Being a certified brick and stone mason, I am skeptical about the longevity of this stove. There are zero refractory materials being used. Not sure if those brick are Terra Cotta, or calcite clay, but those products do not hold up to high heat temperatures. Nor will the Portland based mortar. Looks nice, but won't last one year.
I just took a look at Ianto Evans' book on rocket mass heaters and apparently any type of brick will end up cracking. Since this seems to be intended for outdoors and looks easy/quick to do, it would makes sense to go cheap and use soft common ( and old) brick. If you don't mind rebuilding often that is. The joints look too thick and those irregular bricks would be the first to fail I think.

@ Rusty Beatty - yes, either this never gets up to the 'rocket' temperatures needed for clean combustion (all those flames) or it will fail bigtime - or both. So sad...😢
Portland cement won't stand the heat for long. This stove is a wonderful design, nevertheless, though I don't understand why this guy didn't use a mixture of clay and sand instead, which in turn will make this stove to last longer and the toxicity of the burning cement will be avoided. Not to minimize the amazing skills of this man, but a metal one would be more convenient since it can be portable as well. Greetings from Toronto.

This is about the pattern and skill not whether his materials will stand the test of time, they are dismantled ready for other projects. We have found it immeasurably helpful and have created our outside oven using the correct materials and his pattern. I guess he got his bucks from you since A. u watched it and B. you commented Good job there 👏
I think is great. But I think the very top layer of bricks could been removed for making it smaller, and the upper hole in my opinion could also be smaller for placing a pan.
I remember many years ago, helping to repair/replace a fireplace in a house and the mortar used to cement the large concave stone that formed the back part of it was made from sand and lime, as it wasn't prone to expansion or contraction. The only downside I remember was if the mortar came into contact with the beginning of the chimney stack courses that happened to have a layer of soot on them. The chemical reaction didn't half create some heat!

Про смесь цементную промолчу (в коментах ниже уже указали). Но арматуру на без зазоров положили! Руки им оторвать! Ведь всю "печь" порвёт на десятой (одинадцатой-пятнадцотой) про топке!
Вот не понимаю зачем печь с таким сильным подувом. Когда готовиш что нибуть никогда не требуется очень сильный огонь. Обычно требуется равномерный слабый жар что для овощей, что для мяса.
I just bought some fireplace mortar mix in a tube. Not going to cement all that together but just the cracks to control the air. Mine cannot be a permanent item in the yard.

Yep; Portland burns off and leaves sand only.
I was thinking the same. It will either just crack or even blow apart from the heat.
You do not even need to be stone mason to understand that.

Это специальная, огнеупорная смесь для кладки печей. Глина нервно курит в сторонке
Самое главное в этой конструкции - деревянная ручка прикрученная на саморез
Экономичная, компактная. Удобно брать в пеший поход.

Это не ракетная печь, а бункерная. В ракетной печи в очаг дрова не попадают.
Попробуй за место цемента : глину + песок (кварц )+ 5% от массы ( тальк) + 5% от массы ( стекловолокно - ворс)= 100% запас прочности.
Они тупые ,они не смогут.

При шве около 3 мм исключается подсос воздуха при горении.

Цементный раствор не используют для печи , есть специальный раствор для кладки печей , он не лопается при нагреве .
