Naquele tempo, em que a Rainha foi visitar Portugal, Portugal era enorme, e ela veio a falar com o Salazar, ela veio porque o Salazar não queria viajar. É cómico, como aquele Portugal gigante desapareceu aos braços da revolução Socialista.

Algumas teorias dizem que não foi o socialismo, mas sim o próprio colonialismo o que "estragou" Portugal. A lógica é a seguinte: Apesar das colónias trazerem, de facto, vantagens (económicas, financeiras, políticas), estas não se sobrepõem aos esmagadores problemas decorrentes de toda a atenção e esforço que devem ser alocados para a vigilância, manutenção e expansão das mesmas, o que pode gerar o famoso "problema do cálculo económico". Além disto, é claro, temos a infame "mentalidade aristocrática", responsável pelo declínio dos impérios ibéricos.
E infelizmente, nada mudou.

Contudo, se Portugal (salazar) tivesse olhado um pouco ao que estava a acontecer no panorama internacional e tentasse uma aliança política como a Commonwealth, teríamos mantido um pouco da importância da altura. A mentalidade era demasiado conservadora. Ele devia ter começado a desenvolver as colónias, "dar tudo sem dar nada". O conflito interno e a corrupção é o motivo pelo qual Angola e Moçambique, por exemplo, estão na merda.
