- 1979 (Shirley Bassey recorded this song and included it on her 1965 LP titled, 'Shirley Bassey Stops The Shows (UK Cover) and 'Shirley Bassey Belts The Best (USA Cover). Here she is in 1979 performing this song on her TV Variety Show. Everyone recognizes this song as one of Barbra Streisand's signature songs, and at the end of this clip there is a 2013 great picture of them together nearly four decades after both recorded this classic song. (It's unfortunate, but WMG Publishing has blocked the view of Shirley's studio recording of this great song worldwide; otherwise, I would have uploaded it because it's great!)
ABOUT this song:
People" is a song that was written by Jule Styne (composer) and Bob Merrill (lyricist) for the Broadway musical Funny Girl (1964) starring Barbra Streisand, who introduced the song. It is often known by a line from its chorus, "People who need people....". It has been recorded by Shirley Bassey, Dionne Warwick, Steve Lawrence, Jack Jones, Aretha Franklin, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, The Supremes and others, but is most closely associated with Streisand as her signature song. The song asserts that "people who need people" - that is, people who love others and are not emotionally cut off from them - are the "luckiest people in the world". It was released as a single with "I Am Woman", a solo version of "You Are Woman, I Am Man", also from "Funny Girl".
Andy Williams released a version of the song on his 1964 album, The Great Songs from "My Fair Lady" and Other Broadway Hits. Ella Fitzgerald recorded the song live on her CBS release Ella Fitzgerald at the Newport Jazz Festival: Live at Carnegie Hall. The Tymes had a top 40 hit with the song in 1968

The song didn't mention toxic people. I believe the song is intended for people who believe in good in every person. People who are brave to say they are cold, hungry or hurting and needing help are lucky to have the humility to admit what other people dread to accept due to pride.. It takes courage to let people see your vulnerable side. And people who help are lucky to be chosen by the powerful being. They are given the opportunity to do good deeds. It is no wonder that people who need help crosses their path with people who are blessed to be given the opportunity to help.
People who need other people to be fulfilled in life may be seen as insecure and clingy.

Shirley Bassey's rendition of People is even better than Barbra Streisand's many performances of that '60s Broadway hit song!
Shirley's Bassey's voice is more powerful, her intonation is richer, her treatment of the lyrics more colorful, while she makes full use of declamatory gestures and varying facial expressions to evoke pictorial images in the lyrics. Her grand finale ending of the song is more dramatic than the way Barbra usually ends her version. This performance is typical Shirley Bassey--magnificent and over-the-top!

i live the song and i won't compare with babs they are both great and should both be celebrated but what the hell babs is the best lol
Making a statement about the 'Best' usually gets down to ones own bias towards one singer over another. And, this preference is usually about pitch and tone, not about vocal abilities. But, to really make that statement you have to really be unbias about it. I am from the US and grew up listing to Barbra Streisand. No one questions that this was a hit by Barbra, but with that said Shirley does a wonderful job with this song with a different arrangement to suit her magnificent vocal abilities. Now, on the other hand, Barbra would not attempt a song like 'Goldfinger' or 'The Living Tree' or tackling the song 'I Will Survive' in her 70's, or be able to deliver the emotional intensity of 'Why Can't I Cry' or 'Excuse Me'. Studio or Live, it makes no difference. To be the best you have to have the ability to sing all types of songs, regardless if they were one of your hits or not. With that said, I personally think both singers are exceptional, because of their wonderful differences in how they each approach songs.

This is because Barbra recorded it for the movie soundtrack, and it was a sentimental moment in the movie where she sang the song. Bassey prefers singing live, where she can just blow the audience away with her amazingly powerful vocals, and this is exactly what she does here. And, that last note, most vocalists only wish they could hit and hold it like Bassey can do...

think there Barbra sings is more dynamic than Shirley, but when talking about power, of course Shirley is better, Shirley's resonance better too, but both of them are legends ... I think Shirley's opponent about powerc is Judy Garland, you can make a comparison. .Sorry my poor english :(
@@ariates5272 - I have seen this video of Barbra singing this song live. Please note that Shirley and Barbra have the same dynamic fidelity for the higher notes. The difference is that the Tigress of Tiger Bay (Shirley Bassey) goes for the bit notes because she feels confidence in hitting them. (ie, the last note!) Barbra sounds like she is hitting higher when she pulls back, but it is simply because she has very slight timber. Shirley has a darker timber, but a recording devise will register the same note pitch. I think they are both great artists, and so it gets down to ones personal favorite. With overall abilities, especially singing live, if you haven't guessed, my personal favorite is Ms. Bassey.

Great voice, great interpretation! You obviously have that other artist's version in mind. But, what a boring world it would be if everyone sang songs exactly the same way. And, once someone sings a song that becomes well known, then everyone else who covers it must sing it exactly the same way. Shirley has the pipes to sing songs any way she wants, and she does.
