  • Today we take a look at a variety of new watch releases, including a world exclusive premiere. In this video, I respond to your comments and nominations for watch brands you believe are guilty of the all too familiar cash grab, and analyze when a watch is merely a moneymaker or a future classic. I also explore how brands can do better, and discuss examples of when revived brands get it right, and when they get it wrong. Included in this video is the world premiere of the new Bulova Oceanographer GMT, a mini review of the Vulcain Nautique skin diver, the new official Indiana Jones watch-the Boulton from Hamilton-plus a quick look at the Vertex M1000, a watch that was released years ago, but has a surprising and unique history that makes it unlike anything else out on the market. Join me for another fun episode, chockablock with watches, exploring the intersection of horology, movies, social media, technology, and pop culture. What do you think about the watches featured in this video? Please share in the comments!

Regarding Indiana Jones: The Hamilton plays no role in the movie. However there is a watch that does... the Hanhart chrono that the Nazi villain wears. Why is nobody talking about this? Hanhart lacking the marketing power of Swatch??

Someone could argue any watch other than a Casio F91w could be considered a "cash grab". Or indeed anything in life where form takes precedence over function. I'm just glad there are so many watches out there to fit the many differing opinions. As always sir great video.

I never heard of Vulcain before but man, that's a classy piece! Mr Laidet really knows how to make very accurate vintage reissues. And about the Apple/smart Watch, I've tried out an Apple Watch myself for about 14 days and I totally get why people love them. But it looks a bit childish when you are more formally dressed. I would love to go back to the good old Nokia times... Excellent video TGV! Have a great weekend!🙌🏻🔥

Nivada and Vulcain are amazing watches. I really really like the Vulcain Diver but I wish they had the black dial with white lume. I don’t know why but yellowed lume makes me think I’m not wearing a tool watch but an old watch. And that Vulcain diver really looks like the kind of watch I’d use as my daily beater watch ❤

    - The Boulton in the movie appears in two scenes: one when Indy explains that it used to belong to his father (aka Henry Jones Sr as played by Sean Connery), and one where it’s at Indy’s bedside table
    - It’s a quartz, but since there are no scenes where we see it ticking, it doesn’t matter. Quartz means the propmasters don’t have to spend too much time looking after it for Harrison Ford as well as his stunt doubles.
    - Most people would say it’s overpriced, but I got mine at a Boxing Week sale, and I have to say it’s one of the most comfortable dress watches I own.

I love the Bulova Devil Divers in the Archive series (the non-GMTs). I think if I do get one it'll be that one, though the GMT here is pretty compelling! I have gone back and forth with the orange dial, but I keep coming back to the idea that I really will only want one orange dial and that is a Doxa (whether that brand's resuscitation is a cash grab or not).

The quartz Hamilton isn't inaccurate. The film’s present-day is 1969. And even though I'm not a fan of quartz watches. But out of all things Indy wears that Hamilton would be what I would buy. For two reasons, one (and the biggest for me) is it's understated. And it's something you can wear with just about anything. As opposed to a bomber jacket or a pair of Alden’s. The other reason is I need a dress watch in my collection.

Personally, I am more forgiving of those smaller and newer brands, like the revivalist, than I am of the big brands pumping out new dial colours, changing a strap, changing a dial size by a couple of mm's etc. The integrated bracelet has been one of the most recent cash grabs for me.

Omg, you're wearing the watch I inherited from my dad (in silver and with 6 o'clock seconds)... He got it for his communion and wore it for about 20 years before dropping it in a drawer in miserable shape. I had it repaired and serviced by Omega in Switzerland... for almost a grand! They had to replace half the movement, the crystal, the strap... got the broken parts in a little bag. It now runs at +2s/day but it's not waterproof anymore and... I almost never wear it, too scared to damage it. Yeah... The bumper movement is one of a kind though, really cool. It's alive!

It’s now a shock to see a diver or any sort of chronograph, sports watch or dress watch even Gshocks and other Casios are rare on wrists in the street. For the regular folks in the street it’s all smartwatches now for men and women!

Got lost in the beginning of where this video was going but towards the end I got it. The reviews on the lesser-known brands who tastefully pay homage to classic designs of the past ... nailed it. Nivada Grenchen, Bulova, Vulcain, Hamilton, Squale, Vertex and I would add Yema, are all brands that do this well without the hype. Also I think the German, Black Forest, brands could be added like Stowa, Laco, hanhart and Junghans. I would like to throw in Seiko but at times I feel they're so guilty of "cash grab" .

I hear they have the following that may buy multiples at a time due to the unique nature of each watch in a product line. I think Nomos is also making waves and blazing the way with their movements. Can't wait to get one since I am such a movement junkie. I'd rather spend 1500-5000 on a watch from one of the aforementioned brands than a Tudor or the like. That's just me though. Compared to smartwatches, luxury watches might have heritage and "last a lifetime", but cost a fortune to buy and maintain.
Garmin watches, for example, have so many useful functions for outdoor and sporting activities, look great and can be had for a couple hundred bucks.
As for surveillance, it's much easier to disable tracking on a smartwatch than an android or iphone. Plus they can let you leave your phone at home during workouts.
I agree though that apple watches look ghastly! 😅

"You vote with your time and your money." Though, as always, the content is so rich and thought provoking, that one line is a big takeaway for me. My watchmaker is a small storefront run by an aging Germán couple. They are amazing and the wife humbles me with her watch and horology knowledge. I just recently bought a watch bracelet. I bought from Long Island. Amazon does not share my love and passion and I suspect the authenticity of a small business drives that. Where you buy matters as much as what you buy and integrity from journalistic sources and content creators matters a great deal. Thank you for a great closing sentence.

The Boulton was very popular way back in the 40s and 50s, and this new one has the looks, BUT, for the price, it really should have a hand-wind movement like the original.

I just bought a certina chronometer chronograph quartz, ds diver 300 meters water resistance for a bargain price of £370. Accurate 10+ to -10 seconds a year. Looks wonderful on my wrist. What more could you want a Swiss Made from a company with heritage. I have mechanical wachtes as well. A bargain in my book I would rather wear that than a Rolex where I could lose my life for in the area of London I live in. About 5 years ago, a man lost his life being stabbed for his Rolex in Greenwich.

Great video don’t kick me off but it would be interesting for you to do a video about the “smart watch” as look at it from a historical perspective it seems similar to people moving from pocket watches to wrist watches the phone is something you keep in your pocket and get out to use and they start big and got smaller to now you wear them on your wrist there is a lot of parallels to both

    Hi TGV!
I wish Hamilton would have brought the watch with a mechanical movement. They have proven that they are able to produce mechanical icons for less than $800.
Talking about smartwatches, especially the Apple Watch. I have worn my Apple Watches (I upgraded from a Series 1 to Series 8 after six years) for over 1,000 days in a row now. Mostly doing the “Schwarzkopf” with a real watch on my left wrist and the Apple Watch on the right. The gamification with the three circles helped me to do more. Walking more, do a 3-5 kilometre run every morning, taking the stairways instead of the elevator. That’s nice to have. But if you have issues with your heart and other health problems, the Apple Watch is your little helper on your wrist. It reminds me to take my medicine, it constantly taking my heart rate and could even do a simple ECG. The Apple Watch 8 has got one of the best sleep trackers. It monitors my breathing rate during the night, my VO2max and my heart rate variability. All this is important to me. And therefore it’s not the first time I decided to wear the Apple Watch as the only device when I don’t want to do the “Schwarzkopf”. And I’m saying this as a watch enthusiast!
    Best regards,
    Claus

The one thing about that Boulton.... The equally priced regular mechanical version has a sapphire crystal. So why oh why did Hamilton jump the shark with a mineral crystal?
Speaking of lacklustre, I have a recussitated Excelsior Park. Beautiful. Love it to bits. Guillaume Llaidet is also involved with those guys. That said, if you actually call Nivada or Vulcain service number (never mind why I did), they will tell you Guillaume doesn't own the brand, he merely consults, according to those folks.
In the meantime, the domain names for all these brands are registered through a privacy minded registrar out of California, so ownership is tricky to track down.
That all said: Nivada, Vulcain, Excelsior Park are all splendidly executed.
