    The single most important part of growing your own food at home is your soil health. Irrespective of whether you grow your vegetables, fruit trees or plants in containers or in the ground the same principles of soil health apply. However, your plants can't always get all the nutrients they need from the soil and that is where foliar feeing comes into play.
    Foliar feeding is a very effective way of giving your plants the additional nutrients they need to maximise their growth and crop. A healthy plant is more resistant to pests & disease, saving you time and money down the line. The most important benefit of foliar feeding is the ability to give your plants the micro nutrients and trace elements that they cannot get from the soil, or are only able to get under very specific soil conditions. Giving your plants these micro nutrients and trace elements helps to boost you overall plant health.
    The first part in benefiting from foliar feeding is understanding how plants grow and the role that leaves play. Once you understand that you can target specific nutrients to the plant to ensure you never struggle with nutrient deficiency in your vegetable garden. There are certain things that you need to bear in mind when foliar feeding your vegetables. A very important thing to consider is timing. If you get your timing wrong then you can easily burn the leaves of your plants, which is counter-intuitive to why you want to foliar feed in the first place.
    This video is a detailed guide to foliar feeding your vegetable garden and fruit tree orchard but also applies to general garden plants and indoor plants.

    Have you been using foliar feeding in your vegetable garden, fruit tree orchard or garden plants? Have you found that it makes your plants that little bit stronger and healthier? 🌻

    I love the little pump sprayer. I’ve never seen one that holds less than two or three gallons which is rather cumbersome for my small garden and a few fruit trees. Hope I can find one in the US. Good video, thanks.

      Yeah, that little sprayer it amazing! They are very popular here in South Africa. It hold 1L, which I see is about a quarter gallon. It's nice for smaller gardens but too small for bigger ones, but really handy to have. Personally I find the 5L one to be the perfect size for most needs. I hope you manage to find some that can work for your space 🌻🌻🌻

    Nothing wrong with an application of "chemical" fertilizer if your plant needs it. Plants don't really care for large organic molecules anyway, the bacteria break that stuff down into the chemicals the plants needs. Technically, water is also a chemical.
    The problem with synthetic fertilizers is when they're used as the only solution. You need organic matter in the soil to provide a good home for the good microbes and give structure to the soil but if your plants are chlorotic, the best thing you can do for them is to give them a fast acting fertilizer and these are usually synthetic. I only mention this cause most of those plants in the intro look hungry. It's winter and they're in containers so I could see why that would happen. But that just goes to show how modern problems require modern solutions and just saying "man-made chemical always bad" is shooting yourself in the foot I feel at least.

      Thanks for a really well written and thought out response. I really appreciate context and how you put it makes sense. This point really is about preference and experience.
      I do not disagree with you at all. You make very valid points. Personally I won't use synthetic fertiliser as a foliar spray purely because of how easy it is to burn the leaves. I used to use synthetic fertiliser on some of my bonsai and burnt leaves once too often 😆
      Like I mentioned, this is all about personal preference and as you rightly pointed out that as long as it is not your only way of feeding then you shouldn't run into any issues 🌻

    Has anyone tried foliar feeding using bokashi tea?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před 5 měsíci +1

      That's a really good point! Yes, you can 100% use Bokashi tea for foliar feeding your plants. The only reason why I use specific fertiliser is to control exactly what the plants gets. With worm tea or Bokashi tea the ingredients are always different which impact the nutrient makeup and because leaves can only absorb a certain amount of nutrients you want to make sure it's the ones they struggle to get.
      Personally I would add the Bokashi tea into the soil for the roots and then foliar feed with something more predictable like seaweed 🌻

    Hi my name is Carol
    I grow herbs and veggies in wooden grow boxes
    I need your help please
    My daughter bought
    HORTISOL FOLIAR FEED
    But I keep on mixing it wrong
    I have a 5ltr bottle
    Question how much of the foliar liquid do I add to a 5ltt bottle
    Thanks

      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey Carol, great news on getting some Hortisol! It's a really great product!
      So would suggest 2 of the orange bottle caps to 5l of water. That won't burn your leaves and also remember to apply the foliar spray very early in the morning or late in the afternoon 🌻

    Thank you for that valuable information. I’ve sprayed foliage for pests and diseases, but I’ve not thought about spraying after a very hot day and for fertilising. 🪴🌱🌺🙂☀

      I'm so glad you have a new tactic to use in your garden to increase the health of your plants and that timing is a bit more clear now 🌻🌻🌻
