Haaland fans, just so you know, you dont have to “defend” Haaland ball skills… the only reason you might think you have to is because you grew up watching Messi and Cristiano and you think the best player in the world should be able to do it all… it doesnt work that way.
Those monsters are in a whole different level. Thats why they are the goats.
The truth is that most top forwards (even balon d’or winners) were similar to Haaland, as in they were really good at something and not that great at others. People like Shevchenko, Inzagui, Raúl, Owen, Cantona, etc… neither of them were even close to be as complete a player as Messi and Cristiano.
Only player I can think of is Ronaldo Nazario. Thats it.
Haaland is a “specialized” striker and thats absolutely fine, specially at the insane level he does what he does.
No need to sell Haaland as something he isnt. Just appreciate what he is and enjoy him… the sad truth is that eventually he will be gone and all we can do is watching him while we can

It’s not that Haaland can’t be good with the ball. It’s the lack of impact in big games when the team needs you to step up that world class players do, which Haaland so far hasn’t done since his debut season. To be the “best player” players need to step up against hard opponents which is what Messi, Ronaldo and even Mbappe did

Erling Haaland is an elite striker, when it comes to scoring goals, he’s so good and consistent at doing that nobody is arguing against it but I feel like in the Manchester City system particularly in big games, his weaknesses are being constantly exposed which has attracted a lot of criticism from fans and pundits. You think of a traditional striker, their job is to score goals consistently and he does that best, someone who’s average doesn’t score 50+ goals in his debut season in England, but the thing is that beyond the goals someone like Haaland can only impact the game if he’s getting service. There’s not an issue with that because it’s his role in a team and he has to occupy the spaces that he’s asked to occupy from his manager and since football is a team sport, you have to rely on your teammates to be successful.
What I have an issue is when people push an agenda that an out and out striker like Haaland can be the best player in the world solely off of just his goals. The term “best player” refers to someone who is the complete package and yes goalscoring is part of it, your ability to produce a moment of individual brilliance out of nothing and being able to contribute to the team in multiple different ways that’s what separates a great striker from a great player. He is only elite at scoring goals and there are so many players who are much better than Erling Haaland because they can consistently score and create: Lionel Messi Cristiano Ronaldo Neymar Kylian Mbappe Harry Kane Ronaldinho Luis Suarez R9 Karim Benzema Kevin de Bruyne Vinicius Junior Mohamed Salah Thierry Henry etc. . Overall, he has a lot of limitations in his game and I just feel like he can never truly be the best player in the world, he can only be seen as the best striker in the world because best player vs best striker there’s a difference in that. It’d be unfair to say that relying heavily on his teammates means that he can only score goals when he plays for Manchester City. While playing alongside creative players helps him, if you look at his goals per game ratio at Borussia Dortmund RB Salzburg and Norway, it’s proof that he’s a scoring machine. Pep’s system at Manchester City doesn’t allow Haaland to get involved in the game very much compared to when he was at Dortmund. They have a lot of creative attackers, they see Haaland as a pure striker meaning that without the ball, he won’t do much to track back or drop deep and in possession sometimes they don’t create for him and this leaves him isolated in attack. That’s something that Pep has to sort out because he scores so many goals and it’s what he does best, but you can find many ways to bring out the best in him because he’s not contributing to the team when he’s not scoring.

    • @Jefstito
      @Jefstito Před měsícem

Thats the “Messi-Cristiano” bias talking. Before Messi and Cristiano the “complete package”, didnt exist.
There were several balon d’or winners that had limitations in their game like Owen, Cannavaro, Baggio, Weah, Nedved, Shevchenko…
If you grew up watching Messi and Ronaldo you have a distorted vision of who the best player should be.
It has always been the best player or most determinant player that plays on the team that won it all.
The thing with Messi and Cristiano is that they were so absurdly above everyone else, that it seemed stupid to give the prize to someone else (Ribery, Sneijder, Iniesta, Lewandowski) even if they won more, but thats not the metric that historically has applied to football and I dont think we should be placing it on Haaland or any other player because Messi and Ronaldo should not be the standard but the ideal.
Im not saying your criticism is wrong or anything, btw, and Im not “shaming you” for helding that standard; but I think you’ll realize this on your own as time passes and you realize just how privileged we were to see these two guys. Most likely, we will never something like that while we live

His numbers are excellent, I think Erling Haaland’s performances in big games has led to uncomfortable conversations surrounding him. Even though last season, he scored 50+ goals and won a lot, the reason why he didn’t win the Ballon Dor not just because of Messi’s World Cup win and performances, he doesn’t have a Ballon Dor to his name because of his inability to deliver in big games for his team when it matters the most.
Since joining Manchester City: 0 goals and 0 assists against Liverpool at Anfield twice and in the Community Shield, against Arsenal home and away in the Premier League, Community Shield as well, Manchester United in the FA Cup final, Real Madrid in both legs of the champions league semifinals, Inter Milan in the Champions League final and Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup final. As good as his numbers, football isn’t just about stats because what bothers me is not just his lack of goals and assists in those games, the guy literally does nothing he doesn’t touch the ball. I know he’s a striker, but isn’t it concerning that a “Ballon Dor” contender doesn’t touch the ball in high profile games, he literally has less than 20 touches and gets taken out of the game way too easily. Their system doesn’t play to his strengths because you’re not expecting Haaland to dribble past 4 players and score, that’s what guys like Messi Ronaldo Neymar Mbappe Henry Ronaldinho etc those players do that. You have to give this guy service and if someone like Kevin De Bruyne for example is having an off day, who’s feeding him the ball. I think his presence opens up a lot of opportunities for the other Manchester City players, but his general linkup play is poor and while Roy Keane has every right to criticize him, calling him a “League Two player” I disagree with that. Everyone is forgetting that he’s still 23 years old and what he did last season was incredible and even without being in top form all season, he still leads the premier league in goals, with his age he has plenty of time to improve on those weaknesses.

In the end he’s very efficient and a great asset to probably every team but no matter how many goals he’ll score there’s nothing to compare with the greats of the game and even though I like him if he’ll ever win the ballon d’or this way I’ll see it as a proof of how pathetic and statistic the judgement became.
He shouldn’t be in the conversation even with 200 goals a season imo.

I’m a huge Halaand fan. No better pure striker at the moment in my opinion. But a highlight of 9 mins can be done for any player, including league 2 players. I think he does need to improve on other aspects of his game. Like having better impact on build up and on creativity. Once he gets better at those he will be unstoppable because the best defenders will also have a hard time figuring out his next moves. He is not having the impact he should have in most of the big games and i think it’s because he needs to improve on these other aspects of his game.
