The defendant is not a nice person. I was very impressed with his business and what it stood for but then after hearing him speak, i wouldn't be surprised if he pocketed that $2,000 himself. There is no way he takes adolescents off the street, trains them in 'music' enough so that they suddenly get a scholarship, they have to have finished high school first and if they are 'on the street' they presumably have not got a very high level of schooling. This all sounds very shady to me, the IRS needs to seriously look into his finances...
You can acquire scholarships far before graduation, however I do not at all believe his story at all. Especially when he wanted it to sound like he funded their education until she asked follow up question.
