  • Hello everyone. Over the years we have come down to Shikoku Island in Japan, to take part in the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
The Pilgrimage is a journey on foot to 88 Buddhist temples located in all four of the island’s prefectures, and the journey involves traveling along the island in a circular 1200km route.
It is believed that the founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan, the monk Kobo Daishi (774 - 835), created the 1200 km route for the purpose of walking meditation and a source of enlightenment.
On our last two pilgrimages (sorry this was before I started CZcams so no footage) we got as far as temple 27, so for this trip (during an unusually hot September) were going to start at the next temple, which is 28, eventually making our way to 36, which will be the completion point for this leg.

This is a beautiful and informative video. Also my second time to watch it, and I had not noticed before , that I had forgotten to leave a comment. I enjoyed this video more the second time,, You have obviously become very knowledgeable of the culture. Very nice.

I am very impressed with the pilgrimage. I had no idea that there would be so many different and beautiful places to enjoy while you walked along. I can see why you would have liked to linger longer at many of them. That food really looked tasty. A very informative video, and now when you speak of the pilgrimage, I have a much better understanding.

We loved this segment of the wonderful Pilgrimage Trail. We loved seeing the temples along the way and hearing about Buddhist traditions, history and etiquette. Wonderful temple to reflect, meditate and escape the rain too. Despite the construction! 😁😁 Loved the gorgeous gardens and natural sounds of temple 31. Was there an electrical wire on top of the streetcar @17:23 or has it been modernized? It's a shame you we're feeling poorly in the humid heat. Me? I'd throw my back out just making the bed! 🤣🤣 The dragons along the way looked as mild as a kitten. Beautiful video Lyndon and Donna. Thanks so much for bringing us along.

Glad you enjoyed it! We always enjoy coming here as its a great way to explore Japan. The street cars I believe are from around the 50s and 60s and are run by electricity.

Hi L this was so good to watch, though we are Christian and not Buddhist I would still love to walk this pilgrimage trail, it looked so beautiful and peaceful and would be great to see the 88 temples along this trail. Haha loved the dancing praying mantis 😃 This was so interesting and I liked seeing the Japanese room . Shame you weren't feeling too well but I'm sure you still loved the journey 👍~ Anna

Good for you! You survived walking the pilgrimage in the WORST season! I hope to see some spring and fall videos of you walking with cherry blossoms and clouds of autumn leaves. Let me know the next time you come to Shikoku. Perhaps we can walk together for a day.

It was certainly more challenging this year with the hotter than usual weather. We were discussing that for next time we would give the spring season a try, but at this time not sure what year that will be.

Seems like a great experience to do this pilgrimage. Good tips on the protocols. Beautiful and real Japan. Funny, we YT people know the camera eats first.... Surprised at the diversity of trails. Yes interesting inn. Have to be in decent shape to make the mat up. Jizo statutes fascinating. That tree is a great way to get rid of bad omens. Thanks for sharing the adventure in Japan. 👍

It must have been difficult to make Ohenro-san the hot season. I hope you will be successful in visiting all of the temples. I would like to make a pilgrimage someday too.
