  • He might not have been Hawkeye's first buddy at the 4077th, but he certainly made a lasting impression!

I feel like this was the same thing, the first three seasons of the show generally felt like tomfoolery, with the CO of the camp not really caring about rules and regulations along with Trapper and Hawkeye both throwing it all to the wayside. When Potter and BJ came on it felt like those characters were really their own characters, Potter understanding where Hawkeye was coming from but still needing to oblige by Army rules and regulations, BJ felt exactly like a how you describe it. A big brother as opposed to Trapper that really just felt like a carbon copy of Hawkeye almost.

I've always thought that Trapper John was funnier, and B.J. got all the thoughtful parts. But I'm not sure just which I prefer. Trapper too often was just another version of Hawkeye, even though as a married man his situation was very different. His character was in my opinion never really fleshed out (possibly due to his early exit) so we never got to see just what the street kid turned doctor could have become. B.J. on the other hand was almost too developed, with his role in relation to Hawkeye much more clearly defined. And the moral dilemmas he faced, oh my. He wasn't quite the roll with the punches type that Trapper was (though it would have been interesting to see how Trap would have handled some of the things B.J. did). The two characters were made for different eras of the show, the more satirical vs. the more morality play. It's almost like comparing apples to oranges.

@2RAW4SPORTS Some thought Tom Dewey's mustache hurt his presidential campaigns in the 40s. He offered to shave it off. But his wife liked it. The last President we had with facial hair was William Howard Taft, elected in 1908. Mike Ferrell did get rid of the mustache after the series ended.

Still say that mustache is way too 70s for this show. But then we ALL know MASH isn't REALLY about the Korean War, don't we?
I always preferred BJ over Trapper. BJ was always the quiet soul just accepting what life threw at him, and then he could just pull a smart comment off without looking as if he was trying for it. And he was just as good at getting the best of people as Hawkeye was. I really loved the episode where he bet that he could pull a practical joke on everyone, but in the end, it was Hawkeye who REALLY got hit.

Hunnicutt was a "wimp"--everything revolved around his wife and kid--"Peg and Erin this and Peg and Erin that"--they even did an episode where they discussed his kid's potty training no less--no Trapper was far better-more humorous and believable--not this all self righteous B.J. baloney

B.J. survived because he could live in two different places; the 4077th, _and_ back home with his family at the same time.
And, that was a _good_ thing. Just ask the other soldiers there.
Remember when Houlohan shouted at him "The only reason you've got more to lose, is because you've _got_ more!"
And Hawkeye said "I don't think I can expand on that".

@@bufnyfan1 And, remember the scene at 1:26?
I bet you forgot all about Hawkeye and Trapper doing the same thing, once.
You forgot because those two _agreed_ and there was no conflict nor deeper examining of the issue.
Trapper and Hawkeye were so much alike that either of them could move the plot along in the same ways.
      B.J. was very different. ⭐
And, because he was so even tempered, you didn't see when surprises did come out of him.
A Suburban Californian riding around on a motorcycle, in the 1950's???
      Why would believe that? 😄

    • @TheNoiseySpectator
      @TheNoiseySpectator Před 2 lety +2

@Kali Actually, no. MASH was partly about the Korean war, but mostly it was about these characters, and how such people lived in and dealt with being deployed during _those kinds of_ wars.

First Wayne Rogers then Mike Farrell, they always picked the worst actors to play sidekick. I mean good for the overall cast but both men were WAY too good looking to be playing second fiddle with limited screen time, of course unless they're tip toeing never too far behind Hawkeye.

I think BJ was weakest character in the show. Mike Farrell was not a good actor and was rarely given good sceens because of it. His self rightous attitude that he had in real life always showed. I watch the reruns almost daily because of the great acting and scripts. The show got better with age even though it was far from a realistic depiction of the military life. The haircuts drove me crazy as they did in most military themed shows at the time, even today.
