Fire harden the wood then shape into finished knife.
Yeah, you got to try a few techniques to prep the wood
Agreed! Fire treat it and then sharpen. Fire treat and sharpen. Keep repeating till it’s hardened. Or try dunking the piece of wood in a container of wood hardener for a week and the pull it out and let dry. Then sharpen it!
I wonder if against the grain vs with the grain might make a difference as well.
Also the blade part was waaayyy to thick
Or use wax
4:30am is the perfect time to use power tools.

Hey, at least now you’re not late for work!
I do it all the time i find that my creative juices start flowing really late at night

I have a felling that Tylers neighbors made him angry so he decided that using power tools in 4:30am is the best revenge
Was thinking about that also

Wow!! Another comment about Tyler’s neighbors. Nice job!! 🙄
I don't think so...he's strange in a different way 🤣

My exact thinking as well. Please wear protection!

Yeah I knew oak wouldn't do it, but there are absolutely types of wood out there that are denser and harder than even many metals which are used in blade making. Lignum Vitae being your best type of wood most likely since it's the hardest wood known to man. It's so dense it doesn't float in water.
Damn I didn’t know that, that’s crazy as hell
Lignum is about 3 times harder than oak, there are a few other species even harder than that (some kind of australian ironwood is the hardest if memory serves) but lignum is by far the easiest to get hold of. On a side note, if you ever cut down an apple tree in your garden, do yourself a favour and smash the stump out while it's still green. I made the mistake of leaving a big stump for about 10 years and when it came to remove it it was so hard that you could only get a half inch into it before the chainsaw teeth were completely dull and a sharp 8lb axe would just bounce off. Had to burn it out in the end
@@DjDolHaus86 my apple tree stump rotted underground and caused a small sinkhole which is the story of how I broke my leg lol....
Or a slow grown pine or spruce. I've seen some 60+ old pines in my life that look like they are just 2 years old due to the low nutrient ground they'v grown in. Dense af with the year rings tighter together than a virgin.

As a beginner woodworker, who specialises in cutlery, guitar picks and tobacco pipes. I think you should have oriented the grain from spine to edge rather than handle to blade I think that wood have made the cutting edge stronger. Thus potentially sharper. But some oil finish like: linseed or sunflower oil wood go a long way to increase strength. Hone the bevel (with a shallow angle), oil it. Then, stone it. But this is just my initial thought. I will try it for myself and edit this comment to tell you my findings. Cool video Tyler. I never hesitate when I see a new video from you.
i love how you said "that wood of made the 'wood' stronger"
I'm subbing to you, you better come through with that video
You ever make a water pipe out of wood?
Id also suggest a tighter grained wood
I’ll try out making a wood knife eventually
yeah, i'd love to see you revisit this with a more hardwood, it's possible to make sharp wood knife, just have to find the correct wood :D
Ebony!
@@Raul-ef2ie Or Lignum Vitae.. Could probably do with a narrower blade too, since that's a chonky wedge Tyler made!
So what's the "correct wood" you never mentioned?
He should try Iron Wood. The channel MarlinBaits has used it before making a fishing lure.
@@Raul-ef2ie Ebony or bamboo both have a tight grain able to be sharpened and strong enough to hold the edge
Tyler really has some of the most inventive content on CZcams. His uploads are so consistently good.
Can't say this one is really inventive lol the one weird on CZcams that makes everything into a knife has done this one already. Tyler's content is always 100% worth watching
I think he got the idea from that recent vid where a guy tried making a wooden axe from a tree to chop its own stump. Spoiler... it didn’t work
"good" is the wrong word I think, sure as hell entertaining but something about the way he imposes bad safty practices on his viewers makes it not necessarily good
Omg. You should expand your CZcams repertoire.
He's not so much inventive as much as he puts his followers ideas into action, which is just as good content lmao

honestly the most interesting channel I’ve ever come upon. And this channel is very comedic as well. Perfect combination love ya tyler
The whole blade needs to be thinner then it would cut through, as long if it has enough strength.
Unles your spending good money on good wood it it's not happening
I like watching tyler, it's like watching a caveman bang at things until they work.
EVERYONE LIKE THIS
Soak the wood in a resin bath and put it in a vacuum chamber.
The wood will soak up the resin making it a LOT more rigid, then start the sharpening process.
TylerTube: How Sharp Can You Make a Piece of Wood?
Me: I didn't know I needed to know the answer to that question.
Tyler has the best videos I want to meet him one day he seems like a good person,Tyler if you see this you should have a fan meet
Easy there Stan
Does anyone else think Tyler's voice is one of the most relaxing and calming? Lol please tell me I'm not
You're not alone😳
You should have used Hickory or White oak as they are the hardest/strongest wood you can buy so that the blade won't dull as easily
you should cast that in resin then re sharpen it
Awesome vid man! Suggestion - use a denser wood like hard maple where the grain at the edge would still be strong enough to hold an edge
That flex tape on the table still HOLDS ON TIGHT
I really needed this I had a awful experience today and this helped so much love your channel man thanks
Tyler answers all the questions no one is asking. I love it.
you need to make the blade go further back almost to the back of the wood so that the “blade” is thinner and has possibilities of cutting
Saber grind
Me 8pm: I'm going to go to bed early tonight
Me at 12am: I gotta see how sharp this wood gets
One way that a really solid edge could be put onto a "wood" knife is if you saturated it with a very, very hard resin of some kind. Something that'll bind to the wood all the way through and give it some extra structure so the edge can be brought down just a little finer, and hold just a little longer.
Epoxy,its called stabilizing
Defeats the purpose of the video.
ive really been enjoying tyler a lot recently
Little tip for hardening wood is fire. Hold it over fire until the surface is getting lightly charcoaled (over 180°C). That lets the succrose, wich is inherent in wood, melt and crystalize (like caramell)
It imrpoves the stiffness and density of the wood fibers since it acts like super glue between the fibers.
i have to wonder if the direction of the grain of the wood makes a difference in how sharp you can get it as well.
I love you Tyler, thanks for these vidoes, i love watching them so much, so much fun

4:30 AM ... well, time to get out the power tools!
Ah reminds me of woodshop shenanigans. I’m pretty sure every kid in their had their own wood sword they’d pull out when the teacher wasn’t paying attention
Lots of spot on comments here in the thread.
1. Thickness. The woods sharpness would have been better had it been at the optimal thickness to structure rigidity. A butter knife was more dull but would have cut through on the swing. Why? Thickness. A butter knife is metal so it can be insanely thin and still have structure.
2. The grain. I learned a long time ago wood grain direction matters A LOT. As someone else said, flip that thing around and you stand a better chance.
3. My favorite. Fire hardening. You wouldn't believe the strength increase. You're going to lose structure flex as the moisture and space in the wood allow it to flex more. You should watch a non fired wooden arrow vs a fired one in slow mo. Same with spears.
I'd say you could match the edge of a trash Walmart knife if you got some extremely hard wood, thin the blade, and fire it. I and everyone else is certain of it
You need to make the knife with the grain going the opposite direction. The oak will definitely chip away with the direction it's going. The blade will definitely be stronger the other direction.
This frustrated me so much lol I was screaming that too.
You need to flame harden the wood, and sharpen it so the blade edge is perpendicular to the grain.
Crazy funny tests. Brilliant.
Love the train in the background!!!
Love the vids they are awsome!!
Youre supposed to have a shop vac hooked up to the hole on the belt sander. It'll help with the dust and prevent clogging and fires. Dust aint good for ya
“It like hitting a water bottle with a piece of wood” no joke
Saw dust? you mean man glitter? *flips beard*
what you need is called stabilised wood. Its wood thats been vacuum filled with resin and it can be sharpened.
1:38 HEY!!!! I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO GET MY EARPLUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good vid.
Definitely could use a more dense wood and then heat treat the blade part for extra toughness.
Dude I'm actually watching this at 4 in the morning that's so hilarious
Did you wake up for this or is this late night foolery?
At 4:30am and all those machines are running🤣🤣 your neighbors really must love you!!!
You should try it with the original cave-man days knife material, stone. Get the right kind of stone anyway and you could probably get it pretty sharp.
Video idea: how sharp can you make a shovel
An industrial label peeler. Nice.
I predict that when the wood is shaped sufficiently enough to be considered a blade, the edge will be so thin and the wood won't be strong enough to support it and it will immediately become flat and dull.
I agree with Tyler, even if you use snake wood, I don’t think it would hold an edge enough to cut effective.
It’s 3am and I have a busy 12 hours shift ahead of me that starts at 6am, I’m gonna watch this instead of sleeping
Tyler you always surprise me with these damn videos
4:30am crackhead vibes, I love it.
I once made a short sword/dagger out of wood. It was quite sharp but it had to be re-sharpened all the time
For future knife videos, I saw something interesting. They put a tomato on a table and sliced the top of it horizontally without holding the tomato with the other hand.
lmao You got me so good! My jaw literally dropped when I saw the bottle explode.
Viewing this at 22:38 in the uk 🇬🇧 👍 thanks for all the great videos I’ve been watching for 2 years
I dont know if hes married but just imagine him getting up at 4:30am, looking to his wife and says "I HAVE AN IDEA. THIS CANT WAIT." 😂
Why does everyone assume I'm married 😔
Starting to think he's a serial killer and making weapons he can destroy. Watch him make ice bullets next 🤔😳🤣
the problem with wood vs metal is, the molecules of wood are much bigger than metal. so technically you can only get it as sharp as the molecules are in size. the bigger the molecule, the more surface area there is to absorb energy, which is why wood is hard to keep sharp, where as metal is easy to keep sharp, since the molecules receive less energy.
you tried making the knife along the grain of the wood instead of against it, no wonder your edge kept breaking
Think this is one worth re-visiting later down the track
Saw the ig post and got me excited
Your neighbors are either really patient, or really sure you murdered someone Dexter style 😂
I'm so happy you actually used the wood hatchet on the water bottle. Next wood knife Pine! Maybe I will do it and prove you mistaken!
You need to use a harder wood, thin the wood out to be like 1/4 as thick, use a higher grit whetstone and wet the whetstone, and then add mineral oil to harden it further.
reminds me of the time my dad had once carved a piece of wood into the shape of a knife. blade, grip, handguard an all.
it was pretty sharp, for a piece of wood.
Unfortunately it broke because some kid played with it and wanted to make it "even sharper" by just carving away at it until the blade was so small that it just broke off.
I started watching this dude before COVID 😊
can try heat tempering the wood to make it harder before trying to sharpen it. most people I know do this with a blow torch going back and forth on the wood till it's slightly blackened and feels smooth (after it's cooled of course) the wood shrinks slightly when you do this and the fibers inside it bond more tightly together. also a good alternative to resin coating or wood stain to keep it from rotting
Wooden dagger is the way to go
Its always a good day when you post!

minecraft axe : allow me to introduce myself
okay i think having the grains going the other way like lil sharpened serrated teeth might help but you'll loose your edge faster and make the handle more brittle
Tyler showing us is wood cutting skills
i feel bad for his neighbors its 4:30am and he has saws, sanders, and hammers just going off
Lmao that ending though.
Never a dull moment with you is there
There is a video you should see. It is called "sharpest wood kitchen knife in the world". The guy uses a wood called lignum vitae. Supposedly the heaviest wood. It won't float.
i wonder if the wood would make a better knife if the grain was running horizontally instead, great video and at least it somewhat cut the bottle at the end lol
kiwami japan makes knifes out of anything including wood so you just need the right kind of wood and you could make a usable knife
Wow. This guy answers all the questions I didn't know I had😮
Try it again sharpening AGAINST the grain, not with the grain. Also, fire harden the cutting edge. I do this with primative wood spears I carve. It will never be as sharp as metal but you can still get it it pretty sharp.
I was about to say they exact same thing
@@jadd6810 Thanks for letting us know.
I can hear my woodwork teacher shouting at me for all the times i held wood on one place on the sander 😂
Next video: "I made 5 knives out of different materials".
Exactly, fire hardening would have been the best choice if you stuck with oak.
Someone probably said it but you could be able to do it with a wood sealer it would hold it together better i would have thought
I would love to see you revisit this, try it with ipe wood aka ironwood
Very heavy duty hardwood
You want sharp wood? Just use the edge of a melomine board, shredded my leather gloves😓
Maybe if you tried remaking the knife with a harder wood and putting a coat of primer or something so that it holds the edge.
