  • Brief Encounter film review. Weirdly underrated Classic, perhaps because of the subject matter and David Lean's more eye catching epic later films.

I watched this AGAIN the other evening, the movie that is. I’ve seen it so many, many times and it is without doubt my favourite film. Coward’s writing is impeccable. Lean’s filming flawless and captivating. Your review is concise and enlightening. I didn’t want Alec to emigrate. I wanted the affair to go on ….. Yes Laura lived in times when the woman stayed at home to look after the children. There’s no comparison today mores the pity! Her life was pretty mundane but happy enough. A chance encounter and her world is turned upside down such is the nature of love. You can’t avoid love …… Thank you for your review!

I love this movie! It’s very personal to me. The way she narrates her feelings to the man she’s the closest to, and of course she cannot verbally speak it. Love can come upon us unexpectedly and may have no moral compass. We have the choice to deny the feelings but you cannot stop the love. And loving someone is never a mistake, but acting upon it may be.

One of the difficulties in our secular age is to understand the place of Christianity in early thinking and action. "Thou shalt not commit adultery." together with the importance of a vow (in marriage, for example) were central to the Protestant version of Christianity (with its origins in Judaism) which the middle classes upheld, or tried to uphold, in this country. We have largely lost the notion of something being Right or Wrong. Everything today seems to be relative and, indeed, individual. My Right is not your Right etc. This is not a criticism, merely an observation.
A truly wonderful film wonderfully written, acted and directed. Look out for Victoria Wood's affectionate spoof.

A ‘tragic story’ yes.. but a story of all our little lives. The rach2 acts a heartbreaking reminder of the transcendent glory of ‘being’ itself and how we can be so easily and cruelly afraid embracing it. ‘It’ being the very essence of our own brief encounter with life itself.

Celia Johnson deserved the Oscar for this. Just perfection.

That was excessively harsh. Some touching moments. Thanks

Some pertinence but mostly puerile analysis. At least you tried.

It was a very good film about the doomed romance between two people married to other people. Why try to over analyse it like this.
