you are paying quality and workmanship it's not just an ordinary flashlight it's a work of art and a custom one of a kind, it's not for everyone it's for people who appreciate something that no one else has not the run of the mill.
I did a spit-take on the price. I can't fathom spending that much on a photon emitter if said photon emitter can't be used to dismember my enemies and bring balance to the force.
+hehoff33 This is an incredible sentence. Thank you for it.
people get influenced and see other people spending absolutely stupid amounts on a tampon sized flashlight. then it becomes more of a reality for them. then they get envious[for whatever reason]. if you didnt belong to any forums or subscribed to any gear related channels and stumbled across a single cell $400 flashlight on a webpage advertisement any sane non-inbred civilized person would laugh.
Cool looking light! Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant (light) from a more civilized age...
I am actually looking for a new EDC Flashlight but I guess I keep looking. Great Review as always.
I agree with you Nick on this. I do like custom flashlights but don’t quite get the pricing. emperor's new clothes comes to mind.
Love your Haikus on the Haiku. Very Zen! So your conclusion:
Photons too pricey
For my everyday carry
But oh, that nice light!
These are sweet I love mine! Definitely not for everyone’s pocket though
Archie Baldwin I didn’t lose a dime on mine, actually made a couple bucks
Archie Baldwin I agree, some of the stuff people pay big money for is crazy.
D25A is my personal favorite daily carry too. It pairs nicely with the Kahr Arms/Spyderco Delica for light weight package.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the Elzetta Alpha, Nick. Made in the USA and with fully-potted electronics. Thanks for your work!
I really appreciate your balanced reviews of these custom edc gadgets! I feel like other reviewers on utube are just saying how great this light is without pointing out flaws like pocket profile, weight, and cost!
Great video. At about 6:13 into this video you briefly showed a light with a rotary control. Would it be possible for you to share a model name or number with a possible link to where to find this elusive gem? Thanks so much.
Hey Nick, I recently bought a CRKT Snicker, and after watching a few reviews before my purchase everything looked okay for a backup 20$ knife and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to disassemble it. Every video I watched spoke about it's amazing action and mine has a ridiculously strong detent. Do you think it's just because it's new?
"For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of money, that is a LOT of money!" LOL!! Great line.
Nick, please review the Muyshondt Aeon MK. III!
Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no substitute for a good flashlight at your side. The price is high but I find myself using the Haiku more than most other lights. It's not the most powerful or the most versatile but it does have the best light quality you can find. If you ever have any issues, Don McLeash (the maker) will absolutely take care of you.
Nick, Don offers an option to have a different driver included other than the 1S or 3S option. It is a driver put together by CPF member Rush and has an option for programmability, including higher mode output. See here: www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?409289-New-driver-from-RUSH-for-the-1x123-quot-E-Series-quot-lights
Hey Nick,
I got the CRKT 2392 Deviation auto-suggested to me on Amazon which has this really distinctive look (not as much as the wrinkle 2). For some reason it's selling at half price vs. MSRP. At that price point, (35USD) for an unassisted flipper with IKBT I'm wondering if it's worth it.
Anyway, thought I'd give you a heads up since it might go well with your budget knife series.
I prefer the Mule but any McGizmo is a treat.
can you do a review of the deejo knife or christy knife?
Nick could you review the Arespark 3 light LED headlamp? I bought one for $20 on Amazon and i find i use it almost daily. It will throw visible light at least 150 yards. Now i can work easily late at night and can almost see better than i can during the day. I have never been this pleased with a cheap Chinese product. I think it would make a great affordable gear review.
The eagtac can take 14500 cell which makes it much brighter closer to five 550 lm
ok thanks leaning that way as its going to be the most I'm spending on a knife plus it's Canadian so it Wii be a grand
While I don't disagree on the curve of diminishing returns here...do you think it's really much different than say, a WE knife framelock vs. a CRK framelock? (Or vs. custom knife, for that matter...also, WE might not be the best example as they're fairly premium as well, but I haven't really owned any "budget" framelocks for reference.)
Or would you argue that knives hold their value better since technology evolves more slowly as compared to flashlights, so it's more palatable to spend $400-$500 on a knife?
Probably my biggest reservation on buying an "heirloom" quality flashlight is that the light itself might last forever, but inevitably, the Fenixes and EagleTacs of the world will release something with better specs every 6 months.
The Haiku about the Haiku was a nice touch, and your laid back humor along side the information is what keeps me coming back to your videos. Beautiful light, but that price tag is downright untouchable. Any recommendations for a Sub-$50 light that meets your size and quality expectations for that range?
Olight S1 Baton is pretty solid.
Nick Shabazz Nick please what's that "rotating" light at 06:33?
+knifebitten Jetbeam RRT01
Nick Shabazz Thanks Nick, it looks very nice 😃
I really do get the idea of custom lights. I have three Prometheus lights, and they are fun, kinda cool in my pocket. But honestly, so many (and I hate to say it), Chinese lights are very good, way bright, and much less bucks. But a man gotta do what a man....etc.
I do not have this light, but it is nice looking. I see a lot of people complaining about low lumens. I have not looked up the specs, but in my experience there is no free lunch. If you crank out super high lumens you will have lower runtime. It all depends on what you are looking for. That runs off 1cr123. I am sure the maker could make it higher lumens if he wanted to. I like the light, but I use my lights at work and beat them up too bad.
How or where can someone buy one?
Custom light, custom price.
Got the non-Ti EagTac D25A Clicky myself, and GF has the Fenix UC35. Got the EagTac cause I had flashlight envy. Still have a little lumen-envy. :-p
nick questions I'm buying a chris reeves and what do you find to be nicer the large or the small as I really regard your advice sorry has nothing to do with video
+Mike M Check my videos on the large
what!? no delica 4 comparison, nick im dissapointed
You meant Grismo Norseman😂
ill stick to my eagtac d25 a ti, i just love it
My holy grail of a flash light is the Secur SP-1002
I'd rather get something like one of the BLH lights which are much brighter, more modes and "custom" designed by the guys on the forum.
Do you like olight
When I can't find a single listing for sale I know its going to be out of my price range lol.
well done!!
My guess is this flashlight is like a $600 Rick Hinderer versus a $200 Zero Tolerance knife. Or, clicky twisty with a "hope for the best" Chinese switch versus solid UI, dependable, American Made Flashlight.
what was the name of the light you referred to as your personal favorite everyday carry?
EagTac D25A Ti Edition
Do you like it better than the Olight S1 baton? I just lost my light the other day and I'm in the market for and EDC and I was just researching some lights and would like your opinion. Thanks buddy, and keep is the great videos!
I still love my Jetbeam RRT01
They’re nice lights.. I’ve got a friend with one. I could see spending the money if it really spoke to me though. Much like the sebenza I carry. The only real difference is that the knife is basically a one and done purchase. Keep it sharp, keep it clean, and it’ll work just as well in 30 years. Idk about the light. Yea you can replace the switch, driver, ect, but idk.
Can’t really talk tho.. although my edc light is an $80 eagtac d25c ti, I DID drop almost $200 to build a full ti Prometheus beta.. $145 for the light, another 35 for the clip and ti plug. My justification was that it’s got one of the better tints out there… although i almost prefer the eagtac (it’s freakishly excellent.. even compared to others with the exact same led). The other reasons being that it’s a twisty, meaning no real moving parts, and that it’s a aaa light, so I can always get a cheap battery somewhere. It’s also just a beautiful little light.
On the tint though.. the beta is great, even compared to my nickel beta. It wipes the floor with any other nichia lights I’ve tried as well. But put it beside the eagtac and it looks gross. Green. The eagtac is just about perfect. Don’t know what else to say about it. I’ve even bought two others. Exact same light (different years/body machining) but otherwise the same, same led. But they just don’t compare. The perfect one is also my favorite of the body styles to have come out, 2015 version.. so I pretty much consider this light to be irreplaceable until I find another that even comes close, but I’ve kinda given up at this point. Maybe in ten years when things go have advanced a little more.
I have the Mcgizmo mule and I don't make a lot of money I just saved up for a few months and Bam.. Had it about a year now and I can say I've never regretted it for a second :-) I don't know how big of a guy you are but I certainly don't find this diminutive in my pocket LOL it's there every single day and I have no issue with it getting in my way, of course I'm also not wearing skinny jeans. As a lover of titanium Baubles and someone who works nights in the security industry a good Mcgizmo just can't be beat in my humble opinion..
Oh by the way the Mcgizmos are made to be waterproof like scuba diving stuff. And I've dropped mine three stories onto concrete with little more than a scuff ..works perfectly fine ..same with the sapphire lens.. just bombproof!
What is the "rotary" light at 6:33?
Curious as well.
JetBeam rrt01, discontinued.
Check out the HDS Systems edc Rotary. Probably one the best flashlights money can buy. It's also probably THE most durable flashlight on the market. I've dropped mine off of the 3rd elevation (56ft) of a structure on to a solid concrete slab at the gas plant I was working at and the only damage was a scratch on the tail cap
@@devonodell9447 heard of elzatta or malkoff? I think those would both shrug off something like that as well
@@KimballPrecisionRifles I have heard of those. They probably would, but a led light with that kind of durability, and the adjustability/programming capabilities of the HDS Rotary, is what makes it one of the best, in my opinion anyway.
This looks like you'll be cutting down a Dark Lord of the Sith with this, Yoda.
You have a future in writing fortune cookies .
And here I thought I'd spent a ridiculous amount of money on my weapon lights....guess not. All of them cost less than that little guy. Crazy
What the hell no delica comparison? Now I'll never have any idea how big or small this thing is. I'm going to have to assume it's about 4 or 5 delica as or maybe espada size
Looks like Qui Gonn's lightsaber to me (not to bring up the prequels)
You could get a MBI HF-R and/or a HDS Rotary
A man with a phone
Talking about a flashlight
On the Internet.
Check out the new Surefire Onomatopoeia next!
Completely understand why people wouldn't pay this much for a Haiku. But having bought one in 2012 and having put some 1500+ hours of use on my Haiku (30 minutes walking the dogs before bed every night, not to mention all the other incidental uses, including a two week stint of using it nearly 12+ hours per day during a crazy period of work in my basement) in the nine years since, I can say that Don's light is a quality product. Tens (hundreds?) of thousands of clicks on it and it has never hiccuped even once -- it's been with me virtually 24/7 since I bought it ... it's been dropped, stepped on, accidentally kicked, abused, and it's just been tough as nails. The cost per hour of use for me at least is negligible and I have never regretted the purchase. Sometimes I flirt with purchasing something else and then I realize I'm simply fully content with the Haiku (ironically, it has almost certainly *saved* me money by prophylactically inoculating me against buying other lights).
500 dollars?!
Liked the video just because it's 12:34 long.
"you could really nerd out with customization" Because $500 flashlight isn't nerding out enough?
HOLY SHIT HE DIDN'T COMPARE THE DELICA. WHERE IS NICK WE WANT HIM BACK!
@Nick Shabazz - I think I'm with you on the price it's okay but not great, you're not getting the insane most high tech driver like on the BOSS 35 or the durability and rotary dial on the HDS systems edc rotary. I think you should do a review of the fw3a since you've done the emisar D4!
No Delica 4 size comparison? Is it possible that Greg Medford finally found the Nick, enslaved him for taking apart the Marauder and replaced him someone or something else? Get your Z-Hunter's ready guys, we need to save the Nick!
140 lumens? Na ill stick with my Titanium/Copper Olights S1 R2's....1000 lumens & Rechargeable!
interested until 475, not there
After yesterday's vid, this one is a snoozer! zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Ha ha.
Hi
Hi!
Somebody get Nick a BOSS! I want him to try one so bad but I can't stand to be apart from mine for more than a day haha. It's much easier to justify this sort of price with 3500 lumens, a secondary emitter, and a fully programmable interface.
+jamin101wolf I'm gonna pick one up from Tony at Everyday commentary
Glad to hear. You won't be disappointed. You might not carry it due to the cost-carry-comfort curve (as you call it) but it's fun to play with, even if just for a little while.
look forward to that review, 3500 lumens 🤣
ok, the rubber gland on that switch is the exact same part you'd find on a $3 lowes special. it's huge. it's heavy. it's $5 worth of metal and 30min on a lathe. the reflector is the most expensive part. it's got a $2 microprocessor reading a crappy mechanical switch. service sucks. "the light = soo pretty"... no.
you would have to be completely, utterly insane to pay ~$500 for this thing... and if you reeeallly want to, i'd be happy to make you one for $425. XD
YeefCo you also have to take into account that titanium is much harder to machine than stainless steel or aluminum and it wears the cutting tools on the lathes 10× faster as well. Which translates to being much more expensive to make. I agree with you that $500 is steep for this light but it's no different than someone paying $15,000 for a real diamond ring set in real solid gold instead of paying $60 for a gold plated cubic zirconium diamond ring. It's also the name of the maker you're paying for. Like paying $1,500 for a real Luis vitton instead of paying $50 for a decent knock off
That’s a bad troll in action. Before spitting on people’s work, why not ask questions first about why it has the price it has, which metal is used (you didn’t know it was titanium), etc. You have no idea of the amount of work put into the flashlight. Nor do I, but I don’t make baseless assumptions.
Then start making them and earn the easy money. But you can't and won't, and we both know it.
That price... it's how most people feel when I tell them my knife/pen costs $X.
Delica????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Hahaaa
Wow. I just don't it. The flood/throw might be nice but the lumens suck for a CR123 light. My 3 y/o Fenix PD22 puts out 500 lumens with 4 modes. Was about $70. Could have just posted the specs and price and forget the video..
Form me the fact that is not recargable through a usb port adds up to the "ugliness" of this or other edc led flashlights....
I'll stick with cheep lights. I like more lumens.
Joseph A yeah being able to get 1150 lumens for $30 is fine for me. 140 lumens is pretty weak, that's like Walmart $10 throw away level...
Spot on Nick I have tons of lights and would never pay that much because it screams robbery!
John Clark PAY for LIGHT robbery
Really overpriced and that's coming from someone that owned one. Buy a Malkoff MDC for a quarter of the price, pretty much the same light. Or buy an HDS for less and have a better light.
the price is almost a thousand now 🤣
The worst part of the custom light is that it doesn't even really look custom.. I think my mini Olights in brass, copper, and titanium look nicer, have x5 the lumens, and are way smaller. If this was done in timascus or something exotic, okay, maybe, but I just don't get the huge price for a boring light.
0/10, no Delica size comparison
*cough* *cough*...I guess, if you need to impress a light snob..?
That price is completely untenable. The size is unimpressive and the emitter underperforms compared to 1000+ lumen output that's capable of being reached with CR123A batteries and there's no strobe or SOS. The guys over at Candlepower must be laughing their heads off.
astrayael the guys at candlepower are the ones buying this light.
This is ridiculous. For that price it must come officially certified with some insane shock and water resistance like a COSC watch or something? Does it at least come with spare o-rings, a spare tail-cap button and a spare LED?
There is no impressive technological breakthrough or unique innovation on this light. Even the design seems unoriginal and uninspired. I don't see it appreciating or maintaining its value either so you wouldn't buy it as a collectors item nor would you even find it more functionally useful than a $30 light.
If you had $500 to spend on a flashlight you'd have to have rocks in your head to buy this. I'm looking at my Thrunite Archer 1A which cost ~$30USD and it has a really nice floody beam that is in neutral white, 200lm on highest setting, more modes, came with spare o-rings and a spare tail cap, it's lighter and it's actually fairly robust and still working after having dropped it a few times.
I got a collection of olights that cost me $700, 14 total! no way id pay that much for 1 light! And it's only 140lumens!! My OLIGHT i1r is about the same lol...
I’m a diver. Don McLeish (who makes the McGizmo line) is a diver as well. These lights are made for diving. They are extremely well made and waterproof to any depth a recreational diver will get too. In the world of diving, a mid grade light is around $400. Dive setups alone are usually $2500+ (more for me since I’m a Tech Diver). A lot of folks don’t understand this, so the light seems totally unreasonable (makes sense, because probably 95% of the people who buy it aren’t going to use it diving) but in the diving world it’s a reasonable price and the perfect size for a solid backup light. Hopefully that explains more why this is seemingly so expensive.
I am sorry. I am not going to pay that much just because it is made in the USA. There has to be actual value to justify the cost. I like supporting US manufacturers but not as a charity.
Made by one person may sound neat, but what that actually means is inefficient production methods. For something like a light, I would prefer more efficient production method and the lower price.
I wish this guy the best of luck and I hope he sells a lot of the lights.
I don't see and feel the value as well. Agreed 👍🏼
140 lumens for 500 bucks?
Itˋs only a few millimeters smaller than the Olight S2R Baton, but only takes 16340 cells (about 650mAh compared to the 3200mAh of the included 18650 battery of the S2R). Also the light output is a joke, your random 2$ chinese flashlight pulls that off, the XP-G2 will put out about 550 lumens - why not go for something like 400 lumens to make the flashlight at least viable to carry since it becomes somewhat useful then.
Why would people pay that much money for something that useless. A damn Nitecore Tip keychain light is more than twice as bright ... and USBA rechargable.
the price is a joke, why would anybody pay that much
To impress people?
Yeah, I don't get it either
