  • I and a friend play a full 1h match of Utopia (30 rounds composed of 120 seconds each) for the Intellivision. The match started out with the worst possible odds for me, hurricanes kept destroying my buildings causing me to lose a lot of points and fall behind on score by hundreds. Fortunately, though, the tables turned for me late match when my economy was restored, and I was able to regrow my population. This time around I avoided building factories to prevent pollution after mine had originally been destroyed by yet again another hurricane, thus, losing fewer points and population in the long run. With schools highering my Celsus and its well-being, I was able to get back on track. Late game I dedicated my gold exclusively to rebel soldiers. With my friend's island falling to anarchy and hurricanes causing him massive damage, that was the final nail in his coffin. And in the last few rounds, I barely managed to snag the victory! What a comeback that was! ;)
    Game also came out for:
    Mattel Aquarius
    Network play achieved through Parsec.
Parsec lets you invite your friends to play games with you online even if the game doesn't have online multiplayer. You can play together, watch them play, or take over the controller to show them how it's done.

As a young lad, I really enjoyed this game. Unfortunately none of my friends had the patience to try and learn the basics so we almost always ended up playing Snafu.
    Damn I miss my Intellivision.

Your comment means a lot to me. Shame on your friends for not be willing to sit down and learn to play such a masterpiece over Snafu. My Intellivision's controllers stopped working last week so game over now. Too bad! But all that matters is the joyful memories that such games brought (and still bring) to us all, whether it could be a match of Snafu, Utopia or a shot at the Cloudy Mountain. I'll be getting a new Intelli soon, they're fairly cheap nowadays.
      Thanks for watching ;-)

@@retrogamesinformer285 Nice! I've been on the hunt for another one locally but no luck so far. But I am watching a few on eBay if need be. Just out of curiosity, are you playing on a physical console for this netplay video? Or using emulation? Not sure if there was ever an accessory that gave the system internet capabilities or not.
I really need to look into this Parsec thing. Then I can play these games with people who actually have the patience to learn them.

@@cheeseburgerwalrus499 Finding deals locally is totally luck based. If you live in America your best bet is to search all over Craigslist or ask your neighbours if they have one (unlikely)
As to how we managed to record this, I'm glad you asked! The recording of the game's footage was achieved through emulation using the latest Nostalgia build (version 5). I actually wanted to play on jzIntv which is the most accurate Inty emulator known to date, however for the life of me I could not figure out how to set it up since it is strictly console based and the console commands did not work for me at all (perhaps I need to install a specific programming language, I have no idea)
There's a couple of reasons as to why I decided to record this on emulator. First of all to record from the machine (supposedly unmodified) I would need a VCR to record from the modulated RF output. The sole high end VCR I own only works when all planets are aligned and the cheap VCRs I own that do work bring noticeable noise and interference that affect the recording as a whole. Secondly, as you probably already imagined there's no possible way net play could have been possible in 1982 (the only accessory that comes any closer to my mind is the Play Cable, they would send you games from a vast selection through a coaxial cable for $12 a month in the States)
Fun fact: my friend knew nothing regarding the Intellivision. I taught him the mechanics and we practiced for three days before attempting to record a proper match, the end result was surprisingly flawless!
You should definitely check out Parsec. It is free and extremely easy to setup thanks to its implementation of a user friendly minimalistic interface (of course, the games are streamed to others, so both you and your friend/s require a solid internet connection to make this happen. The keyboard controls are also shared so one of them has to play with the number keys on the top, unfortunately)
If you want to buy an Inty nowadays I suggest you either go for the model 1 (2 & 3 are trash, do not bother unless you're a collector) or you could just pick up an Intellivision Flashback plug 'n play and mod it with a raspberry running jzIntv. There's a whole thread dedicated to the "Ultimate Intellivision Flashback" on Atari Age, definitely check that one out! It may just be the most cost effective way to play the Intellivision nowadays.
Happy gaming! Hope you get to re-experience your childhood memories again :))
Also sincere apologies for this unnecessarily long "scroll"

@@retrogamesinformer285 Hey thanks for the info my friend! You just got me to download Nostalgia and I've been playing Cloudy Mountain for the past hour or so haha. The only bad thing is having to use the keyboard, but I'm getting used to it. Maybe one day I'll pick up a Flashback system if I can't find the original for a good deal. While I wasn't a huge fan of the Intellivision's controllers, it's just so much easier to get the hang of controls with inlays in front of you and whatnot.
Maybe one day I'll look into netplay so I can play Utopia and other games that lack AI. Thanks again!

I'm remembering this game today, because I was watching a meteorologist talking about Hurricane Lee, and how the hurricane had slowed down to only 10mph at one point. I remembered a hurricane in this game slowing down over a hospital, my expensive hospital that I paid so much money for, and I'm shouting 'NOOOOOO!' as I hear the noise when it gets destroyed. I don't remember the noise. Was it like a 'bong' noise? I'm already amused just to hear the sounds of the fishing boats catching fish - I had forgotten. I'm 48 years old. This was one of my favorite games. I also loved Advanced D&D, Snafu, some of the space attack ones - Space Armada? and another, and Night Stalker - we had a bunch of games, but not all of them.

We would skip school and go surfing, then play this if the surf got flat. We usually were stoned playing this. We called the two islands Italy and Korea. Our strategy was to get as much of the land planted while also doing the buildings to prevent rebellions.
It’s hard to believe this was state of the art in 1982. But it was.

Build at the end of your turn. Build expensive stuff closest to the east or west coast (depending upon which island...I mean the far left or right of the left or right island). Plant crops near the channel (the rain keeps them healthy from turn to turn). Use the fort to protect the expensive stuff. That is all there is to it!

This was a brilliant game with so many things to factor in within a limited time period. My brother always beat me at chess and so was better than me in this game as well. Focus too much on planting crops or building a factory and you don't notice that a pirate ship has sunk one of your fishing boats. And I always felt that the western island was hit by cyclones more often than the eastern island.

I used to love to watch those hurricanes cause so much destruction, they should have had a FEMA option to relocate people like the Bush family did. I ran probabilities and the rain clouds would always fall on the right islands upper left and the left islands long strip at the bottom, always grow your crops there, for more information on how you can be a better utopia player contact me!
