    I picked one of these up off the road in Mosman with a pair of Wharfedale speakers. The speakers are fantastic, the amp is doing the same thing. Going to give this a go, thanks for the effort of making this !

    Thanks, this would have to be the best best diagnosis videos I have come across. I have a no sound issue with my Onkyo TX-SR313 that you can hopefully point me in the right direction to try and rectify. At one stage it was not powering up due to circuit protection but came good after going through the reset procedure. Worked fine for a while after that then I started getting delay in the audio coming through with the delay progressively becoming longer. It was out to some 15 minutes and then progressed to no sound at all. Visually inspection shows no obvious burnt components / bulged caps. I have eliminated speaker relays as the issue as they click in ok and it would be unlikely that all 5 of them are faulty. A lot of posts talk about bad caps / DSP chips on the HDMI board but I am getting video out (setup display works) and HDMI input is being detected ( If I switch output between RAW / PCM/ Dolby on source TV signal the display on amp changes accordingly). Amp also turn on / off through HDMI CEC function. The one odd thing I have found though is that the service manual test procedure that displays firmware brings up a series of ?????? when I query the DSP chip. Any ideas where I should start with this??

    I've just had a TX-SR501E from the local flea market, seller insisted it's a Texas IC blown out, cheap to fix. Well it ain't that expensive it seems, same cap went bad, with no visible damage to the board - though i'm not sure about the vias.
    That was quite a red herring to chase in the beginning for me too, power rails, circuit diagrams and whatnot. Thanks for the video, i might have taken a few more hours measuring about! :)

    I've brought home a few Onkyo AVRs mostly the TX-NR555 models and its always a output transistor that gets blown. I don't think they use Super Caps anymore to help retain the programing.

      Interesting, i have an Onkyo AV receiver that turns on but wont boot, as in pressing the power button turns it on and you can hear some relays click, but no power to the LED screen and doesnt make music. might have to take a look, im guessing something simple is blown and no power to the control unit

    Haha! I was on the edge of my seat hoping the battery cleanup would work. I was JUST as excited as you when you powered it up and exclaimed, "it's working! I fixed it! "
    Lol
    Way to go! Riveting CZcams!
    I've had a newer Onkyo r380 go out on me last night. In the middle of watching TV I heard a bit of a "plossive" sound and then the unit went into protective shut down.
    I've followed the troubleshooting steps (unplug everything. Wait an hour, etc.) but it won't come back on for more than 2 or 3 seconds before shutting off again.
    Any ideas?

    • @NearFarMedia
      @NearFarMedia  Před 5 lety

      Hah, yeah, I was pretty happy it worked in the end. :)
      If you can find a service manual for your model or a similar model, there is often more advanced troubleshooting steps to narrow down what part is faulty inside, then you can start tracing the schematics to narrow down to the exact location of the fault as I did in the video.
      I know Onkyo had a bit of a problem with bad capacitors for a while, but I'm not sure about the latest units.. Might be a place to start looking to begin with...

    Mr.
    I have the HT-R550, its displays turns off after a few minutes. I am not a certified technician, nevertheless I found out when the Cirrus Logic IC CS42518-CQZ got heat the displays fails... Applying circuit board cleaner the propelent cools it down and the display turns back on AGAIN for a moment...
    At this point I have the circuit diagrams and I already ordered a replacement chip JUST IN CASE the IC is damaged. I suspect it is not and MAYBE a surrounding capacitor is.
    I'll try to check the capacitors... in the meantime, I'll appreciate any comment regarding this issue.
    Greetings, from MX

    This is the most helpful video I have found hands down for working through schematics. I originally had the same issue (intermittent no power on, only standby), but now it seems like it has morphed into a worse issue. It does power on when I plug it in, (and I hear relay click, and speakers will play, then randomly shut off after a few minutes). But none of the front panel buttons work anymore (except the volume pot). So I took it apart, and started checking pins with a volt meter. The two 13v outputs from the standby transformer that feed over from power board to the microswitch area are both outputting 19 volts!! Yikes. Is this a bad transformer? The area around the standby transformer is oily also, but I am not sure where the oil came from. I am not sure what to check/test next.

    • @NearFarMedia
      @NearFarMedia  Před 2 lety +1

    Hi! I have a similar receiver but different issue...and if you might have some insight or two cents I’d be greatly appreciative! It’s an old TX-DS797, a tank of receiver that’s still in regular use. The front display no longer lights up. It was inconsistent for a good while (sometimes worked, sometimes not) but now stays off. Audio is fine. There just happens to be a 797 display on eBay right now and I grabbed it. Should it more or less modularly plug right in (assuming it’s even the problem) or is there soldering & such that will likely be involved? Hope you don’t mind the question, and thank you! :)

      If you dont have one you can try to point a hair dryer at the caps while powering on!When it turns on you can spray the caps with upside down can of air to cool it back down and watch see the dead cap

I have a tx-Ds 656 since new over 20years and still gives a sensational sound for both 5.1 surround sound and music and to when listing quality 2 channel music via Bose 701s. Recently started a speaker hymn and spoken with some local tech’s to inherit noting but poor unsubstantiated expressions and commentary. I have since try to reach Onkyo australia but no go. I’ve been told by some armatures that it is due to aged power supply’s drop value?? And requires a transformer replacement.

      I'm not sure where to buy spare parts spare from ebay or Onkyo. Sorry I can't be of more help.
      I do know that some models had problems with bad capacitors on the HDMI board, so replacing all the electrolytic capacitors on that board with good quality capacitors might fix the problem maybe.

    • @stormkhan4250
      @stormkhan4250 Před 4 lety

      If done some searching around about info on this issue too and it appears Onkyo put in capacitors rated to about 80 degrees on these boards. Unfortunately, the position of the board inside the unit is near the top...where all the heat rises to and the capacitors suffer for it. As NFM has said, if you replace the capacitors, use 105 degree rated ones. If that fixes your problem then I'd suggest placing something like a 8cm diameter 12 volt fan (from an old PC or something) on top of the unit over this board and have it on when you are using the unit. This helps suck out the hot air and keep that HDMI board cooler to prevent it heating too much.

      I know there was a big problem with the electrolytic capacitors on the HDMI boards in Onkyo amplifiers a while back. There was a 'secret' service bulletin that Onkyo released to their service centers about it.
      I fixed another Onkyo amplifier by replacing all the electrolytics on the HDMI board a number of years ago.
      You can remove all the existing surface mount ones and replace them with normal through hole parts (Judst cut the legs short and solder them directly to the pads).
      Just be sure to use good quality capacitors with the same capacitance rating, no lower voltage rating (a bit higher is ok) and at least 105degree rated.
