- The grease in sized 1000, 2000 and 2500 Compact is too thick. It is also extremely durable and unlikely to fall off. As a result the small sizes have extremely unpleasant (and UNNECESSARY) resistance.
The bigger sizes, while having the same grease, do not appear to suffer from this problem, because the additional leverage from the bigger parts overwhelms the resistance of the grease.
Daiwa needs to change the grease for the smaller sizes in the factory! (and then send me a new reel to confirm it : ) )

You make a very good case for the use of plastic bushings. People are overgeneralizing based on the stereotype that plastic is cheap without understanding that this a specialized type of durable plastic that saves weight. Well done!

How did u guys do? I saw a lot of fish staging but nothing shallow yet. It was tough for me until the last two hours i found a huge school that was on top of some tree and i just had a feast with them

I had a stradic 1000FL that I took apart and regreased. When I put it back together it was not as smooth and made a slight noise too. I took it apart again and this time didn't tighten the screws up as much. That made a huge difference. Now its smooth like new and no noise.
yeah, i know, i've done that too. I don't want to open that thing again though - its a big pain. I will fish it this season and relube it in the winter. It's really super slight difference - i don't think most people would notice it..
From an engineering standpoint- it has to do with the pitch and size of the gear. Larger teeth (Daiwa) means a little thicker grease; micro gear(Shimano) is going to dictate for lighter or softer grease. It is very evident that you, my man, are a detailed and technical fisherman. That is awesome and you give us so much to learn from. But in the real world- the average fisherman just says, "Man- what a smooth reel and check out the looks of it!" To compare the Luvias and the Vanquish- I would go ahead with the Luvias! Awesome video though- thanks!
I would agree with you that the Luvias looks better than Vanquish. It is also just as smooth. All expensive reels are equally smooth to me. Its just about resistance and inertia. Even weight is no longer an issue because $200 reels are already light enough

In my opinion the reason for plastic bushing is marketing. They need to distinguish the reels from each other. You can't have a Luvias with just as many bearings as a Exist or Cirtate. There wouldn't be a reason to buy the more expensive reel. The Exist is the pinnacle of the product line, It has it all. But you may not be able to afford the Exist so you get the Luvias which has less features. It's all marketing......
This review by far is the best review out there. It doesn't just reiderat all the Daiwa literature. It digs into what really makes this reel work. Great review 👏
yeah, they need to artificially create separation between the reels, not really trying to save money replacing bearing with bushing

Daiwa knows the average Joe is not going to tear down their Monocoque reel and puts the thicker grease in there for the lifespan of the reel. I would guess their goal is for it to last about ten years before servicing. I have the Luvias Airity FC LT 2000S-H and love it!
I'm also glad my hand is not as sensitive as yours. I don't feel that resistance your referring to.

That makes sense to me that the larger handle and added leverage masks the resistance in the larger models. Reduce the length of the handle and you would certainly increase resistance. The heavy grease is probably best for the reel but I agree with you, a lighter grease would be fine and help add to the silky smooth feel of the reel. Love the detail you put into your videos.
right. And i think they should use softer grease only for the smallest sizes (everything with 1000 size body)

Luvuas is MUCH lighter and better looking. For finesse fishing will be better. For saltwater or heavier duty fishing i would go to the FL

Gears are probably just as strong (who can really tell), but the body is not. Luvias is made of thin carbon, and Stradic FL is aluminum. U will feel the difference under load. Metal reel will always be stronger, but heavier, hence my previous comment

REF: 'The bad news is the reel is not like new after re/assy'. Having overhauled many Daiwa reels, I am 100% certain you made a small re/assy error. It has happened to me many times as well! Disassemble again paying close attention to parts order, re inspect and re/assy per the schematic. Yes, any screws (especially the ones holding plate over clutch) must be tightened a little at a time, very evenly or the stack will get cocked. You are correct, after re/assy it should spin easy and coast after release! When new, the crank handle knob will drop from horizontal to the bottom of stroke under its OWN WEIGHT! If not, the re/assy is in small error! (apologies for length of comment).
im not disassembling it again.. It's actually pretty good, most people would not detect the difference from new. But i can tell things are not perfectly alligned as before.
i have 2500S , same weight 155 i thik, it 's just awesome reel, I gave my friend a 3000 compact, 180g he loved it too, we use it for squiding , loved it, took a lot of splash of sw because it was on the boat and we had rough weather the past weeks , i think the noise and inconsistent reeling after reassembled the reel is the alignment of mag seal and the collar holding it. good luck
you have the FC model. C = compact body = 1000 size reel with 2500 size spool and 2500 size rotor and handle. You won't feel much resistance at all. If i could go back i would get taht model instead. And i think u right.
@@ifishcatfish hi, can you please give me a hand on this, I disassembled the reel for my friend, he dropped in the ocean and found it 3 days later. So I got the tool for the (left) handle side plate, opened it , removed the spring clip on the right side but still couldnt pull the main gear out, did i miss something? i saw you mention 2 different tools but do I really need to open the right side plate to pull out main gear?
@@searex2268 it doesn't come out because the driver of the locomotive hear is behind that little stabilizer shaft. There is no way to remove the main gear without disassembling everything, the rotor and the antireverse - everything. Which u need to do anyway if the reel was under water

DG04 is not only for drag. It works perfectly on the maingear. Yes, you will feel a bit of resistance for the first day of using your reel, but it will break in and holds very well throughout the season.
the texture doesnt look as smooth as the other grease. Texture looks similar to other drag grease. To be honest i think u can put any grease on the gears and they will be fine. It's a matter of getting the feel you want

@@ifishcatfish Im not Japanese, no. from Canada. The dude in the video is a Japanese, made by Shimano Japan, but reposted on youtube by some Russian guy. They show you what grease they use on every baitcaster (i imagine its the same for spinning reels) on all Shimano factories. This is for what these greases were originally designed for. I have tried the SHIP/DG6 on gears on multiple reels, its not very good for the whole season because the viscocity is too low. A stickier grease will do a better job for the whole season (Cal's Grease is also great for gears and carbontex drag).
I have cals grease and i dont like that texture and feel for gears.
Enjoyed the video. Watched a ton of 20 Luvias tear downs but this is the first in English....LOL. Mine is performing great. Only time will tell but I seriously doubt you will wear that reel out. My 2012 Luvias is as good as the day I bought it and I have lost count of the numbers of fish I caught with it. And the 2015 Luvias reels I have had for 5 years now are still in pristine shape. Hoping that Daiwa sees fit to come out with a new Presso Limited.
I hope someone from Daiwa is watching my videos, and i think someone is now, and they don't do this mistake with the New Presso (I think new Presso is coming) The reel definitely feels lighter now and it was definitely the grease.
I agree this reel will be hard to wear out though - ESPECIALLY WITH STOCK GREASE : )
I meant to ask you - i don't see u use the Luvias much, if at all. Why is that?
i_fish I bought it...and rigged it up with 4# test to yank bluegill out of the trees on a lake that is back up to normal level after 13 years of work on the dam. Until last week most of the ramps I would use there were closed. Using the 4# test out in open water is no fun with the bluegill. I also want to use it when targeting smallmouth. The virus.....along with horrible spring weather, has really cut down my time on the water.
NEWSFLASH: Before you call BS on the small white plastic gear in this reel, you need to understand what it does and how much force is exerted upon it. It is the 'oscillating' gear! It has only 1 job... to move the tiny main shaft and the reel spool, forward and aft, approximately a 1/4 to 1/2 inch (depending upon model) to ensure the line is stowed flat and evenly along the spool upon retrieve. It is the SLOWEST moving gear in any reel. It is driven by the small diameter gear on the DigGear,, the reduction gear! The gear ratio is approximately .5:1...in other words, it turns at about one half turn for every 1 turn of your reel handle or VERY SLOW! How fast can your turn you reel handle? It turns at half that speed. 99% of the force exerted on it is the weight the tiny main shaft, the spool and line...not much! Very little (

When designing a light weight reel, you sacrifice for weight savings where you can without sacrificing quality! Nuff said!

Great informative video. Thanks heaps. Unfortunately the reel doesn't feel this same. Not a good feeling when you have to use it. I will leave the thicker grease in mine & put up with that resistance. Because I would be so disappointed in myself if it doesn't feel like it originally did. $500 is $500 & not easy to come by. Yes , i recommend not touching it. Seems like longevity is important to u and this grease will definitely help
i_fish Longevity is definitely important. Especially when you pay big money for a reel. Also when using it in constant saltwater.

I Bought an luvias 2015 2000 model like 5 or 6 years ago. It is suuuuper smooth so I bought a 20 version of it. Its totaly different. I makes a weird sound when fishing and it feels like resistance. I tested with multiple lines but the problem remains. Do you recommend putting new (lighter) grease in the reel? I saw your video till the end, but im not sure yet. the resistance really bothers me a lot. The sound it makes is also unpleasant.

it is very difficult to replace the grease in this reel. If you have never disassembled monocoque reel with magnetic oil before, dont do it. It can be hard to put it back together the way it was. My reel has no noise whatsoever though. Only resistance.
@i_fish I have a Luvias LT 2500s and 3000XH in the mail. Just recently found out about the 3 bushings in the reel which made me a little worried. Would you recommend the hedgehog studio Luvias bearing kit? Maybe at the very least leave the spool and drag bearing alone but change out the single bushing in the knob?
do u think in a blind test u can tell if u have a bushing or a bearing? I don't think replacing these bushing with bearings improves anything. It only adds weight

The grease in the drag of the Luvius is also has a special type l in that it keeps it smooth on the fishs initial run apparently your thought sir ?
Luvias drag is same as the $50 Legalis..

Honest video as always. Great tear down but next time can you do a step by step disassemble so we can see each step. I know its more time consuming but it would be more helpful for us. By the way, when you're fishing i don't think you will notice the noice or the resistance atleast I can't. Thanks
I would do longer videos if people watched them, but the truth is people don't. I know a few enthusiasts will get value from a detailed video, but if this is a 40 min video it will get far less views than if its 15. Most people wont even CONSIDER starting to watch a long video. Then they start skipping back and forth to find what they need and they get annoyed (I know i do that with long videos - lol )
With respect to not noticing resistance - you are half right. True, if u fish that reel only u wont notice anything and no need to put ur reel though this invasive surgery. The problem is if u switch. U will see in my next video my setup. I have 6 rods with different lures right behind me and i keep hitting the school with different lures to see what works. IF YOU SWITCH from Vanquish to LuVias, or from Presso to Luvias, or even 2015 Luvias to 2020 Luvias, you will immediately notice the resistance in the first few seconds. Just a minute after that u adjust and no longer notice antyhing.

In regards to long videos, just insert video clips of those tricky steps you had hard time with. If you had a hard time we definitely will struggle and those tricky clips will help alot.

Not in gears. Maybe in the magseal. It has less oil now because i spilt some of it. Its hard to tell. It feels fine but not new.

no, just get the 2500 size. Or even 3500. U know better how big your fish is. But this is a perfect saltwater reel
Hi Ifish, may I ask where the 9th bearing is located I am bit confused. 2 on line roller, 4 in pinion and drivegear, 1 parasitic, 1 in handle = 8? bearings
i don't remember, this is a 3 year old video. Isn't there one on top of the spool? On the bottom they put bushing but maybe on top it was a bearing. Don't remember. Number of bearings is not important to me as long as the gears and line roller are good
Im guessing its something with the anti reverse roller bearings that its not feeling like new. Try oiling it a bit.

I think using plastic part not only for cost-cutting but also it helps to reduce the total weight. The competition is going around on reel's total weight mostly. The part is plastic since it has no pressure on it, isn't it? Thank you for the video btw.
Its not really plastic. Plastic is a term like cars, applied to everything. In cars u have ferrarri and u have ford fiesta. They make some fancy polyurethane bushings that they put even on suspension of cars. If u go to rockauto and buy bushings u will see. It is extremely durable and slippery material. It is not cheap soft plastic. I honestly believe replacing their bushing with a metal bearing will have no benefit whatsoever, and u will only add some weight to the reel.

i no longer have the oil there... but i am not sure if u can remove the entire mechanism and not put anything else back. I think its possible, but im not sure. I dont think the magseal adds the resistance though, as i removed the oil and resistance was same. Grease is the bigger problem

Great video! Unfortunately got my luvias 2000shg straight of the box with ugly main pair wobble. So every time when I start cranking, main pair knocks, feels like there is a gap between teeth. I’m wondering, is it possible to adjust main pair?
there is nothing to adjust in this reel. U can't even open it
I have the same problem with my ballistic lt... its just so depressing with the constant clicking noise while cranking. Have you come up with a solution for this?
Diawa's more expensive spinning reels are very very smooth. But IMHO, the steal if the last 25 years is the Legalis LT. Dollar for Dollar nothing is close.
yes. This is waterproof and very light and better gears, but in the hand, with eyes closed, it feels like Legalis

They are both of good quality but the Soare is easier to fix, very easy to open. If reliebility is your concern, always go with Shimano
Hi, did you measured drive gear? 2500 has 32mm .I'm just wander how big is gear from 2000?
i did not. Some of the 2500 have a 1000 size body and gears. The models with C will have the small body and big spool. The models without C will have the bigger body. They will also be heavier, if u compare weights

Can you do next a teardown for Shimano Stradic FI 2019 because i wanna see your opinion if is a good reel or not.
I don't own that reel but i can promise you its good. It is metal and kind of heavy for ultralight fishing. Also no low gear ratio. Also not a fan of shiny chrome. However mechanically its perfectly smooth and extremely low tolerances for free play.

all spools from MQ body will fix. Caldia LT, Luvias Airity, Exist LT, even the new Presso will fit. I haven't seen the new presso yet but i know it it will fit.
I just dont think the Certate will fit, as it has larger spool.. But not sure about that

I watched another CZcams link is a Russian. Dissemble the reel using the white color tools ,I'm not sure it is he diy him self.... Because I can't get the tools in my country

You have links for the screwdriver, but no link for the tool to take apart the certate or monocoque body. I am trying to find that so i could buy it for muf
i bought it from some shady russian seller on ebay. Also I paid $60 and u can find it for less now. I can't put a link to a russian seller who charges too much
I just looked it up. I only found one seller from Japan. Too expensive 110 dollars.
I encountered a similar issue with my Daiwa Certate LT 2500-H after servicing it, i noticed I lost the buttery smoothness and made the reel noisy. I did have better start up inertia but just ticked its no longer as smooth like before
So i looked at the Daiwa SLP works grease or the Shimano DG06 but sadly looks like you can only order it from Japan.
So my next alternative was the Daiwa blue grease you can order im amazon but it made it more grindy, i had to remove all of the grease and just use oil.
Would the Ardent reel butter be a good substitute or what would you recomend?
Ardent is a brand that resells chinese products. I dont recommend anything from them. DG06 grease is not good anyway, but the SLP grease is very smooth, even though resistance is not so good with it. I don't have a good suggestion at this point. I've been told about some exotic greases and i will try them, but who knows..
@@ifishcatfish I did not know Ardent is no good that now it explains why it messed up my Daiwa Certate after using Ardent Reel Kleen and now even the Reel butter did not restore my Daiwa Certate LT but rather it made the grinding noise worse.
It makes full sense now why you said going forward you would use the manufacturer grease, since now it shows it can mess up a high end reel.

Planning to buy Luvias LT and pair it with Carabus Extreme(662LS)or Graphiteleader Corto(642L-HS). I have a big dilemma:
1) buy the FC2000S size due to the low weight and do not pay attention to the resistance and work of the reel;
2) buy size 2500 and enjoy the great work in exchange for a bigger and heavier reel;
Did those 25 grams make such a big difference in the balance of the rods and the feeling of fishing with them?
How would you solve this problem?

no, 2500 is too big for THAT rod. I am not against 2500 reels for some rods, with big guides, or kind of long so they are tip heavy, but this rod weighs nothing and has very small guides and will look stupid with 2500 size reel. Resistance improves a lot with fishing. If you don't want resistance, buy the Soare XR, which will look great with the Carabus. Soare XR, if u get lucky , can be absolutely phenomenal. But sometimes they scratch a little. But even then its probably the best reel for that rod.

I'm from Europe and it's a difficult sutation because I have to think carefully about the purchase. I have one Vanquish 2500s, Stradic FL 1000 and now I would like something new from the Japanese market. I really like Luvias visually and I haven't had anything from Daiwa for a long time.
Then my choice will be Soare XR C2000sshg or Luvias FC2000s.

Recently, I bought one 2020 Luvias 2500, but I need one spool 3000 size. I need a cheap one. Can you tell me, please, which ones fit my luvias 2500? For example, caldia LT 2018 spool fits? Thank you very much (sorry my poor english...)
I dont know if caldia will fit. Caldia has different frame and may have different oscillation and maybe the spool doesnt travel as much. I can tell you presso spools will fit, but they dont have 3000 size. Dont be cheap and just buy a spare luvias spool. That is the best because it also looks nice

Nice and very detailed video! I own several 20 Luvias reels that I haven’t fished very much yet and experience quit a bit of ‘play’ ‘movement’ in the handle, when I hold the rotor it seems to be almost gone…when finesse fishing it can be frustrating because it feels like a click sometimes…

my luvias has super small free play in the handle, maybe 0.05mm but maybe less. I can feel it but i can't see it. Definitely no clicks and no sound. Also i have never had a subscriber bring this up so far, so not something i can comment on

Ok then it’s luckily not a common ‘problem’. I only notice the click feel when holding the rotor and obviously you don’t do this when fishing.
Maybe it has to do something with the anti reverse engaging what I feel ? This because it’s present the most when I stop reeling and there is pressure on the line (like when holding the rotor).
Don’t get me wrong I love the reels and they are really smooth but I’m trying to understand what the cause of this can be. I also have a Certate and this reel doesn’t has the same.

@@mikestoffels8592 i didnt try to reproduce what you are describing and i am not going to try. If i have never noticed a noise in my reel, why do funny experiments? You already spent too much time on something u say doesn't even happen when fishing.
@@ifishcatfish obviously you don’t have a answer and that’s okay. I didn’t say I don’t feel the play when I’m fishing the reels, it’s really noticeable. There are more people in America that have this play in there Luvias so it’s not just a funny experiment 😆

Be careful not to fall in this rabbit hole. If u not happy with a luvias, good luck finding a reel good enough for you because i can tell u a Stella has more free play than a luvias.
Is that's zinc main gear or duralumin gear like certate?
machine cut aluminum of course. All reels above Procyon have the higher end gears

Just watched a teardown of a Certate 8000, waaay less grease on it. Makes you wonder if it's a made in China result, in that we know they mainly care about output rate there, quality is a distant thought. I have to slightly disagree on the plastic oscillating gear, it's aluminium on the Certate, the reason the Luvias is plastic , albeit high grade, is for weight reasons, not for performance. Remember $1 saved on a $300 reel is no cost to the user but multiplied by thousands to the manufacturer - I used to work where they would worry about 1c items because it was multiplied by hundreds of thousands over time.
Weight is #1 performance metric in ultralight gear. As a matter of fact, this is why it is called Ultra-LIGHT

Don’t u think checking reels smoothness is true only under load ! Free spinning smoothness may be won by cheap chines ones ! Which i have seen alot long ago but once u put them under some loads there u’ll know how smoothness going along with cranking power which related to good gears design overall
my beef with Daiwa in this video and previous has nothing to do with smoothness though. Not even sure where u got that, as i explicitly mentioned the reel is perfectly smooth.
This is about resistance. Chinese reels always feel heavy and clunky, even if they are smooth. The entire feeling of FINESSE that your brain receives as perceptions is mostly a function of resistance. Smoothness is best measured under load, but resistance can only be measured without load, as otherwise u feel the load, not the reel. Resistance determines whether the reel feels expensive while u jig and twitch. Not when u catch the fish and fight it. Different things.
I cant believe the oscillation is plastic. You wouldn't want to winch a fish in or would it handle it? I have the certate lt reel haven't put through hard use yet.
Oscillation gear doesn't turn the rotor. There is no force there. Just moves the spool up and down, but there is no pressure. The pressure is on the rotor.
The problem with the reel is the resistance, not smoothness or durability. It is super smooth and has big gears and i have no doubt it will be durable
Ah ok cool. I thought as it goes up and down there is still a fair bit of force applied. As they go up in size the reel model they change it to aluminium. Thanks heaps from Jake.:)
moving the spool up and down is the same with fish and without fish. Only the rotor has resistance from the fish. Also this is ultralight reel. Definitely ok with plastic gear here

Dude, just get the best grease from Japan - iOS Factory and you'd get better than new performance of any reel
The softest quality grease available at hedgehog is zpi soft grease, it was also available at tacklewarehouse at some point

Yes, i can, but searching is work and sonetimes there is more than one verion or more than one source. I prefer to get link to exact product/ source. Why do u think that is the best grease? I have only daiwa and shimano grease.
@@ifishcatfish There are many videos in russian discussing the qualities of this specific grease and how to properly use it . I might do one in english next time I service my reels.

i dont think thats the case in this reel. But in some cheap reels like Revros LT looks like the bearing was removed on purpose. When u make ultralight reels, bearings add weight though

yes, leave the grease alone. What plastic gear are you talking about? The gears are machine cut aluminum and brass pinion. Nothing plastic

thats a big gear. I make it metal, you add 10 grams or more. And this is ultralight reel. Also, unlike Shimano's small models, Daiwa doesn't have grinding feel in the 2000 size reels. I promise you this reel is super smooth
