I'm bringing you along on my biggest babbitt pour since I left the shipyards back in 1994. The two bearings are from a work boat and supply support for a five-inch propeller shaft, which was re-machined to new custom diameters.
The Babbitt material is ASTM B-23 Grade 1 Babbitt
Melting point solidus 223C 433F
Melting point Liquidus 371C 700F
Pouring temp 441C 825F
Part One, prepping for the pour, clearing the housings and making sure they mate up fine, creating the molding components and prepping the new Paragon Kiln and firing it up for the first time.
Made in China is a warning label!

Keith, thanks as always for everything you do to further and share the craft! I just wanted to chime in and say that you are truly one of my great teachers and heroes in life. While I may deeply disagree with the politics, that would never change my deep respect for you as a tradesman, an artist, and a person with a true love for his country and best intents in his heart. I can only hope there are many out there who can separate politics from friendship and respect for others as equal contributors to this great nation!🇺🇸🇺🇸

If your oven does not turn off when you open it...be certain you do not bump the heater elements! They could be electrified...and an impact can break the insulation!

Hi Keith, a good video again. I served my apprenticeship in a marine repair shop and we used to remetal a lot of bearings for ship main engine and generators. One of the things we used to to do before the pour was to tin the two halvs. Are you going to do that? Cheers Ian

Hello In your opinion, how can we do the adhesion of Babbitt material on MO40 material with high quality.
We use special tin plating for this type of tin plating operation. How do you do this? can you explain?

is this the first time you have poured Babbitt I have poured lots of babbitt and never had the problems you have had. We use Bear Shite to pack around the mandrel to keep the babbitt form leaking. and always have more babbitt melted than you need for the job. For boat shafts we pour smaller and then bore to fit the shaft. Not impressed with your set up.
