That’s Devin’s ‘Wall of sound’. There really was no guitar solo you were supposed to hear, Devin is just joking around as he was the first ever video there. He does joke. A lot. 😂

but the solo is a 4 note melody - the clever part is playing the rhythm part while singing a counter vocal melody

You are mostly correct, but he was not the first act on EMGtv, it's been going since 2009. The joke is that he says there is an epic solo but doesn't play one, also the song Kingdom has no solo.

He goes absolutely supersonic in the Death of Music and Deadhead, both live at Royal Albert Hall

I can address a couple of your comments. 1) Vocal volume - it's well known that he tends to sit his vocals lower in the mix. It's probably deliberate here. 2) Effects - I can't be certain whether or not he had an engineer bringing in/out the reverb etc. on this particular show. But I do know for a fact that for both his main and acoustic (yes he does acoustic) live shows an engineer does work on that element. A lot of the sequences/effects can/are also programmed by him on the Fractal Audio stuff that he uses.
I will recommend you listen to the other EMG stuff he played at the same time: - Willy Wanka (an instrumental that really shows off some shredding), Funeral and Hyperdrive (for Acoustic) and More (if you want more of a general idea). All here on YT if you search for EMG Devin Townsend..
The other recommendations already given are good too. If you look further into Devin then you are getting into a serious discography and be prepared to cross over many styles..

This recording was a little bit untypical. It is famous, but his life concerts are much more interesting. You already read in the comments that there was no solo. He does some rare but great solos in Failure and Deep Peace on his Plovdiv Concerts. His vocals always are stunning.

Devin has some hang-ups about his singing. He's still trying to get past that, so he will tend to mix himself pretty low. On his latest album he's a bit higher in the mix. Check out his song Lightworker for a bit of that.

Welcome to the rabbit hole. There is so much to be found in Devin's discography. And yes, the vocals buried in the mix is a Devin signature. He professes to hate his voice.

i love how his voice is _at least_ as strong and crisp as it was 30 years ago when we got to hear him debut on Vai's _Sex & Religion_ album (i believe he was 20 at the time). it was a very ho-hum album (and is VERY dated), and Devin only did vocals, but i'd say the highlight was the song _Deep Down in to the Pain_ . i seem to remember Vai talking about regretting how under-utilized Devin's talents were on that album.
i agree with you about the mix here. the "biggest" production looks to be on the "InsideOutMusicTV" YT channel ; but the cleanest version, imo, looks to be Bloodstock 2021.

Yeah he was being completely facetious with the guitar solo. The album version doesn't have a solo at all.

I have seen this video hundreds of times at this point, and watched countless reactions to it. He's doing this performance for EMG pickups, which will probably be the reason the guitar and track is emphasized. But even in his albums, his voice is only one instrument in the whole, it's not really focused on either. It's just the style of music, I think.

  • @richardwilson5560

Yeah, his voice is to inset to the music. If I could do anything, I would put the music abit lower. I feel the drum situation.. Is there a drummer in the unseen side of the studio?? Don't listen to metal anymore but that guitar is awesome, and his voice is awesome!

He does an awesome version of Bring Him Home from Les Miserable. It’s show his range of theater voice work. When he was younger he sang on Steve Via 1993 Sex & Religion album

the reason he says "the most epic guitar solo in EMG history" is because it was their first video lmao

Idk how many times I've watched this video and heard this song and I still find myself holding my breath as I watch. Six or so years later and I'm still blown away.
