    Never touched an outboard before. Going to start on 83 Evinrude 15 that's been in father in laws shop since 1990. He's passed so I can't ask if was running when parked. These videos definitely will help.

    Morning George! Nice motor! Great job on the repairs. Nothing like the smell and rattle of the old motors.
    Be well.

      Hidden Harvest Grow Lights Thank you for the kind comment. For me, troubleshooting and getting these old motors to run is fun. My nephew specializes in old Mercury motors so we share the hobby. I think his wife wanted to get those motors out of their garage. Their 14 year and son is rebuilding an old car from the ground up so he was preoccupied.

    Throw some Seafoam in there.

    Hi, I bought the exact same engine and I am very happy with it. Since I have to replace the propeller, could you give me the right measurements: pitch and diameter? Thank you very much

      Sorry, but I don’t have the measurement details. I would suggest checking marine engine.com website.

    Looks and runs fabulous. Does this model have any carb jets you have to tweak? So nice to see an engine of that vintage without any corrosion. Of course, in my region any motor a few years old is difficult to work on due to the salt-water corrosion. Water jackets and water pumps are the most vulnerable.

      The only carb jet on this engine is low speed. There is no high speed needle valve. The recommendation starting point for the low,speed is 2.5 turns out. I set it there and it seemed to be best setting. Due to the good condition of the engine, I decided not to change the impeller. When it started I would check to see f cooling water was flowing, which it was. My old 1971 9.5hp Johnson runs fine with its original impeller despite long continued use.

    "Off-On switch"?? These were nice engines, even though they had a few unforgiveable design flaws...

      kramden This last Saturday, I ran the engine on my 14’ Sea Nymph. It ran beautiful and better than my old 1971 9.5hp Johnson. About the on/off switch ... I forgot about using it but lucky for me I had left it on when I ran the carburetor dry.

      @@georgegoedecke1748 Yes, these engines have great power, not surprised it outran the old 9.5hp. I asked about the "on-off" switch because these engines came with a stop button on the tiller handle, not an actual on-off switch...Perhaps the tiller button failed and someone repaired it with a switch on the lower pan...

      kramden I was aware of a stop switch on the tiller. When I tried it it didn’t work. I had no idea that the on/off switch was an 'add on'. Thanks for the information. When my nephew gave me yet the motor, he had not looked at it closely thinking it was a 15hp. My out-of-pocket cost for repair was $36.

      What were the unforgivable design flaws?

    • @fleetwin1
      @fleetwin1 Před 3 lety

      @@jamiewhitworth7183 Well, the driveshaft/crankshaft splines love to rust/seize making the gearcase impossible to remove. It is very important to remove these gearcases every year when used in salt water to clean and relube the splines. The other engineering/cost cutting flaw is that there is no bushing between the back of the reverse gear and where is rotates on the prop shaft brg/bushing/seal assy. The hard steel gear face rubs on the aluminum casting causing excess wear on the housing and excess heat in the gearcase...This is why the oil often appears black/burnt on these units when drained. This wear allows the prop shaft to slip backwards into the bushing, which eventually causes the unit to jump out of forward gear.

    It sounds to me like it is running too rich. Close the needle a little.

      Thanks for the comment. When I put it on my boat last summer, I did fine tune it and it runs fine. It is hard to finalize the needle valve adjustment in my back yard. My next back yard test will be for a 1969 Johnson 4hp. My brother bought a boat and got the motor with it but it didn’t run well. I rebuilt the carb to replace the cork float and found timing way off. I used a timing tool. I'll post a video when the time comes. 😎
