  • Ethanol is converted to acetaldehyde than acetate. This produces a lot of NADH which causes many effects for the liver:
    - lactic acidosis
    - fasting hypoglycemia
    - ketoacidosis
    - hepatosteatosis
Fomepizole can block alcohol dehydrogenase at the start of metabolism so ethanol doesn't get turned into acetaldehyde.
Fomepizole is given to alcohol poisoning. Also works with methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning.
Disulfiram can block acetaldehyde dehydrogenase in the middle of the reaction which causes "extra-bad" hangovers that discourages drinking.
