- Does your BMW E60 display the Passenger Restraint System error message? This can often be caused the passenger seat occupancy sensor. This kit bypasses that sensor and the passenger seat belt sensor to eliminate this error, while retaining full airbag operation.

HEAD'S UP! - I bought this same kit in Oct 2021 on eBay. I only skimmed the written instructions for my order since I watched the usual high-quality E39Source video and followed those VERBAL instructions faithfully. Turns out the dip switches for the Oct '21 kit for my 2006 E60 are #1-ON, #2-OFF, #3-OFF (not ON, ON, ON per the E39Source video). Pulled my hair out for weeks. Serves me right, "the manufacturer reserves the right to make changes without notice to make lives miserable"!! Love your videos E39Source! Keep up the good work.

Congratulations on your acquisition! The E60 M5 is a maintenance intensive vehicle, but it's worth it if you LOVE it. This is thankfully an 'easy' fix compared to some of the other ones. Good luck!

Very nice video. I ordered from your link. Thank you! Now that I am looking at my seat, I see a two wire connecter at about the same place yours was. No three wire. When I placed my order on eBay, I double checked to make sure it was compatible with my car. (Bmw. 2011 550i) it was.
A 2011 5 series is an F10 chassis, which could be totally different. Is that not included in the recall for the occupancy sensor?

ALSO BONUS ADVICE: go to your local salvage/ junk yard and take a knife or blade and just cut out a mat from a same year model car, I personally replaced me e93 (convertible 2011 bmw 328i) with a sensor from an e92 coupe. Mats are able to be used on either passenger or driver, it does NOT matter! Total job cost me 7usd. Got code cleared by random local import shop because it only takes 2 min for them to do it and they'll usually do it to keep you as a customer! So call your local shops to get it cleared free! Screw bypassing it get it legit fixed less than 10usd
Hi. Really detailed video. I’ve been dealing with this situation for about a year. Chimes every time someone is in the passenger seat. Only issue: will this fix work on a 2017 320i? When I go to eBay to buy the kit, it says it’s incompatible - although it wouldn’t be the first time an eBay seller said that when it turned out to be fine. Any ideas?
I've never serviced an F30 before, so I don't have any idea if it would work with that. That car is so new, is there a warranty or recall on this defective part? BMW should make this right for you.
I found your video very helpful, i have a bmw x1 28i 2012 e84 and i cant seem to find a bypass thing online, the one you use doesnt fit my car
Did you check that sellers page? They probably make one for the E84.
I know this is two years old but for anyone reading. You can go to a scrap yard and take a mat from a crashed car. Then take the mat to a seat upholstery business and have them fit it without paying 3k to BMW.
This isn't as cheap as a bypass but you get a functioning mat. A reason why you would want to do it this way is that the mat actually detects weight. For example if you have a child or child seat in the front the airbag won't deploy in a crash, only if an adult is sitting there. It's an important safety feature in your car

Good afternoon sir I followed the instructions you did, but had a issue. I couldn't get the back cover on the back of the yellow tab to come off so I can do the seat belt pins. When you get this please get back to me thanks.
Please reference 6:43 in the video. Depress the tabs (one on each side if I remember correctly) and it will slide off.

Would simply fastening the seatbelt even if no passenger was in the seat combined with the occupancy sensor complete the circuit? Trying to determine if I can avoid the installation of the seatbelt sensor.
In our car, having the seatbelt connected or disconnected did not make a difference.
Thnks 4 tip, I tried, but my bmw it has major battery drain since collision and airbags deployed, even with car turned off. Any suggestions.
That could be anything, you should have it inspected by professionals.

Have an 04 545i with some purple and white wire that's been removed from the plug harness and taped off. Any suggestions to what it is or why it would be unplugged? Thanks in advance.

Just purchased a 2006 530xi e60 model and I’m having the same issues. Was wondering once I finish setting it up and reconnect the battery will those lights go off automatically or will I still need to code them out?
The standard 5 series actually has a recall for this, BMW will replace the occupancy sensor matt for you. But to answer this question, I think you'll need to reset the lights. If you don't, it might go away after a few days though.
E39Source yeah I’m aware of the recall. I called it in to bmw originally and they rolled me that the owner of the car before me actually took care of the car in 2011. The car has never been in an accident and the other day when I picked my friend up from his house and he sat down in the passenger seat the airbag light and seatbelt light came on the screen. So I figured the bypass would be a good idea.
I would let BMW take a look at it though, if the second matt has gone bad already, they should replace it again!
I got one off Amazon...the box for the Matt occupied sensor... itself.came with two other additional wires...the ones for seatbelt were same as yours....any idea what these prongs wou connect to?

You need to clear them.
Hey guys, check with the dealer about the warranty for this problem. I received a letter yesterday saying that that my 2005 BMW 530i has a warranty for the passenger restraining system, is not a recall but if you have problems with it take it to the dealer and they will fix it for free. If you already fixed it the factory will reimburse your money if you give them the receipt. Good luck.
The current recall doesn't affect the M5 for some reason. The same parts were use don all 5-series models, so I don't understand why the M5 isn't part of it.
It covers some cars and others it does not. I had an 06 e90 with 90k miles they fixed for free(occupancy sensor), yet I have had several newer lower mileage cars, same exact problem(which is a defective item BMW knows is bad engineering)and they will not cover it under a recall. I have two E93's now with this issue. 09 50k and 08 67k. Cars are mint, never wrecked, both occupancy sensors defective.
Question, I have a E92 M3 and i assume the systems is identical and i am planning to install bucket seats. Does the passenager airbag still works if you just code both the occupancy mat and seat belt connection to not active? Or youll have to use the bypass to fool the system to always think there is a pasenger?
The systems are not identical, but they are similar. Do you mean coding those to not active in the airbag module using NCS? I have never attempted that and do not know exactly how that logic works in the module.

Does this work on a 2006 325i e90
I bought the kit, installed the kit. Cleared the airbag fault codes with ista, codes went away for a drive cycle, codes are back next day. Ready to pull my hair out.

It's got to be under there somewhere! Might be tucked up in the bottom of the seat with some tape or something.
For the seat belt harness, did you have to reprogram the car after disconnecting the negative cable?
Negative cable of the battery? No, this will prevent error codes from being reported.
E39Source wait you stated that you would disconnect the battery, the negative pole I think to do the passenger seat belt portion of it. What did you disconnect if anything and was there any reprogramming like when the battery is replaced.
If you simply disconnect the negative pole from the battery before starting the job, and then reconnect it after the job, there will be no required coding or programming, and no errors.
I did this for my e36 as wel because the problem kept getting back.
Really easy fix and its doesnt really matter.
Hey E39source, I have a 528i here in Canada..the passenger buckle was blown as well so I was getting tow error codes..buckle and occupancy sensor. I installed the buckle and did the bypass and seatbelt bypass..the buckle code cleared and so occupancy but it came back on after a couple seconds. Any ideas?

Hey e39source I bought the kit and installed it today but the restrains system malfunction warning still showing despite installing it, I ensured the wire went all the way in for the seat belt and the one for the sensor put in correctly and its blinking blue, what might be the cause of the warning to still show or I need to erase the code, any advice will be highly appreciated.
The code will need to be reset for the message to go away, assuming the bypass is working. I'd recommend the Carly to do this. @t

Connected mine.. checked over. Still no luck. Will try Carly. BUT mine does not have a blinking led it's just plastic where there's supposed to be a light I assume? Took cover off, looks to be legit, but no led diode

Hi ive put both by pass sensors in and airbag light and seat belt light is stil on. Also had it plugged in and its saying no codes
If properly installed, you should be able to reset the codes and have he lights disappear after re-starting the vehicle.
Used a nearly identical kit for my e60 (same box, different brand label), installed it, cleared codes. Worked for about 90 seconds and the error came back 😑
Sounds like the installation didn't work, check to see that the pins are fully inserted in the proper ports, one of mine didn't click in and cause the kit to initially not work. Once I corrected the problem, it worked and has for 4 years now!

For the seatbelt why you did all that job? You could brought a fake insert of seat belt buckle and put it in the seat belt buckle
That would be incredibly half-ass. Then anytime somebody rides in the car they would have to remove that fake insert and put it somewhere.

N55. E60 is the 5-series chassis from 2004-2010, so that does not apply to you.

What kind of obd scanner did you use to reset i have just a basics one that clears codes, i installed the kit lights are still on and no codes come up on my reader? Has anyone else ran into this
You need a BMW specific scanner that can scan/reset the airbag module as well. You likely only have one that can communicate with the DME (engine ECU).
@E39Source so I got an advanced scanner it cleared the lights but they came back on a minute later I have all the switches on , on everything is plugged in properly not sure why it hasn't worked
The manufacturer of this product updated the device, and the switch settings from this video are not longer correct for USA vehicles. Read the product description on Ebay to see the correct position of the switches now. After correcting, reset the codes again. @@gkent5146
in the UK the connection is under the seat not in front but the rest is the same.
I'm still getting the warning on the screen but the seat belt not on warning is not on. How do I clear the warning on screen?
The UK might have a slightly different setup. Do you have a seatbelt warning? I thought that was just a USA thing. If you still have error codes, check the install. Make sure everything is correct is tight. You can reset the lights with a Carly scanner, INPA, or other diagnostics software. If you don't have any of those, the dealer can do it but it'll cost an hour's labor.
E39Source yes i still have error codes but i havnt tried yet to delete them. I have a Creatdor 310 which i hope will work.
UK version is under the seat as i said and i found it easier to unbolt the seat and tip it back as its only 4 bolts.

its attached under the passenger seat from the front. its near the seat pad connector. Its not hidden but i found it easier to unbolt the seat and tip it back. Only 4 bolts. Makes it a lot easier to get to the wires. I dont know how to put pictures on here but i didnt take any.

How did you put everything back into the yellow harness?

I set up everything as you advised and I still have the warning. On the device under the seat the blue light flashes but eventually turns off. From the instructions it should stay on. Any advice?
The code will need to be cleared before it disappears.
@@E39Source it didn't show up on an app I use on my laptop or the small orange code readers but I'll have my friend come clear it tomorrow. But shouldn't the blue light stay on?
@@damen224 You need an app that can read the airbag module, not the DME. I recommend Carly, ISTA, or INPA. I am not sure about the blue light, I haven't looked at this thing in over 3 years.

They might go off on their own if you're patient. Otherwise, you'll need a BMW scanner to reset the airbag module.

Double and triple check the pin location and installation of the pins, if not fully snapped in, they will push out when you put the seat connector back on and cause the module to not work.

I'm located in GA and I have all 3 switches on position.
@@panda-si9zt On the newer kits from this vendor, switch 1 should be set to ON, and switches 2 & 3 should be set to OFF.
I've read the pinned comment, and i tried that today, but it pulled up another code, and when I switched it back all 3 on that 1 code stays left. I know it works cause it's lit up green led.

The half electric seats are likely wired very differently. What code do you have stored in your airbag module that you're looking to eliminate?

Hi I bought the kit and installed it and the air bag light went away but now it cane back. It's the same code and I can't clear it. Any ideas?
Sounds like it has come loose or has malfunctioned.
There was already one installed when I bought the car so I thought it was faulty so I bought another one. If I take out the front part(red & black wire) and plug it back in the air bag ought will clear for about 30 seconds and cone back on?? Any ideas?

Did not work for my E93. Everything installed correctly and triple checked. The place that sold these on Ebay no longer lists them and they have dozens of negative feedback due to this item.

To ya'll doing this this part most likely has a 15 year unlimited miles extended warranty from BMW. Some models even has a recall. Contact BMW HQ to see what they can do for you!
The recall coves all E60 5-series model BUT the M5... which used the same parts as the 550i, 545i, down the line etc. Damn BMW.
@@E39Source the recall only covers E60s produced in certain months which of course mine is not. I talked to HQ. They told me they all have extended warranty even if you're not covered by the recall. I had mine deleted but i plugged it back in today. As soon as it throws the code again it's going to the dealer

Hi sotemot. I'm not a BMW engineer and perhaps you aren't either, so let's be careful and clear in providing advice to others who might actually rely on it. You are correct - installation of a bypass will cause passenger side airbags to deploy in an accident that triggers specific airbag activation sensors. The passenger seat occupancy sensor IS a safety feature, as well as being a feature that can limit repair costs after a minor accident. How is it a safety feature? The occupancy sensor detects whether a passenger is heavy enough/big enough and in the right position to benefit from deployment of the airbag. Alternatively they could be hurt or killed by it. Let's say dad is parked outside a shop waiting for mum to return, with junior standing in the passenger side footwell, leaning on the dash, looking out the window and watching for his mum. Some random idiot comes around the corner too fast and collides with mum or dad's car, hard enough to trigger the front airbags. No one is sitting on the passenger seat, so ordinarily the passenger side airbag would not go off, but because of the bypass it now does. The child is blown out the back window by the airbag and probably killed. The German engineers anticipate that people will use the safety equipment as intended, and maintain it as designed. They also ensure it is deactivated when it isn't needed or could cause harm. People need to understand that bypassing the system will cause the airbags to deploy in circumstances where they can be harmful rather than helpful. Other factors to be considered with a bypass are: dangers arising from placing baby capsules on the passenger seat; and obviating the proper performance of multistage airbags. A bypass is handy for diagnosing a fault. It can also make a light on the dash go away. A bypass is NOT a satisfactory repair to a faulty safety restraint system, regardless of how annoying the bings and warning lights are. Yes, car manufacturers should make more reliable occupancy sensors and ones that are cheaper to replace.
I appreciate this comment and the value within! These are valid points that should be read and considered by anyone considering a bypass. For us, it's the idea solution. Nobody under 20 years old will ever ride in this car. So saving a few thousand dollars was the way to go, for us.
Valden23 comment of the year right here. This should be pinned. Was thinking the same thing. This is an irresponsible way to handle the issue and did not repair the vehicle and made the vehicle unsafe. Hopefully no one else buys this vehicle as it could cost them or a loved one their life by using this bypass method. Why doesnt work for me i did all the same
They have changed the position of the switches since I made this video. Please refer to the instructions that came with your specific kit on how to align the switches on the device, or visit the Ebay sellers page to determine the proper orientation. After making this correction, you'll again need to re-scan the car, clear the codes, and cycle the key in the ignition.
Why do people think fixing it this way makes the car more unsafe? ALL AIRBAGS WILL ALWAYS DEPLOY WITH THIS FIX IMPLEMENTED! The passenger seat occupancy sensor is NOT a safety feature. If I were to guess, it is simply an example of good old German over-engineering.

Yes, car manufacturers should make more reliable occupancy sensors and ones that are cheaper to replace.
Passenger seat sensor is there so airbag won't go off with rear facing child seats, or basic objects. Airbag can kill children or send objects flying in the car

I would imagine that the E90 uses the exact same parts.
E90 uses the same part, but this doesn't work often. I don't know why it works for some and not others, but this particular company has a lot of negative feedback from this item and no longer lists them for sale where I bought mine. Maybe try another brand or something, but waste your money on this with a warning that it did not work for me or many, many others after being installed correctly.

Ya cheap fix like the driver wiper Bering replacement that BMW won't do just replace the hole are at 150£ wen on eBay 10£ for the Bering replacement kit that takes 30 minutes to any one with basi tools and no experience

I bought the delete kit and installed it same as you no issue. Is it the same as service resets?
This code will need to be reset with a scanner of sorts. I recommend the Carly.

There are at least two sensors that will need to be 'hacked' to avoid warnings with no passenger seat in the car: the occupancy sensor, and seat belt contact sensor. You will also have codes for no passenger seat control module without the seat installed.
E39Source so would I be better off seeing if someone can code it out then? Trying to go to the drag strip and lose these 54lb seats
E39Source with the first 2 codes on it won’t allow the car to go over 100
@@Jakejacobsonn Ah, I understand. Well- the car was never designed to be operated with only one seat, so there aren't simple toggles to 'turn off' the other seat. I have not attempted something like this before, but there are likely ways to avoid codes/warnings if you're crafty enough.
@@Jakejacobsonn Wow, thats surprising. I would certainly attempt this method at least to bypass the occupancy sensor, but the belt contact will likely have the same result. Maybe somebody makes a bypass for that too?
Anyone have any problems with this,I did it the first time and everything was fine no alarms came on,now a month later seatbelt and airbag light is back on 🙄😡
It is still working for us. Yours may have gotten disconnected under the seat, I would advise checking out the connections.

@@E39Source ya I just did that again disconnect it and put it back on and the alarm is still going off for the seatbelt and airbag,dose it usually go on the divers seat aswell 🤔 the one I fitted was for the passenger seat,now I’m thinking it could be the drivers seat aswell 🤔?
@@bigwon4056 The drivers seat should not need this. Pull the codes to see exactly what the car is unhappy with, it is probably another SRS issue, but unrelated to this passenger's seat occupancy sensor.

Check that the pins are fully inserted and everything is tight. I had to go back and press them in harder to get it working.

@@E39Source I tried it again & the same thing happens nothing LOL I even unplug the harness n connected directing I even disconnected the battery n did a reset with Carly I don't know what else to try.

It is in fact $3,500 vs $45 which is a huge amount of cash, but not for the same result, becouse if You drive alone the passengers airbag will pop out upon accident. Are you sure Sir that there is no aftermarket seating matt installation available? I just cannot believe there are no cheaper options than BMW dealership. If so my apologies.
Why do you care if the passenger airbag deploys with no passenger in the seat? More airbags to replace when repairing? (Pro-tip, old BMWs crashed to that extent will be condemnateed). That's really the only explanation I can find for this system to be there in the first place, it has NOTHING to do with safety...
