- Helen Keller's loss of vision and hearing in infancy made comprehension of the outside world next to impossible-or so it seemed. When teacher Anne Sullivan agreed to work with Keller, that world opened up, especially when Keller comprehended the function and purpose of language. Keller and Sullivan appear in this newsreel footage from 1928, in which Sullivan explains and then demonstrates the methodology used to teach Keller language, most elements of which are still used worldwide with students who are deaf-blind. This full-length version is brought to you by the Described and Captioned Media Program (www.dcmp.org) with the permission of the copyright holder, the University of South Carolina Newsreel Library (www.sc.edu/library/newsfilm/). It has been described for the blind and captioned for the deaf. To learn more about description and captioning, visit the following websites: www.dcmp.org/description and www.dcmp.org/captions.
at 2:40 when Mrs. sullivan mispoke, Hellen laughed at her. That is really cool. You can tell they were close friends.
I love seeing Anne Sullivan speaking here.
Anne is the epitome of a teacher ... an unsung hero.
Two of the greatest ladies who ever lived.
This selfless effort brought tears to my eyes. A remarkable teacher never gave up her student and tried every way to teach her, to reach her.
Helen Keller was particularly intelligent to understand what Ann Sullivan tried to teach her... It is great !
Amazing. I grew up knowing the story of Sullivan and Keller but never actually understood how she was able to have that basic understanding to communicate. This is so fascinating.
I find it deeply moving when she smiles and says, "now I am not dumb". I am struck by the double meaning of the word back then, when an inability to speak was perceived as a mental deficiency.
This is truly one of the most mind-boggling things ever.
Miss Sullivan gave her the light
I'm crying.....saw the movie as a kid....but this is awesome
"Helen smiles"
OMG! The hard work of Anne Sullivan was amazing and Helen never give up. Amazing!
Ann sullivan is an epitome of a teacher. I am just ..like got goose bumps to see these two peoople speak!! Woww!! Thank u sooo much!!!
7 lessons!!! The woman must have been an absolute genius.
Greatly inspiring... a must see for all who are beginning to work with students with disabilities.
I am thrilled to hear the voice of Anne Sullivan. And I am glad to realize she had a very beautiful voice. While we often feature Helen Keller herself, her teacher has not been in the same spotlight. Anne Sullivan is the real miracle.
i admire both of them since i was a kid.. they are both truly a "one of a kind". if i will have kids, i will make sure they would be able to know the story of these two AMAZING woman.
Amazing to see and hear these people from 84 years ago. I saw Arthur Penn's movie in the 1970s but this is something else! One is grateful to those who made this film and those who have enabled it to be accessible still. Robert Smith
Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. (Helen Keller)

Helene Keller is a miracle. There are very few people like her around the world and in the history of mankind. This is a very beautiful course of phonetics.
this is wonderful to see it in video! :)
Amazing!
wonderful :)
Great !!
Ann was one of the greatest women.
Love
wow
Oh, of course. I find her case interesting though. This tadoma speech method interesting also. I wonder if Anne felt sick to her stomach at times from what I read sometimes Helen would stick her whole hand down her throat. That is wonderful determination on Anne's part!!
All the gods bless Helen and Anne. Active inspiration for us all!

Truly, the Miracle Worker......
Why was Anne Sullivan referred to as Mrs. Macy?
Her full name was Anne Sullivan Macy. Hope this helps. :-)
Because she had married Mr. Macy
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Sullivan
Anne married, after which she called herself "Anne Sullivan-
Macy".
caitlinjane92 Annie Sullivan Macy married a man named John Macy. She added his last name to her name when they were married. She kept the last name if I remember correctly, even when Annie and John got a divorce.
It was her married name...
Hellen Smiles
