Cicada Cicada being a hit with both etymologists and entomologists was a genius joke, coming up with this on the spot is incredible.
I loved that entire thing, not only the wit, but the fact that it was a whole in-joke that had the entire audience going "Huh? WTF is this about?" 🤣
I like Nathan too but I think most of his jokes were pre-planned, like the whole "writing his memoir bit". Not that it wasn't entertaining.
@@_marzipan_ Someone compared him to a stand up and that's not an unfair comparison. He and Martin Short have a similar style only I think Martin comes out and takes over the stage and it becomes a kind of roast. Nathan sets up more of a back and forth with the host though it is very much pre-planned as most interviews tend to be. Doesn't take anything away from the skill it takes to make it seem like it's all in the normal flow of conversation and have it all land the way you want it to. Nathan is one of the best.

He knows what he wants to say and how he wants to say it. He is a consummate professional. That he seems to be speaking off the cuff just shows how good he is.

I love that the show has created its own extended universe from 'Corrections'. So things like Cicada/Cicada are brought up with no explanation and you either get it or accept that you're out of the loop and do your best to follow along.
It is great to see that Nathan still has it. Humor, timing, delivery, still top notch

@@patgal2359 1- age. (losing sense of humor, getting too slow, ideas and perspectives change, etc) 2- comedy changes. 3- lack of writers (but he showed he is a natural smart-ass). (ie....Liked Bob Hope movies. as he got older, he was not funny. same with Lucy Ball). 4- some people are good actors and can act funny. He WAS funny. Just a few reasons.

I concur. He is brilliant at improv, which you don’t see a lot of in stage actors. Almost seems a waste to have him always using a script. At the very least have him host an award show.

A talk show host has to be able to make it seem like everything is free flowing, know when to stay out of the way of the guest while at the same time making ad breaks seem as unobtrusive as possible then potentially pick things up after if the guest is staying for a second segment. Nathan just wants to tell stories and entertain. The host is more of a set up for the guest. It seems like a job with a lot of spinning plates that not everyone is capable of doing.

This guy, Nathan Lane, is so good at his craft that it's astounding the ability and level of professionalism he has attained. Lane is conducting an acting school for the audience and the cast if you have never seen him in theatre on the stage. It's that good. Late-night show interviews really don't get any better than this one.

Honestly, if "Cicada, Cicada" follows the usual pace of musicals in development, it should be just about ready by the time the next batch of cicadas emerge.

Love Nathan Lane to pieces, but I do sometimes wish he’d do more of a real interview conversation and less prepared schtick. Ditto for Martin Short, who always fills so much time with one-liners one wonders if he’s secretly too insecure to answer questions that aren’t a prompt to his quips.
I take that production of Cicada/Cicada is timed for the next appearance of the 17-year brood that inspired it.
He has done serious interviews about serious projects like The Nance, which I highly recommend watching. Last time I looked it was on CZcams.
I am surprised Seth and Stephen didn't mention Nathan Lane on Strike Force Five when talking about guests who need very little prompting. He is fantastic every time.

I agree the cicada should have its own musical, right after the strike they need to start for not being paid to sing to the ants while they work. The artists are always underpaid, always denied shelter in winter and that fable makes it look like playing an instrument, singing and dancing were easy. Cicada, cicada can straight things up! 😂
