I'm 55 and I can remember my cousin and I walking over this bridge in 1979 when I was 10. We had just come from the Sack Cheri Cinema on Charles Street which is now long gone.

1 Smoot is 5 ft 7 in. Named after an MIT fraternity pledge Oliver R Smoot who laid down across the bridge to see how many Smoot the bridge was.

Nice, thanks for the info! Smoot is a good word for a measurement.

@@exploring-new-england There you go. My vague recall was about right.

A "smoot" is an M.I.T. unit of measurement. I believe it is intended to be humorous.

There might be a Wikipedia article about it. From vague memory I recall there was an M.I.T. student named "Smoot" who was unusually tall, and he was "adopted" as a unit of measurement. Thus "10 Smoots" would be 10 times his actual height.

I was up there 2 days before! Love these cities. When I was growing up I could see the Hancock Tower out of my bedroom window. Great video, and congrats on accomplishing all of those smoots haha. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoot

The Hancock building as originally designed had wide open space at its base. Now it is all cluttered with boutiques.
And one was able to view it from Boylston Street. Now it is obscured by an office building between Boylston and the building.
It was a nice place to explore. Now it sucks.
