An Architect’s Own Home Designed as an Experiential Tree House by the Ocean (House Tour)

  • Tree House by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects is a light-filled family home near Bronte Beach in Sydney. As the architect’s own home, the project exemplifies the studio’s experiential design approach, which sees light, form and materiality coalesce to create an experience of place. The architecture and interiors evoke mood and respond to the changes in light over the course of the day, while the elevated position within the treetops that gives Tree House its name creates a calming atmosphere.
With the living space located at the top floor of the architect’s own home, a journey is created through the architecture via a sculptural staircase. The sculptural forms created by the spiral staircase are balanced by the more pared back interiors, which take their cues from the natural setting. Pale timber, concrete and terracotta tiles, along with the careful approach to both natural and artificial light, reflect the design’s connection to the garden that surrounds it and the nearby beach.
This use of few materials detailed to create a highly refined architectural response is characteristic of an architect’s own home. It highlights how Madeleine Blanchfield Architects has created an experiential home in which simple elements such as materials, details, and changes in light can enhance the mood of a space, resulting in a family home whose architecture, interiors and garden work together to create a sense of lightness and calm.

cold and industrial is a valid aesthetic choice for those who prefer it. it seems a bit backhanded to compliment one aesthetic at the expense of the other.

Late reply, but I’ll just answer your question. It is probably the warm lighting and what surrounds it, light always bounce on a surface or can be absorbed; in this case the warm tone of the wood and a white paint with warm tint, it really reflects the light and bounce around the room and that’s why it feels warm (or maybe it could be just the video filter 😂)

Beauty has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. When I watch videos about tiny houses, I often cry. Not so much from the beauty of the house, but because the owners have taken total control of their lives, pared down, and are happier than they've ever been. I'm saddled with 4,000 square feet of Queen Anne, and a yard that needs daily attention, and would love to sell it all and start again somewhere... A friend just up and moved out to the Northwest. Hoping that she'll be my inspiration.

This house is-- DIVINE! Spare without feeling sterile. The lighting is perfectly thought out. It must be a total experience to be there at night. Too bad it's only 3 feet from the neighbors, tho, and that the neighbors up the hill can watch you in your backyard. City living I guess. This is the first house shown on this channel that resonates with me the most. They maximize the space of the house, there's a library, a lawn, a balcony, simple and not too much of a too much material and good plays of all the material. Things that are commonly used to build a house is found in the major view of the house like wood and things that are not common like you don't see grey concrete on the wall everywhere on the house like in some houses. This house has a bit of everything in the best way possible.

So many commissions focus on making a statement about the owner or his/her tastes. But, people change--and, what was once a certainty becomes stale and confining. Ms. Blanchfield helps me realize here that design's higher calling may be to help the owner humanely reconnect with what's timeless, and help de-emphasize ego without becoming completely anonymous or sterile.

This has much became a therapy video for me more than it being a perfect combination of thoughtful production and experiential house tour. Inspiring!
