Special occasion is worthy of special experience. I chose to celebrate my 20th birthday onboard Japan Airlines' first class while en route from Tokyo to New York.
This 12 hours transpacific is unlike any other flights I had taken. The celebratory spirit began the moment I arrived at the airport and was ensued by a "cake" presentation in the lounge as well as a full celebratory activity once airborne. The impeccable hospitality of Japan Airlines' staff extends from the ground onto 35,000 feet and through collective effort, made my birthday flight a seamless and cheerful one.
Japan Airlines' first class product is a competitive way to cross the Pacific ocean partly because of its easy accessibility using Alaska miles. In addition, flying on JAL is every foodie's dream. I had the pleasure to sample dishes from three Michelin three starred restaurants while onboard and that breaks my personal record of collecting six stars in a day.

I'm right there with you wanting to take all that stuff home with me. 😊 I was surprised to see they didn't load extra meals so everyone could get their choice. They seemed to do that in the past, so I wonder if they've cut back because of COVID. Glad you had a great birthday at 38,000 feet. Safe travels!

I'm taking this flight on June 11th in 1K and can't wait! First time ever taking international First, and only made possible thanks to Alaska miles making first class only a 10k point premium over business. Otherwise I'd never do it.
It seems you can actually preorder the Japanese menu if you want - this might be a good idea. I'm not a fan of what I've seen with the regular menus, so I'm taking my chance with one of the special meals - VLML. I'm an extremely picky eater - albeit the stuff I don't like is very easy to get around. That said, VLML is very much a shot-in-the-dark. It can either be amazing (as I've encountered on Brussels Airlines JFK-BRU and on SAS out of Stockholm) or crap.
At 20 , I was riding at the back of the bus pretending I was in a limousine. Now at 50 , I fly business most of the time. Great review !

He redeemed a Japan Airlines First Class award using Alaska Miles. There is a community of people who play the system by churning credit cards, taking advantage of sign up bonuses etc. to get the miles.

The need for a longer cable is very true. Having flown in that exact chair several times over the past few months, I had to invest in a longer cable specifically for flying JAL. It’s certainly a first world problem, but for the cost one would expect them to provide a cable, if only on loan.

its a long flight but flying in first class will make the flight easier and more confortable
Such a shame they didn’t have enough food for 2 people In first class. I would totally understand if it’s economy, but it’s first class and it’s your birthday.
