Writing Copperplate

  • We all focus on the letters but how often do we focus on writing a block of continuous text.
    This allows us to practise letter size and spacing. It requires you to really know your letters. Not only what the look like, how to write them, but also the amount of space the pick up.
    The other thing this forces you to reconcile is your control over the tool. Can you accurately make the same widths so all the hairlines are the same and the thickest parts are the same.
    This is also an exercise in breathing and not holding your breath.
    Go back and rule up the sheet to see what is not on the 55 or where they are not touching the horizontals.
    Be brutal with your correcting. Every little thing will add up so make sure you get all of the mistakes. List them and work them through.

    Inspiration to seek perfection in the flow and the rhythmic action within the script. In a nutshell, you are present in every stroke and the pen action flows throughout your entire body like a wave expanding time and time again. Thanks for sharing. Always a pleasure to see you in action.

    I have been watching your videos for about a year now and just came across this one. How beautiful that you are writing out a Psalm... no wonder the Lord has given you such a beautiful talent with which to glorify Him. Thank you for your patient teaching. I truly appreciate watching you write and the tips with which to improve my own writing.

    A beautiful choice of words, for He is GOOD for doing just that! The rhythm and consistency is what makes it as pleasing as the text to watch; both are agreeable and admirable! That's what I need to focus on consistency in the letters! That's it! Thank yu for that attention to detail that ✍ writing brings to the table! Keep up this good work...

      Carla Stewart consistency is one of the biggest issues facing calligraphers. But it all comes down to repetition of the same shape and tool control. So many calligraphers only focus on writing they don’t spend enough time focusing on intensive repetition. As the letters get better so too will the spacing.

    Thankyou for this Paul. I have missed you doing the videos since you have had a lot of things going on this past year. I have had a break in trying to learn copperplate for more than 12 months for various reasons but this is very inspiring to get started again. I have your manual but have been hesitant to start. Thanks again for your time 💕

    How much pressure do u put on the "pen" to make those thick lines? Also are you barely touching the paper to create those thin lines? I just picked up a "starter kit" with an oblique pen and few different nibs. Ive only tried one nib but the thin and broader strokes look the same?

    The idea of copper plate round hand or script in general is to make writing faster while still being instantly readable!

    • @PAScribe
      @PAScribe  Před 2 lety

      Not really. Speed of writing depends on a number of things as does legibility. Copperplate can be written at speed and retain legibility if it is a small xheight. The more distance the tool has to travel in the xheight the slower the script.

    Beautiful lesson!! I followed the exhales on the down strokes. Do you continue your exhale when you whip up a bottom curve/ligature after a shadeded stroke, or do you change to inhale at the bottom apex?

    • @PAScribe

      Oscar Carranza you forget there is an change over from inspire to expire. This is where the turn is. It is not a whip, if you think that fast you will always miss the turn.
