasn't a bad chapter for the modern day adventure, but that it was dwarfed so much by the story and immersion into the pirate world. I think they had unknowingly created a giant mansion or palace, but the middle class home they placed next to it, while beautiful in its own standing, just looked like an unwanted shack because of what it was being compared to. Unfortunately, no, Skull and Bones is not a 4A game. It's nice and has some good features, but next to Black Flag, it is yet another stamped out Middle Class home of mediocrity. If anything, Black Flag was the 4A game and Skull and Bones is the 2A game.
I'm glad everyone is going back in their libraries revisiting older games.
You can appreciate their quality now among the current 🗑️🔥 produced today
It’s just so weird that there’s so much less features in Skull and Bones than Black Flag especially since it’s the same company that made both.
I have a (maybe) hot take about Black Flag, that it should have been a completely new IP.
The main feature of BF is the refined naval combat of AC 3, which is a BIG deppart from the previous games gameplay and identity.
Boots-on-the-ground exploration and combat take a secondary role and don't require many changes from the established formula (none of which are exclusive to AC, as they were refined from the Prince of Persia games to begin with).
The amazing narrative would be just as good with 0 connections to the larger Assassin's Creed story and narrative, it would be possible to remove or swap out all of the AC content and not actually change the plot.
I think Ubisoft wasted the opportunity to create an entirely new franchise, they even had relative safety considering that many players praised AC 3's naval minigame at the time.
Its like $8 on PlayStation right now and I have never played Black Flag, should I get it?
Yes. Good deal and a good game. I'd buy it for 20$
I would still buy it at 70$ .. Thats how good this game is
@@Mordred_SSR don't give ubisoft any ideas lol
One of my favorite games ever
This game taught me gunblades existed in human history. Was it good? No. Is it cool? Youre damn right.
Kinda feels like they made Skull & Bones as if Black Flag didn't exist and none of us had ever played it. If we went from AC3 to S&B then it'd kinda fit but there's a decade plus that *happened* which they've seemingly ignored.
in my opinion Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag is the most memorable AC Game, the only thing that I didn't really cared for when it came to the ship stuff is, I'd capture all these ships but I couldn't use them personally I would have loved to be able to use a ship of the line.
I didn't mind the ship mini game, but I didn't really care for it either, I think for me it would have been funner to actually be able to see them in my world instead of oh here's a 2d piece of s***
Black Flag and GTA V came about the same time. Had them both: GTA V on console and Black Flag on PC. Preferred Black Flag all the way.
I played Skull and Bones, could not get past lvl 2. The good thing about that game is I wanted to play Black Flag again, they should of did a remaster of it, instead of doing Skull and Bones. Black Flag is the best in My opinion, they need to Make an update for it, for new gaming systems.
The multiplayer for the game is still alive! the servers are still alive! SAVE BLACK FLAG!
Incredible skull and bones 🤣🤣🤣
Ac 4 is trending now
I love assassin's Creed. The games were a huge part of my gaming childhood (yeah my mom allowed me to play them). Black flag is my least favorite of the traditional ACs. The pirates and ships simply didn't ring a bell for me. I enjoyed Rogue very much though, that one was similar, but didn't lean into ships that much
