I was at that show. Glad I got to see Earl once in my life before he passed. One less thing on my bucket list.
I really wish I could have seen him perform. Earl was a phenomenal musician. Master of his craft. He made the banjo become a most coveted instrument. Only Earl could make it what it is today. Maybe if I am blessed, I will get to meet his spirit and sould in the afterlife. Another amazing thing about Earl was that he was humble. Never fighting over the spotlight. He just wanted to perform, enjoy the music. I loved watching footage of him performing with his sons. You could see him glow when his sons were performing.

My pops could play a mean banjo and when I was a boy he told me Earl Scruggs was the greatest banjo player the world ever witnessed and I believe him.
The man is in his mid 80s here, not a note missed and still pickin like he was 50 years before🪕

I was at Texas Roadhouse steakhouse in Parker, CO this last summer and had a young server named Scruggs, so I had to ask... and he said yes, he's the great grandson of Earl. Apparently Earl passed some time ago as the young man said he had only met Earl a couple of times. Also said he was the only descendant that did not inherit any musical abilities. Anyway, RIP Earl, you're a legend.

Earl did a fantastic job playing that night!! The man was 85 years old when that was shot, there is alot of so called banjo pickers half his age or under that will not even be in his class ever. I would like to see anybody at 85 doing a tour and playing like he did. A legend in his own time. Go Earl!!!!

I just retired and I am strongly considering taking up the banjo. All due to the phenomenal Earl Scruggs. I have a musical background and have had to put all my hobbies on the backburner. I want to learn the 5 string banjo w/ the Scruggs style 3 finger picking. I hope it's not too difficult. 🙏🙏🙏
One wonders just how many hundreds of times Earl played this song through the years!!! But yet enjoyed it everytime.

I don't know but he died in his late eighties and I hope I can pick anywhere near that well ever in my life. Nothing greater than dying still be able to do what you loved the most. A life well lived, Earl!

R.I.P. Earl. He had a pretty good run, 88 years. I saw him play with his sons in 1975, the hottest concert ever. He was pretty stunned by the audience reaction, did two encores. He was a great showman, very gracious.
Absolutely true!! An American Legend!!! I'm so sad to report that Mr. Earl Scruggs passed away today 3/28/12, at the age of 88. Your impact on American music will live forever and your fans will never forget you! R.I.P. Earl Scruggs!

Earl was clearly struggling here....but he could still pick. I wept for days when he passed.

How sad I am of Earl Scruggs passing. I went to a Blue Grass festival in Kerville, Texas.
There Mr. Scruggs and RIP Earnest Tubb were there....what a show they put on.
What music they played...least we have their memories and music that they left behind.

you sure got that right, i saw him in 1974 at ucla in los angeles and put my first 250 mastertone on layaway. he was touring as the earl scruggs revue, when he played sally goodin', i was all in. seeing him live was really somethihg i will never forget. he broke a string, pulled one from somewhere installed it, tuned it, in 10 sec. a real professional. he does out pick men half his age still. I dont think he has past away.

There is a video on you tube that covers historic performances of Earl Scruggs with his sons and Doc Watson and several others, very enjoyable BUT in it Earl explains he wanted to expand his music with the Banjo and not play, as he puts it,'Flint Hill Special' over, and over and over again. Yet he could not escape it! It seems that's all his fans kept asking for and expecting of him, great as it always was. How frustrating for him!

The first few seasons are in black & white but I think it was beginning in the third season they were in color.

Yep, he's one of a kind and we're grateful for him, His 1948 original recording of Foggy Mountain Breakdown I used to think it was a trick of the record. BUT the biggest "trick" was the abilities of this man himself: I mean you could probably set the Atomic clock in Fort Collins Colorado to that 1948 recording of his FMB. noone's ever been able to touch THAT recording SINCE, Earl's timing, pickup notes melody keep him uniquely unchallenged. His musical head and those fingers will never fade :)

The banjo is the 2nd hardest instrument in the world to learn to play, right behind the fiddle, my dad was very good at playing the banjo, ive tried learning a bunch of times and i now know a little bit of foggy mountain breakdown, flint hill special, and jingle bells. A banjo player told my dad if you have five minutes to practice do it, if you have 15 minutes, practice it. My dad was also friends with Mike Snider from hee haw and the grand ole opry.

Earl was in a class by himself when it came to banjo pickin. He was the master of the banjo.

I met Earl at the letterman show.and got a photo with him..I showed him a photo I have with Bev Hillbillies producer Paul henning...I may be the only person with BOTH photos..if only I had Irene Ryan lol..oh well.. RIP

The term gets thrown around a lot these days. Earl Scruggs was, is, and always will be the GOAT! Often copied, never to be replaced.
I have heard some good versions of this song played by other pickers, but no one can match Earl. It just sounds great.

This is in Charlotte, NC in early 2010. He played at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass concert in late 2011 and that was his last big stage appearance.
If this is the concert that I think it is, Mr. Scuggs is performing at the Malcolm Brown Auditorirum in Shelby, NC in the Fall of 2009. He would perform in Shelby, his hometown, in Jan 2010 at our Don Gibson Theater; but I am not sure he had any other big concerts after that locally although he was known to show up at the local bluegrass festival and play with couple of the bands. Just a regular guy.... The lost of Mr. Scruggs has left a heavy heart on our town he will be missed-- RIP
