    Also, on the topic of whether it's worse to be scared of mayo than spiders, it depends. I see more random mayo on day to day basis than I see spiders. But then if you're chilling at home and you know you didn't buy any mayo, a jar of it isn't suddenly gonna appear in the corner of the room.

    Really appreciated this episode, i was diagnosed with agoraphobia late 2019/early 2020, It changed everything for me, i had a fear of public transport, going outside, stepping into shops, seeing friends and it was awful! Luckily i was medicated and after about a year of constant therapy and some really patient friends i got back on my feet, now i can take buses alone, i see my friends and im even working again! my biggest fear/obstacle i still face to this day isnt the fear of being outside its the lack of safe space in social settings, my brain is like "well what if you have a panic attack on the bus and you cant get off" ANYWAY enough rambling just wanted to give a little insight ha, really interesting episode and i love how you guys inform people in a non patronising way thats still informative :)

    hey, as a psychologist, I have to clarify this: the DSM is created by the American Psychiatrists Association (APA, which is not the same than the American Psychologists Association, also called APA, which is a very bad name to use bc the American Pediatric Association also exists.... and the American Psychoanalysts Association, but that's a tottaly different beast) , so no psychologists involved there. In fact, many of the psychologists who do science based psychology criticize the DSM bc it pathologizes many aspects of the human experience based on somewhat questionable (very lousy, tbh) empirical data.

    I think I have a phobia of alcohol? Like, not just a fear of drinking myself, but a fear of other people drinking. (Or maybe it's not a phobia, maybe it's completely logical to be scared sh*tless)

  • @itbechelsea

    I had emetophobia (extreme fear of vomit/vomiting) from early childhood into high school, which made me a bit if a germaphobe too. I’d avoid foods or behaviors that could likely cause food poisoning (undercooked foods) or induce vomiting (drinking, rollercoasters, running). If I found out someone near me was sick, I was overcome by a sense of doom that lasted for days until I was sure I was in the clear and wouldn’t also fall ill. Also couldn’t listen to vomit sounds.
    I started having random panic attacks when I was 8 and over time developed mild agoraphobia (mild because I wasn’t one of those people that literally couldn’t leave their home for years on end). I could do things like go to the grocery store with my mom, but sometimes would still have a panic attack. In high school it got to a point where it was hard to even be in the parking lot of my apartment building.
    Nowadays I don’t think I have genuine phobias. I am afraid of heights, being in tight spaces, and I can’t stand to be around moths and butterflies. I have a weird fear of Google Earth (satellite photos give me vertigo). But I no longer have fears that interfere with my everyday life. But when I did, it really was draining and debilitating.

    • @tinnie75
      @tinnie75 Před rokem +1

      I have almost the same experience with emetophobia. I developed it in early childhood and it has lead to me being a bit of a germaphobe because I worry that if I don't wash my hands all the time, I'll catch a virus that will make me throw up. An when my mom had a stomach virus, I felt sick with anxiety for like two weeks after because I was scared of getting it, even though she was okay after one day of sickness.
      But this phobia kinda comes and goes in waves for me. There is always a certain level of worry but it goes way up if I feel a little sick or was in a situation where I could've been infected.

      @jasperjones3576 Před rokem

      Me too, exact same experience. Honestly it kinda annoys me Emetophobia is classified as a simple phobia because it controlled every inch of my life for several years. I wasn't just afraid of throwing up, I was afraid of existing inside of body that could. Your own body isn't something you can avoid or escape from so then comes the eating disorders, agoraphobia, OCD, and never ending panic attacks. I actually would wish I had a phobia of something simple I could avoid like snakes.

    59:03 I know a teacher who teaches like 4 to 8 year old children, and she has a phobia of spiders. Whenever there's a spider, she'll mask her fear and calmly tell the children to catch it and put it outside. She will probably pass out if she has to do it herself. But she knows it is an irrational fear and she doesn't want to make the children feel scared of spiders. So she just teaches them how to handle spiders and help children over any small fears they may have. She has also done the same with her own children, and I think she's a great example of how one should handle their phobia around children (where possible of course)

    I think Noah asked a question I’d like to answer. I also learned about flooding and exposure therapy in psych 101. Flooding is like you said, an extreme exposure therapy, throwing you into the scary situation all at once. This is generally NOT therapy and NOT effective treatment for an actual phobia. Please don’t take Luke to an amusement park against his will and force him to get on a roller coaster for content! My friends in college thought it was hilarious to threaten throwing rats at my face and the thought of it only traumatized me more. This kind of “therapy” works wonders in TV and movies, like Indiana Jones. Not so much in real life. Actual exposure therapy is boring and doesn’t make good content lol

    You guys are absolutely right about kids learning how to feel about a situation from their parents. My kid doesn't have much of a reaction at all when she gets minor bumps and such because my husband and are have both always just told her she's fine, go on. The neighbour's kid? If he comes to get my kid to play and then stubs his toe on the way back to his house, that's it, game over, we won't see him for an hour because he's gone in to be coddled. Kids also absolutely taylor their responses to the adult, though. Mine knows that I'm not giving in once I say no, no matter how much she begs, cries, throws things, etc., so she doesn't (or gives up quickly.) My husband? He'll give in and she knows it, so she puts on a show.

  • @AnimilesYT

    A fear of heights is standing on a bridge, looking down from behind the railing, and feeling a bit dizzy/scared.
    A phobia of heights is not being able to bring yourself to get close to the railing, so you keep like at least 1m distance. In case of a really bad phobia it may even mean that you are too terrified to even get onto a bridge at all.
    So the difference between a fear and a phobia is the difference between "this thing is scary" and "my fear of this thing will literally incapacitate me if I get too close to confronting said thing"

It's a lot better now but I still often have a sense of dread when I go outside too much.

It was so bad that I would have a panic attack every time i would even see a tiny birthday candle. Somehow it got better when i was 14 and i got myself a lighter to basically exposure therapy myself. Even though I didn't realise that was what i was doing. I'm probably not entirely unafraid of fire now but it atleast got much better so that it doesn't affect my normal life anymore.

    My main two phobias are of insects (most but not all insects but especially spiders) and emetophobia - fear of throwing up. Towards the end of the episode Corry talks about how phobia differs from PTSD in that with phobia you're only really scared when you encounter the trigger, but for me with emetophobia it does affect me day to day to a degree. Like I'll be avoiding anything that could make me sick, whether it's alcohol, food or just being very diligent about washing my hands and washing my food etc. to avoid sickness. But also this phobia is very easily triggered and has you stuck in a loop where feeling slightly nauseous makes you anxious which then makes you more nauseous which makes you more anxious etc.
    I've also had a fear of dogs for most of my life but the severity of it kinda comes and goes. I feel like sometime between the ages of 6-10 I had a couple of bad experiences where I was either being chased by a dog or had a dog jump at me or try to jump at me, which only served to make my fear bigger and bigger because I somehow kept finding myself in these situations. But then over time it mostly went away and now I'm able to be around dogs and not freak out but I still feel anxious when I'm outside and see people with bigger dogs that are running around and barking or trying to jump at people.

    I'm absolutely terrified of the terminator to extent that when they release a new movie I can't watch TV in the evening incase I see the trailer because it will make me cry and shake fear, I also will have nightmares for weeks if I manage to sleep at all.
    This started in year 2000 when I was 6 and went to millennium dome with my family. My mum left me at table to get some food and while she was gone someone in a robot costume was being pushed in a wheelchair, they came over to me and robot jumped out the chair it made jump so high I flew over the table and broken arm. He wasn't in a terminator costume so I'm not sure why my brain has put on the him. I guess I'm lucky it's something I can avoid relatively easily but even if I see it on the TV guide it bring tears to my eyes and makes me feel sick, even typing this has caused a lump on my throat.
    I'm also scared of swans/geese, clowns, roller coasters, moths, heights and spiders which has got better since I started giving them non threatening names.

    Used to have arachnophobia as a kid, specifically towards daddy longlegs, or the Opiliones species of arachnids. I was fine with true spiders and thought they were cool looking, but harvestmen freaked me out. Ironic, considering they're physically incapable of biting humans, and are way more fragile than true spiders.
    I've always had atychiphobia, or an intense fear of failure. A lot of my fears actually stemmed from this, and it would cause me to procrastinate or never even try to do things because I was afraid of being humiliated. There's another irony to go with this, which is that I also have achievemephobia, or fear of success, to the point where I've sabotaged myself whenever I've felt I had an undeserved success in life.
    I developed hemophobia later in life. Getting blood drawn has caused the vasovagal response, where I've gotten very nauseated and blacked out afterwards. This has also happened when watching certain horror movies, like the brain scene from "Hannibal" which I know is supposed to be funny. Even though I know the gore is fake, I have to look away and go lie down to avoid blacking out. This is exceptionally ironic, since I used to get blood drawn routinely with no ill effect, I'm a huge fan of violent video games and the horror genre, and I have a history of SH which is not what you'd expect.
