We honestly act like a married couple that is completely exhausted with their kids even though we're just kids.
Soon after I started dating my boyfriend, who is Japanese, I started to call him babe. And so when he tried to find a pet name for me.... they were all so strange and continue to be quiet strange even a year later LOL. It has ranged from the simple "babe" to "sweet nuts" to "smore/marshmallow" to "cupcake." yeah.. its be .. fascinating and hilarious. It sure makes him laugh when he hears my reaction to some haha.

Whenever I start getting exasperated with my partner or I'm going to ask make a request that I think is unimportant, I call him "darling" but in a thicker Spanish (my first language) accent than usual, as if in emphasis. I have no idea why or how it started but it just felt right.

+Kira Suzuki I wanna say both. The more you practice a speech in public, the easier it gets. So I think for him, the more he does videos, the more comfortable he becomes. Rachel of course plays a big part in her being his cheerleader in all that he trys to do. He said in another video regarding comments saying he is expressionless that he sees that too and is trying to work harder on his expressions. Of course most of us said to Jun, just be youself. love these two!

One thing I love about the Japanese language is how literal it is. For someone with high functioning autism, that's a pretty big deal.
The first thing you called him sounded like you were going to call him "sticky buns". You should hide cameras in your apartment and do a blog where you randomly call Jun pet names and we see his reactions. "Sugar" "honey" "baby" "my love" "sticky buns" "cutie pie" "cuddle muffin" "squishy face" 😆 I'm dying just thinking about it!

My boyfriend(Japanese) said he likes that part of my language (Spanish) because we have many pet-names to call our significant other, and he said he doesn't know any in Japanese. I use Spanish and English words with him and he calls me "amor" (love) in Spanish whenever he calls me, I hate it when he uses my name because here we use the name for official things or when you are in trouble(with your mom).
So I'm Hispanic too and like our culture is a lot about love and showing a lot of emotion, while the Japanese are rather timid, how does it work? Sorry curious question
+SapphieSaurx3 he is very intense with affection and words, sometimes I have to tell him to chill out, he tells me he loves me all the time. We went to Japan this year and he will say he loved me in public places (in Spanish) because no one else understood. But he doesn't show that site (lovely-dovy) of him in front of others. It took him a while to get use to saying hello with a kiss in the lips in public (he might not do this again when we move to Japan next year), holding my hand is ok for him if there are no friends around he will even hug me or kiss me in public(very quick), now he is getting more use to the idea of holding my hand in front of other Latinos(friends) but is somewhat more difficult for him to do it in front of his Japanese friends. He love our culture very much and even wants to learn to dance. I am ok with not showing affection in public, because I have never like that kind of couple who will be extremely attached to each other as if they are about to have sex in public. But I do like to hold hands or say hello with a kiss(quick kiss). I hope he keeps doing that while we live in Japan.

But Just to be called Honey would be great just once.

To me, "love" sounds much sweeter and it seems like "love" is to "babe" what "beautiful" is to "hot". It just seems to have a more sincere and affectionate connotation. And as for some of the more creative pet names I've heard, one of my best friends calls his fiancee "kitten"--which I think is funny because it sounds like something someone would call a lady in an old-timey noir film or something, but it works for them.

I'm from Spain and I was living in Netherlands for three months, working in a company full of poles, romanians, portuguese people and more. So i called my boyfriend "Cariño", that means "darling" , while working and poles were so confused. In that moment i learnt that in spain we have a lot of pet names that we consider "normal" but in other countrys is weird to call your partner with a pet name. So here i'm going to put a list of spanish pet names and translations.
Cariño - Means darling
Mi amor- my love. You can just say "amor" that is love.
Cielo- Literally is sky, but is like "baby"
Mi vida- My life.
Cosita- Thing but like cute and tiny
Bichito- The same but with bugs.
Mi chica/ Mi chico- My girl/My boy. Now i realize that spanish people are so possesive.
Bomboncito- Tiny chocolate.
Querido/Querida- Darling. Different gender. A is for girl, O for boy.
Peluchito- Teddy bear.
Gordo- You are calling him fat, but admit it, fat are fluffy cute.
Princesa- Princess. How cute. More usually used for dads to daughters.
Reina- Queen. Ok i used this for my cat.
In summary, Spanish people are weird.
Can confirm having lived with a Spanish mother that this is true. I have heard mum call my dad carino and Amor. She also calls me Reina.

My mom and grandma call me MeguTan as a nickname and my mom was told she doesn't say, "I love you" a lot to her husband. She said Americans say it like breathing (all the time) but when she says it, she's really feeling it fully from her heart so it has more meaning to her. I thought that was cute. My Japanese family seems to concentrate on showing love vs speaking love. Lots of thoughtful and respectful things done for one another. I love seeing the different forms and expressions of love from both sides of the family.
I think showing love is slightly better bc if its only talking with no action I can't be sure if what they say its really true. In showing love even though you don't hear "I love you" at least you know they care for you which for me is more important then saying "I love you".

This reminds me of my Japanese friend who asked me why I say "Love you" to my family, friends, and husband every time we talk on the phone or leaving. I guess it's just a casual reminder that that person is important to me. I feel like love should be expressed more often, heh!

This is one of the things that have always fascinated me about japanese culture and people. Because all sort of emotional displays are very subdued and if you blink you'll miss them, but somehow when I was staying in Tokyo for a couple of weeks I NEVER felt like people were being cold or distant. It's a strange kind of balance, because there is very little expression of genuine emotion, but yet somehow (to me at least) japanese people don't come off as cold or stand-offish. I found japanese people to be very polite and warm and always willing to help someone who obviously is not from Japan (I am blonde with blue eyes). Everyone I met was also very curious about my scandinavian culture and wanted to know more about where I came from, as well as very willing to indulge my interest and curiosity about their culture. All in all I think it's just western misunderstanding to label japanese people as cold and distant. They just have a different way of being nice, that doesn't require hugs and kisses and hundreds of pet names ;)
They show love by doing nice things for you. At least that was his my Japanese son in law did it. Now he says "I love you, Mom". I love it!
Jun isn't the only one who uses terms of endearment when he's upset- my boyfriend started out doing the same thing, and he only recently started to use them normally. It was really funny. Of course, my boyfriend isn't culturally different from me, he's just shy about things, haha.

I'm hispanic america and this is always so difficult for me. Its the TOTAL opposite to spanish,there are like millions of terms of enderment,its engrained in the culture. The terms are very very intense like "mi vida" literally meaning "my life" or "mi cielo" literally meaning "my heaven". but i get it they express love in other ways.(ㆀ˘･з･˘) but its hard for me lol

Also, I have a question! Jun has always said that, "I love you" is the sort of thing you would say with your last dying breath -- not something you just say all the time like we do in America. I am interested to know how Japanese people handle THIS situation: In America, a big turning point in a relationship is the moment where the person says, "I love you" for the very first time. They have probably been dating for a few months and the feelings of "like" have become deeper, and turned into feelings of "love". In Japan, is there a moment in a relationship where you would outwardly state that you love the person, and you are interested in becoming more serious? How do Japanese people handing that turning point in a relationship?

+ultimatekai I think Japanese people when they start a relationship, they tend to be quite explicit. I think in that case, they might start the relationship at a later stage, but I'm totally willing to be corrected on this.
+ultimatekai Honestly, its pretty much the same as anywhere else, it depends on the person. But I will say if we were going with the general idea, then for us (well, mostly my own experiences) it's less of one single moment but rather over time, we gradually become more and more open about it. The "i love you" moment in Japan, if there were to be one, it would actually probably be when we first start dating. Kind of like in anime I guess would be the best explanation XD. as for actually saying "I love you" since that was also technically part of the question, would probably be either late into the relationship, or in marriage. What people in Western cultures wwould say during a strong relationship is obviously "i love you", but in Japan a better translation would be "I like you (kimi no koto ga suki") suki meaning like. while "kimi no koto o aishiteiru" where aishiteiru means love is used moreso when dealing with marriage. As for outwardly expressing affection..............that's very uhm, not done in Japan, it's mostly just understood that "hey, this person likes/loves me" and nothing else. For example, alot of couples wont even hold hands in public here in Japan, obviously this has changed in recent years to where more and more of them are, but still not alot. My husband is Japanese guy but he wanted me to call him darling when we were dating. Until now I still call him darling. Also he says I love you everyday. Maybe not same with any other Japanese do.
It could also depend on the prefecture. I have some friends that say, 「まじで」 a lot and another friend that told me when I go to Japan, I should not say, 「まじで」 because that's really immature. She said I should use, 「本当」 instead.
This same friend also told me that using トイリ is too immature and I should use, "hand washing room."
I have a friend from a different area that said you can say any swear word on t.v., including the F-word, and it won't be censored.
In french we have "chéri" (deer, darling), for us adding a possessive determinant in front of someones title make it more personal, more respectful and more affectionate (unless the title itself has a strong negative connotation), "cocotte"(my little hen, kept woman, my protégée, b-tch), trésor (treasure), "petit" (little one). And in Russian, we have even more endearment terms that often refer to small, cute, huggable animals or very precious things like the sun, gold, treasure and so on.

What Jun was saying that, for Asian culture we generally don't express love that often in comparison to American, such as by saying, "I love you", because if you say "I love you" on a daily basis, then those words become numb and less meaningful.
Our culture is very strict and we were raised to be cold in a way that's tough love. How we express our love or even for married couples is by saying something, "Did you eat anything yet?" or "Are you hungry?". The love is there; it's just not as direct and engaging compare to how you were raised, Rachel. A lot of these things are just to be expected and shouldn't have to be said to indicate that you love a person. It's already a given, and you can see it through your partner's actions. That's the differences.
dy/dx I can’t say I disagree with you. I’ve thought that “I love you” is overused in America way too many times. But despite this, I have this habit I started after attending a funeral as a kid, it was the first time I realized anyone I love could die at any moment due to a random accident I have no control over and I decided that the last thing I say to anyone I love as they leave will always be “I love you” because if I lose them that day I want them to know that.
It depends on the family in the USA. My husband's family was very affectionate while mine was not. I know they love me but it feels really uncomfortable and embarrassing to hear them say it and hugs are gross. My husband has softened me up quite a bit. I am much more comfortable with casual affection now than when I was growing up.
I agree. We don't really say "I love you" much. It even becomes awkward to say it even to family members
this might sound really f-ed up, but I think the reason a lot of americans/western people say "I love you" so often is because any day could be our last. If I died right after getting off the phone with someone, I would have wanted to say "I love you" when I finished the call...
maybe that's why it/s so common to say "I love you" when getting off the phone here.

Not just Americans, im from Turkey I do it too. Guess it depends on your level of awareness/anxiety on how shitty life can be.
I would never forgive myself if someone in my family died and I had not told them that I loved them the last time we'd spoken.
