This song hit me in the feels before I even listened to the lyrics. Then, I read the lyrics and listened again. Well, to say I almost cried is an understatement. As a combat vet too this hits really close to home.

I always thought the soldiers who are scarred from the wars are as much victims as the non-combatants whose home are ravaged by the wars. And I will have no respect for any countries who wage war just to further their own selfish agenda.
But still, I hope the future will be kinder to you.

@@Vandalgia fuck no man. The non-combatants that have to deal with my aftermath, I don't hold a candle to what I've done.
Song hits too fucking hard. I'd easily give myself to bring peace to those I've harmed, those who will never see their child/father/uncle/cousin.
Nobody fucking wins in war. Just god damn losers, it just takes the sides that kicks ass longer to realize it... but it's there. The 12 guys in my platoon who took their own lives after we got home can vouch.
It never fucking ends... it goes from physical to mental, and the mental NEVER fucking heals.... just VERY god damn slowly gets better. I still fucking hate myself.

I like to think this video is a portrayal of an old, worn universe ("God") watching it's creation and wondering and longing for what it must be like to be human. 1:02 you see palace like funishings adorned in gold representing heavenly splender while "God" is disabled in a wheel chair unable to do anything to help. 5:48 the lights above his head showing him to be amongst the stars. The whole time throughout every emotion shared equally as the humans experience them showing omnipresence... This all comes round full cicle to the message of the song being about the atrocities of war and the long lasting consequences for the ones who participate... The echoes of the young one's screams reaching out into eternity and the immense pain the universe must also be feeling experiencing it.

I keep coming back to this song year after year and it never fails to make me cry uncontrollably at the same moment, when he sees her through the screen as she’s looking back into the mirror. He’s so proud of her and I don’t even have the words for how hopeless it feels.
He’s so gone, so sufficiently tortured that his life there almost make his purgatory feel cozy. You know his life ended long before but for him it’s all the same. He’s relived those memories over and over, slowly replacing himself. The pride he has for her isn’t his. Hes twisted that guilt into real moments of relief and escape by crafting memories for them that he can be proud of when that’s really just an addiction now. He can’t be proud of her, and they will never have a chance to experience those mundane moments that he’s desperately clinging to now, feeling whatever emotion he can by deluding himself that it’s them.
It’s so tragic, but that moment also makes me so angry. She’s not growing through puberty, she never will. The look of pride is so palpable and so sickening from the man who killed her that it’s disgusting. How dare he use them to escape his guilt. Yet he’s not a villain either. We know his life ended then too. It’s that look, that’s when you know everything is just a self soothing cycle. Nobody is redeemed, no one will have a happy ending or be able to heal. The fact his delusions are so strong makes it even sadder. Guilt replaced that man a long time ago. I’ve hated myself for ways I’ve hurt people, and I can begin to understand that feeling, the way that guilt twists from something real felt for how you hurt them, into a self soothing self loathing. Selfishly feeling bad because of how you were tormented by what you did. It hurts man, it becomes the reason for who you are and the reason you hate yourself, trapped by tides we can’t be untouched by. I can’t imagine killing a child, or the guilt I would feel, but I can certainly understand why he had to kill himself off and become a body for the family. Consistently and easily one of the most impactful artists in my life for how they can tell a story that impacts me so deeply, through something I could never relate to or begin to understand

I think the guy used to be the woman's boyfriend/husband and he died. Now he's watching his wife with her new partner on the monitors (symbolising him watching down from heaven). That's why he's happy when she's smiling and sad when she's getting abused. Just my interpretation

    • @Vaeland
      @Vaeland Před rokem +3

I’d suggest both are a bit off because of why song was written. It’s a very literal song lyric wise, written about a combat veteran experiencing ptsd, and very metaphorical visually. He’s trapped by guilt of killing a child overseas and ending the chance the family had of ever experiencing the memories he’s watching. He’s creating the memories like an addiction, to feel something else other than guilt, and he’s let go of his own life because of this long ago. He plays them on repeat as a way to atone, he lost his life when the girl died aswell. Now he’s trying to give them what they would deserve, but it’s twisted because he’s stepping in their shoes and trying to experience something that will take that guilt away. It’s actually very sad, and somewhat sickening, to see someone who made a mistake that twisted him to be so far gone that we see the killer, watching the victim, with the pride and love of a father. It would almost appear comfortable in his purgatory, if it wasn’t apparent that he’s not living his own life, he replaced himself trying to give them back what he took away

And on tides we can’t be untouched by
Of troubles stay when lids lay over eyes
The frames and faces I’ve mistaken
For kids whose lives I may have taken
And if so, do I haunt their parents dreams?
And in so, am I summarized by sounds of young lung screams?
    Their young one’s screams
And of war bonds and blood stained hands
Combat neurosis shys from indica strands
And it breaks my mother’s heart to know I came back broken
With the thought of my arms spilt open
And if so, would bring their parent’s peace?
And if so, could I give back the sounds of their children’s screams?
Let go of what I’ve seen
And if so, do I haunt their parents dreams?
And in so, am I summarized by sounds of young lung screams?

I think the man watching the TV is a vet dealing with PTSD and guilt for killing some parent's kids in combat. The family in the TV are the parents of those kids and he is imagining what their life was like before and after their kids death ("Do I haunt their parents dreams?"). All he wants is to bring their parents peace ("And if so would I bring their parents peace? Bring back their children's screams"). What a punch in the gut... especially as a parent. Very sad.

So the band said that they made this in honor of one of the members service . And that it represents ptsd and mental issues of that nature. The rest is for interpretation…..
So my gathering of this video- is that the man in the wheelchair is obviously the combat vet. I believe the woman was his wife, and he had to leave her due to his mental issues upon returning to “normal life” and he never could adjust back after the things that happened . He came back broken, if you will. There’s evidence of this because he is fond of the woman. He smiles when she does, and gets upset when she’s upset. I believe the daughter is his. And the wife thinks about him even though she’s happy in the other marriage. (The kitchen scene) the daughter reminds her of him, and she still grieves him.
And the combat vet is watching them through screens, not truly but metaphorically. Anyone that’s ever had a mentally tough time knows that it feels like we watch “normal” people and “normal” families through a screen.

Alfie Crane indica is a type of weed, there's three types: indica (relaxes a persons, helps with pain and sleep, and for those who have ptsd), sativa (makes someone energetic, and ready to do stuff) and hybrids (mix between two different strains. Which can either be indica or sativa) I'm not sure of the story of the song though.

Vital From what I got out of the video, she was looking herself in the mirror because she didn't recognize who she was anymore. Once she "snapped" out of it she poofed her hair out and started smiling once again. So he smiled as well because he realize that something was wrong previously from just observing and now everything seems better from his point of view. Just the way I interpreted that part.

      @WoahThatIsJesus Před 7 lety +8

Melissa Ellis this is what I get out of it. This song is about experiences at war and feeling guilty about what happened there, and the video is about what appears to be a middle eastern or Muslim family, and how happy they are. The man watching is possibly a former soldier, watching to get a look into how happy they are and how normal their life is. With this, there are parts that confuse the fuck out of me, like the dancing part, so I have no clue there.

A man who comes back from war unable to forget the things he's seen and done. Wondering if suicide would 'make things right'. Self-medicating with Indica to quiet the thoughts in his head.
I remember reading an interview with Josh ; he was a combat vet from Afghanistan and came back feeling suicidal. It was the hope from Conor of forming a band that kept him from killing himself and gave him purpose after leaving the military. I wish I could find the article, cause I probably got something wrong. Anyway, I think it's a reflection of his personal experiences dealing with that, which is why it's so powerful

Man this video has me confused, but I think the guy is in the family's house. the bed and the lamp look the same.

Jesus Alot of people are saying he's a stalker but that doesn't fit I'm with you on this one. like maybe he's in the house they once lived in. idk the lyrics suggest themes of war so it's pretty hard to decipher

scottishfrogstudios I feel man, the video threw me so off guard compared to what the song seemed to be about. But yah I do feel like there's more than him being a stalker.

Jesus I think the guy used to be the woman's boyfriend/husband and he died. Now he's watching his wife with her new partner on the monitors (symbolising him watching down from heaven). That's why he's happy when she's smiling and sad when she's getting abused. Just my interpretation

Yeah because this is about a fucking combat vet whose watching the life he can’t live because he’s traumatized mentally and possibly physically fucked up lol
