Sandy Golden is speaking out for the first time in more than two decades about her estranged relationship with her famous daughter, Tonya Harding. She says they haven't spoken or seen each other since 2002. Their tumultuous relationship is being thrust back into the national spotlight in the highly anticipated movie "I, Tonya." Golden admits being tough but says she was never abusive. She says she worked three jobs to pay for Tonya's training and even sewed her costumes by hand. #InsideEdition
Abusive parents almost always never recall any of the things they've done after the abuse is over.
Very true. They have a disease called "selective amnesia." LOL
Forget??? All I know is that I certainly have not forgotten.
Yup it would hurt them tooo much.
Or it was done out of love, or a motivational tactic, or it wasn't THAT bad, or she's not remembering it right, or...
Too right. Not only do they not recall, but they'll find a way to play the victim in it all if they're cornered. They'll make you feel guilty or crazy if you distance yourself from their abusive behavior.
Abusive parents tend to lie and deny. They see nothing wrong with what they do.
Totally
Lie Deny and Justify 🤙
Yup. Anyone who’s abusive physical and/or emotionally will find every excuse in the book, play victim and/or make it seem the actual victim is over reacting. Freaking sociopaths. I’ve dealt with a few sociopaths cuz I used to be a pushover. They look for those kind of people and when it’s your child, my god I’m so sorry for those kids.
All abusive people do that
Exactly. They will always make the children out to be the one at fault.
How ironic that when the writer for ‘I, Tonya’ tried to contact her to interview her for the script, she declined but now that the movie is getting attention, she speaks out
Right on the $$$ comment.
GYR O probably loads and she’s denied all of them until now, when the film is getting attention and making money - thanks for proving my point further
Kimberly actually Allison confirmed that in an interview about the movie
Margot lololol if that was actually margot Robbie on CZcams channel responding to an inside edition video 😂
Kimberly what is actually wrong with you
The moment she said “ she hates me, period” Without breaking down I knew there was something wrong with this woman because no mother could take their child hating them like it’s no problem at all
She started crying at the end when she was talking about see her and her grandchild she's probably just used to it by now
When she said that I was like “hmmm wonder why…”
They can if the hate is mutual
Stay in jail
Just because a person doesn’t show emotion doesn’t mean they don’t care. She was a hard working mom. Those were different times and different parenting.
Her mom is playing the victim, no child no matter how puberty is treating them wakes up and says " I'm just not going to talk to my mom for 15 years " that's doesn't happen .
Yassi Roman yes! this comment
We don't know the full story. Things could be wrong on both sides. Maybe tonya also got aggressive with her mother.
Yassi Roman exactly
But where does almost ALL of the aggression in children come FROM? A PARENT'S example or worse actual abuse.
Other people noticed the abuse even back in the 80's when people didn't report things.
Yassi... Tonya's mom... SPOILED that little monster...
Her mother worked 3 jobs to give that spoiled, rotten, BRAT
her skating dream... and UNGRATEFUL TONYA is UNAPPRECIATIVE!!!!!!
Jesus preached, "forgiveness." Tonya is a spoiled, rotten son of a bee hive...
She's wearing that Snapchat filter

Allison Janney nailed it so hard -- she won a goddamn OSCAR for it!
Allison Janney always nails it
Right?!? Nail on the head! lol
I couldn’t believe it was the same person. Wow, what a transformation. The same goes for Margot.
Yooo wierd seeing you here Nick from Rev3games
Even as she's saying "Is that supposed to be me? That doesn't even look like me..." she's saying it in Allison Janney's voice. How deliciously ironic lol
!!!! lol
This is exactly what I thought
... almost as if they copied her.
well it's in her own voice, isn't it. the actress just nailed it

This woman abused her daughter.
CJ Hobbes she looks like an abuser but she worked hard I guess to make toya famous skater it cost a lot for lessons
CJ Hobbes You saw her abuse her?
CJ Hobbes For sure!
Matt W other people did
Matt W bruh it’s so easy to prove it, you can tell through her expressions and verbal abusing during the competitions
"She was sweet back then." What a lovely thing to say about your daughter. Classic narcissist only thinking of herself and her own feelings, i.e., "what about me?" What a piece of work. I am glad Tonya finally found happiness. Leave her in peace.
I love how you try to tell this woman about her own experiences with HER daughter even though you have NEVER MET EITHER OF THEM…..that seems presumptuous and arrogant of you…..
trinigrl09 those of us who have gone through abuse ourselves can see the classic narcissist traits...
trinigrl09 self-centered individual right here!
trinigrl09 you're the one that comes off as arrogant, take your naive ass and sashay away
shaylen sanders amen sister
Her mistake as she stated, "I did everything so Tanya would love me more". As a parent, you do things for your kids because YOU LOVE THEM.
Textbook Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Tonya's mother left her family when Tonya was in high school. Tonya lived with friends after that. Her mother was married six times. Tonya's dad was her 5th husband. She walked out on her family to marry husband number 6. People at the rinks where Tonya skated heard how her mother yelled at Tonya, her coaches knew that her mother abused her. It was no secret. She only wants back in Tonya's life now because she thinks there will be money from the movie.
I saw the movie today,I loved it!!!
her mother did pay for her lessons .. and bore her, the Bible says to love and honor your parents..
The Bible also said eating shellfish and wearing clothes of mixed fabrics were sins! Your point?!?!
the Bible also tells advice for parents too...why abusive people never mention that? They just want their victims obey the Bible?
Love and honor someone who beats you? Who sabotaged you, who abused you emotionally as well? To the point where you been driven crazy, and see the world in HER mother's messed up view, when once it was innocent?
Her mother destroyed her, and is a big part of her downfall, not uprising.
The "poor mom" look , isn't cute. Lol you can tell she's a master manipulator, why would anyone even do an interview with her? There's nothing credible coming out of that mouth.
Spilled milk, baby
lovinliverpool master manipulator just like her daughter.
What LaVona is doing is what a lot of abusers do when their victim breaks free from them. She is trying to make Tonya look bad and make other people hate her, hence try to break her again.
ACETYGRA I agree 100%. Classic tactic.
@@ACETYGRA Everyone here undrstands that.
I was abused by my mother and she said the same exact things that Tonya's mother said in this interview. She's too old to be looked at as evil or to be corrected now, but I vow to never be that way to my child.
Old people can be quite vindictive and mean
My parents were control freaks and cruel to their children. I would not allow my daughter to be around them and it was for a good reason.
Never too old to have a boundary set.
She hits and insults her daughter and then wonders why her daughter is far away with no contact to her. Lol, just lol...
And the mother is not qualify to be a grandmother.
If people got disciplined like this nowadays, then there would be less thugs. If there is any at all..
Kaitlyn McKessy there’d be plenty of thugs, they’d just be called parents.
@@kaitlynmckessy4250 really? My dad was “disciplined” like this and turned out to be a criminal. How wonderful. Also there’s just as much thugs in your time as mine. Believe it or not.
@@kaitlynmckessy4250 Discipline is not the same as abuse, dearie.
I believe Tonya. Her mom is as cold as ice.
Why do I always feel sorry for Tonya, like I just can't hate her. I think she was troubled and driven mad.
QUEEN.
Same, she went through hell all throughout her life and when she finally starts to succeed she gets dragged down again.
Donn Godfather Exactly. Same here.
please don't use such words as ''mad'', it's wrong and stigmatizing. she was traumatized not mad.
If she actually cared about Tonya she wouldn’t be making this about her getting victimized, and badmouthing Tonya as someone who is ungrateful and hateful. She would be saying I hope one day Tonya can forgive me for what I’ve done to her, but if she doesn’t I can understand and respect that too.
Abc xyz And she wouldn’t be sitting there, looking like she robbed a clothing drop in Hollywood.
@@kitty62862 then tripped into a load of potted plants nearby.
This ^^^ I can always remember an interview with actor Ryan O'Neal where he addressed the fact that his daughter Tatum O'Neal no longer spoke to him. He acknowledged that he hadn't been a good dad and said that if Tatum no longer wanted to have anything to do with him, he would fully support that because he wanted her to do whatever she needed to do to help her heal, even if it meant he'd never see her again. Now contrast that with Tonyas mother.

My mom does it all the time
😢😢😢 I'm sorry 😔😔😔 to hear that . I hope your doing okay now 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 god bless
"She hates me. Period."
She has a right to feel that hatred.
This interview doesn't make her any more sympathetic. You can tell how cold and clinical she is by how she speaks.
Cynical?
Knez Fikol clinical as in sterile and lacking warmth
She wants what every malignant narcissist wants: pity.
@@FlutterMouse cynical has nothing to do with sterile though.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 CLINICAL WITH AN L as in a Clinic . Not CYNICAL. Geez.
I love how she say "is that me? She doesn't even look like me". And if you see the documentary from 1986, she literally looks like her in the movie
Children do not naturally hate their parents but rather bend over backwards to please the parents from infancy on. The reason Tanya hates this woman is because the mother is a narcissistic, abusing piece of work. I am glad the movie is coming out in a few weeks because it will highlight how Tanya, the child was abused by Sandy. It is my sincere hope that Tanya and her husband keep Sandy away from their child. Abusive parents always try to blame the child when the child breaks their silence about the abuse. I believe in this case, there were lots of witnesses to Sandy's abuse and her character. Tanya's problems in life and her shortcomings all stem from her abuse at the hands of this awful mother. I am looking forward to the movie but know that I will have an especially difficult time watching the scenes where little girl Tanya is emotionally and physically abused by this witch.
exactly. There is no one in the world that a child loves and forgives more than their mother. It takes a Lot for a child to reach the point where they can't forgive anymore.
thank you this helped me a lot
Reading these comments reassures me about my own situation. Abusers always make it seem like it's not a big deal and can't understand why their child hates them. I'm glad Tonya realized it was wrong and spoke out.
@@carly4422 ...and their father.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 definitely! (I should have said there's no one a child trusts, loves, & forgives more than their parents).
“She doesn’t even look like me”. Uh… yes she did! Allison Janney nailed that role.
She doesn't look like her.
Unfortunately I had a abusive mother. Haven’t spoken to her in years and never wish to again. I severed the relationship when I found the guts to do it and my self respect. The film was a tough watch for me and brought up a lot of memories.
You should forgive her
@@moneytttt1140 why tf will anybody forgive something like that, not all mothers love their kids. She doesn’t need to apologize to her.
@@moneytttt1140why she should forgive her abusive mother?
Her energy is so incredibly narcissistic that it gives me anxiety. She would've been insanely difficult to live with.
Being abusive is not just about the physical, but mental emotional and verbal
Obviously, cap.
She treated her child like a commodity- a ticket out of poverty. I'm sure the mother had her own struggles but that's no excuse for abuse.
There was a lot more than “ a swat” that took place. Friends, coaches, and casual observers have all mentioned the abuse they witnessed taking place. “ She was nice, back then”....(I.E: Back when she was a small child and couldn’t defend herself)“ I didn’t have any problems with her until she was a teenager”. After a lifetime of abusing her child, she abandoned her at 15 years old, telling her that she didn’t want her, and then took off with her soon-to-be SEVENTH husband without looking back and she’s shocked this caused a bit of a “ problem”?! 🙄
You'll notice, none of whom did a damn thing to stop her. interesting.
The thing that really saddens me about the whole thing is that practically the whole skating world knew Tonya was being abused, and not one person did a thing about it. I know that times were different 25 years ago and domestic abuse was considered a private matter, but you'd think that SOMEONE, somewhere, would have had the guts to step in. But nope, not one single person. How do they live with themselves?
'I wanted her to have what I couldn't' - well that explains just about everything.
She traded all of her own life, time and effort and her daughter's life, time and effort into this one thing, no matter the cost.
She achieved this one thing. There's the cost.
Yep.
I imagine Tonya was difficult as a teenager... but that's how her mom made her. This woman is a vile piece of work
“She hates me!”
FOR GOOD REASON!!!
When you look at Tonya’s Mother in the real videos, and remember the image of her Mother in the movie, it’ll blow your MIND with how perfectly they visually portrayed her Mother in the movie!
“Is that me? She doesn’t even look like me!” 😂
KeithJMcG1987 lol...u wrong
KeithJMcG1987 That's a compliment for the actress.
Things abusive parents always say when things don't go their way as a defense mechanism is "my child/children hated me" so that it would be easier to forgive themselves which deep down they KNOW they can't.
"Is that me? She doesn't even look like me." And Margot Robbie doesn't look like Tonya. 😏
Gabrielle Maria In my opinion, they don't.
No amount of Hollywood makeup could make Margot Robbie look as trashy as Tanya Harding.
I bet as a mother she sees Tonya even better looking than Margot lol
I don't think they look alike. I believe Amy Adams could have been a better choice (purely based on looks and even her voice)
Andrea Sánchez Gómez Amy Adams could be her sister.
My mom harm me when I was a kid.
When I was 18 I left home to never come back now I'm 26 and I live so far from her. And even though she didn't love me, man I wished nothing in the world but to feel what's it like to be loved by her. We talk often but something when she says she loves me, something doesn't feel quite right or sincere. I feel so empty at night.
I just recently watched I, Tonya. I could and couldn’t believe the abuse this woman inflicted on her daughter. The part that got me in the movie though was when her mother showed up at Tonya’s house with all the reporters outside acting like she cared then actually had a voice recorder in her pocket. That would have been the last straw for me also. The mother should have been asked if she actually did that or not.
Sorry but you all might not get it.... the mom seems pretty abusive... just by her body language i can tell... look at the way she speaks: 'Is that me? That doesn't even look like me' ... like who says that after watching themselves being portrayed in a hollywood film?! She seems very perfecctionist and very angry....
I thought the same. Key red flag in a narcissist, and than blaming your daughter. “I wanted you to have what I couldn’t?’ Nothing was about her lol
Teddy TeTé I know for sure that she was abusive to both her and her sons.
Look at the way she said "she was sweet back then. I never had any problems until she was a teenagers". That's typical gaslighting language and behavior.
I don't know about abuse but What's exactly to nitpick about that part? People who think that the actor chosen to represent them doesn't actually look like them say that. Maybe she thinks the actress doesn't resemble her. Why is it wrong to want things to be perfect.
XaldinX Okay so anyone who doesn't like their portrayal in a movie or what actor was chosen to represent them is narcissistic? Maybe she doesn't like the appearance or looks of the actress representing her and thinks it doesn't resemble her appearance.
I would be scared of that mom 😂

well, what the hell did you expect after years and years of verbally and physically abuse your only child that needed your support + love the most, not to mention how she already lost her father figure as a young girl
this woman is really vicious
But many of Tonya's friends have confirmed the abuse. And lol @ "she doesn't look like me"..
I vaguely remember a quote from one of Tonya's friends, back around the time of the whole knee bashing saga, to the effect that when Tonya married Jeff Gillooley that it was as if she'd married a male version of her mother, abusive and hypercritical. Not to excuse Tonya, but as a human being, she definitely was dealt a rough hand in the family department.
Showing childhood photos the Mom said "She was sweet BACK THEN " a loving
Mom doesn't talk about her daughter that way.
Sounds like my mother. Haven't spoke to her in 3 or 4 years

Sounds like my grandma too. My grandma sometimes says, "Everyone should want my scoldings and be absolutely giddy when I do scold!"
Unfortunately for her, the only person still willing to talk to her is my salty ass.
I believe Tonya about the abuse stories. I don't think her mother should have been a parent-she strikes me like an eccentric, angry woman who didn't know how to love her daughter.
How to spot a self centered individual who feels that no matter what they do they should be forgiven....look for the “forgive and forget” or “you only have one mom” comments.
Have to agree with you there, Sashia.
"won't let go of the past" is another one
Anyone can be a parent. Trouble is, not many people deserve to be one.
LW: B'bye mommy!!
If you only have just one Mum, it does more serious that if that one is abusive because it's irreplacable. What Tonya's Mum did with Tonya is unforgivable and it also contributed to Tonya's problem. At point she must have realised that she has to block her out of her life and concentrate for her own.
Typical abuser. Always change the past to make them look innocent. Her Mum is still playing the victim and not admitting how much of an awful person she was.
that mom has some crazy fashion sense
Tonya definitely learned her coping mechanisms from her mother. Narcissism, ego issues, refusal to accept failure. Its all really sad how this cycles through generations.
I love how abusive parents and abusive people in general will absolutely deny they were ever abusive or be abusive like? Do you think a child just stops wanting ABSOLUTELY everything to do with a parent for no reason like tf?
I don't have any sympathy for this mother. What is she hoping to achieve through this interview? Guilt trip her daughter into a relationship?
If a child cuts out their parent from their life, there's no smoke without fire...
Exactly. I'm pretty sure Tonya didn't just wake up one day and decide to disown her mother. It would have been years of abuse, with Tonya trying to please her or make excuses or just enduring it, until she finally decided she had to walk away.
Wow her mother is a total abusive narcissist. I feel for Tonya and her upbringing but she is a strong person for still being able to accomplish some incredible things. I hope Tonya is able to have love in her life now, it really seems she never got it at all.
She is happy with her husband and son now, so she did get it afterall as it seems.
Oh woe is me, that's what abusers say, "I never could do anything right!"
Classic narcissist
What a psycho,! She doesn't deserve a relationship with Tonya. What the hell does she have on anyway?
She is personifying a potted plant. All nice shrubbery and no brains.
I relate so much her mom with my father, it's crazy.
"she hates me, periodt" something u don't hear from a woman of that age LOL
LMAO I’m glad I’m not the only one who got that.
"Is that me? Doesn't even look like me"
She really does though......
I will never forget this, I always felt something was off about her mom.
Children will never forget how their parents abused and mistreated them. The abuser will never admit their abuse because if they did, they have to be accountable. They're not willing to do that.
“I gave her one swat”
Ummm I doubt that it was only one....
You know what, you don’t know the whole story the mom could be lying.
Sabrina Adam I know first hand that she is
True but she did have tears in her eyes. That's very hard to fake on Q, on camera, being interviewed by strangers...
But who were her tears for? Her daughter, or herself? Maybe she is wrong, maybe she is right....but tears do not make a trustworthy witness.
Julie H Very true! I have noticed watching many true crime stories (of abusive, dangerous, narcissistic people), that the guilty person almost always gets emotional only when it comes to their own pain, not someone else's.
The bible says...

As a long-time figure skating fan, I can tell you Tonya is NOT the only US lady to land a 3Axel in competition. She was the first, but not the only.
Midori Ito was the very first to do it anywhere. Tonya Harding was the first US skater to do it. Mirai Nagasu was the first to do it at the Olympics.
Right not the only ..but still almost the only US woman to do so. So I wouldn't diminish the feat..its is extraordinarily difficult and actually three and half rotations requiring a shift of balance in the middle of the jump and most say more difficult than a quad.
She made her daughter a star, putting the role of a mother to the side to ensure her daughter reached her full potential. Classic stage-mum scenario.
Belinda Krooks She is a child abuser and a HORRIBLE mother! No one says anything about the kids she gave away to promote Tonya's career. Tonya wants nothing to do with her either because of how she was with her too.

She is not the only American woman to do a triple axel in competition. But she will always be the first. The bond between a mother and child is usually one that lasts until that parent dies. If no relationship exists at all, there has got to be a reason.
Not the triple/double combo, nor two triples in a single competition though, Harding is still the only American woman to do those - at least for now.
Harding is the first _American_ woman to successfully complete a triple axel in competition. Kimmie Meisner is the second American woman. Two Japanese women, Midori Ito and Mao Asada, have also done that.

the axe forgets, the tree remembers. such a true statement regarding abuse. and ill guarantee it especially applies to this relationship. im glad tonya has seemingly found peace among herself.
I totally understand when some parents use the tough love approach, but it’s a miracle that this insufferable excuse of a life didn’t poison Tonya’s passion for pursuing her dream sport. Tonya’s professional life has been bookended by being-used-and-thereby-uncontrollable events at her expense.
Funny when she says, is that me? She doesn't even look like me. Um yeah she does, spot on in fact.
"She hates me" LMAO 😁😁😁😁
I wasn't abusive I just gave her a swat 😂
Because most arenas and sports organizations now have strict "Code of Conduct" for parents and guardians, if Sandy Golden was abusive towards her daughter today, she would be banned from attending her practices and Figure Skating competitions for life.
Things that make you go hmmm.
In 2004 basketball player, Ron Artest jumped into the stands to physically fight a drunk fan and all he got was suspended. Tonya--fired FOREVER.
In 2002 Salt Lake's judges cheated in the pair figure skating judging in favor of Russia. NO ONE was fired or suspended for life! Tonya--fired FOREVER.
Recently in 2010 you HAD to do a quadruple jump. Evan Lysachek did not and "won" gold over Russian, Evgeni Plushenko, who DID the jump. So you think hey someone should give up their medal or chance at the next Olympics, right? Nope didn't happen! AND say it with me: Tonya--fired FOREVER.
If they did not fire Tonya, then the rest of the other athletes may feel intimidated by her. With the rumors spreading around that she is responsible for the attack and if the incident was not properly investigated and everyone went along doing their business, other skaters will be afraid of doing something that might upset Tonya out of fear of being assaulted. The rest of the athletes will go on thinking that violence at the end of the day is tolerated and trying to do the right thing wouldn't matter. This will make talented skaters afraid to pursue the sport. Among the things you mentioned above, nobody is directly affected. The motives were not meant to directly implicate hurt on someone. If the US Figure Skating Association tolerated Tonya Harding, it would create a ripple effect that would cause fear, distrust, it would promote violence and draw away people and sponsors. It has the potential to do the sport a pretty big damage
Yeah but those people attacked fans or cheated. They didn't attack a fellow competitor...
Yes, because she deserved it. The attack was violent, and Tonya was implicated. It was a strong deterrent and it worked.
I like how you're only stating how "Tonya--fire FOREVER" when there's more to that. How bout you say, "Tonya who was the mastermind of a distasteful scheme in order to win the gold medal was to hire 2 men to bash the knee of innocent hardworker Nancy Kerrington. Then Nancy's dream to win the gold medal never happens. These other lame events don't even compare to the assault of Nancy. Tonya deserved it.
Freddy Krueger Well said.
I, Tonya was amazing. Allison Janney and Margot Robbie will get Oscar nods for sure. You can't change the past but I hope Tonya has made positive progressions into the future and is happy with her life. No one deserves to live and die by their mistakes.
It's still one person's side of things that happened. The truth is usually always in the middle.
Im in the UK and remember the incident with Nancy. I was around 9 at the time and thought Nancy was so pretty and Tonya was so evil. I forgot about it until I saw the film, did a little research after and my goodness, nowI feel for Tonya. She was abused by her mum (yes you worked v hard, but that doesn't stop you praising your daughter. If you felt that bad about her supposed lack of thanks you could have stopped funding her years before. You wanted the glory and money she would bring you), and partner and snubbed by the sports snobs, but she was good! She may have a hard manipulative side but I think many abuse victims do, as a defence mechanism. Now, as a grown up and a mum myself, I just want to give her a cuddle and tell her she's worth it.
I'd love to see the whole interview
