Spindle Spotlight #15 - Russian and Phang Style Spindles

- In this Spindle Spotlight I am featuring two more styles that are turned from one piece of wood. Quick clarification: I refer to speed throughout the video and after reviewing the video, I think duration of spin is the better term. These spindles are unique because even though the style/shape is pretty consistent among makers, the speed and duration of spin will vary . Because of this, this style allows the spinner the opportunity to better control the amount of twist in the single. These are also older/traditional styles commonly used to create fine yarn for intricate lace shawls.

Spindle Style Pros:
many makers/design variety/lengths
good for lace weight
one piece design
Spindle Style Cons:
weights vary by maker
slow spin time
don't hold a lot of fiber
not great for plying
some fiber varieties more difficult to spin than others

Another informative video! I had no idea that these types of spindles were "related". Your videos inspired me to try supported spinning for the first time. I was intimidated but nothing disastrous happened! I'd love to see a spotlight on the Goddess spindle or one of the Phang style spindles!
Thank you for your spindle videos. I do enjoy them very much. I personally don't find my Russian spindles slow. They spin very fast but not for a long time.
You're absolutely right! I'll update and note that in the description. This was a hard video, and I'm realizing I should have done a separate phang spotlight. I might still.

What happens to the yarn if you over twist on the spindles any spindle? Thank You for sharing
Ohhh my gosh! This is such a GREAT question! Thank you for asking it! Spinning is really just building energy and then releasing the energy. So if you notice over spun bits before you wind on, you can actually move the energy around and reduce over twist. This is such a great question, I think I'll talk about it specifically in my next spotlight!
