  • 700,000 people evacuated! Wind 240 km/h, Cyclone Beryl hits the Caribbean region!
Hurricane Beryl has several territories in the Caribbean region on alert due to its powerful and fast activity.
Now in the highest category on the scale, with winds of 250 kilometers per hour, this hurricane has put local populations at great risk.
Countries such as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic have issued tropical storm warnings.
Beryl's arrival is unusually early in the annual Atlantic hurricane season, which experts say is partly due to climate change.
The NHC has warned that "this is an extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation."
Residents of Grenada, the Grenadines, and Carriacou Island are urged to protect their lives and take immediate measures.
On Monday afternoon, Grenada's Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell announced that Beryl had struck the country, causing major damage to the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
The eye of the Category 4 hurricane made landfall with winds of 240 kilometers per hour (150 mph), leaving a trail of destruction.
By Monday, July 1, Beryl had been upgraded to Category 5 on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale.
The NHC reported that hurricane winds extended up to 40 miles (64 km) from the center, with tropical storm-force winds reaching 125 miles (201 km) further.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic changed their tropical storm watches to tropical storm warnings.
A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the monitoring area within 48 hours.
A tropical storm warning indicates that tropical storm conditions are expected within the monitoring area within 36 hours.
The NHC expects Beryl to remain a powerful hurricane as it moves through the Caribbean Sea throughout the week.
Jamaica is now under a hurricane watch, with hurricane conditions possible by Wednesday.
Other areas of the Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands, Belize, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, should closely monitor the hurricane's development.
Watches and warnings are likely to be required in these regions in the coming days.
If Beryl maintains its current course, it could make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane on Thursday or Friday.
Beryl’s early appearance and fierce strength highlight the growing unpredictability of hurricane seasons.
Local governments are providing shelters and emergency services to those in need.
Relief efforts are being organized to support affected communities.
International aid is being mobilized to assist with recovery efforts.
Stay safe, stay informed, and support efforts to combat these devastating effects.
