I love the way she explains it. I'm kinda sick of "behind the scenes" stories from groups where backing vocalists are spiteful towards the leads (another example would be Melody Thornton and Nicole Scherzinger in the Pussycat Dolls) - sick of it. Don't resent someone else for having the same dream as you and getting cast in a better role - that doesn't make your role bad or your life not meaningful. Not everyone needs to be the Beyonce - quite literally. You can be amazing and special and your life can have incredible meaning and amazing experiences, all the while you are a backing vocalist or background dancer. You're gonna be okay. Stop making that a shameful thing.
I think the difference here is that Destiny’s Child were friends unlike Nicole and the other members. Also, Nicole brought it upon herself as she had a lot of control when Beyonce didnt have that much control, it was mostly Matthew.

You are completely wrong Melody was brought in as a singer not a dancer like Ashley, Kimberley, and Jessica. Carmit being the OG she is was grandfathered into the group based of her vocals, dance skills, stage presence, her beauty, and sex appeal to the masses.
Melody wanted to sing more because that’s what she DOES, not dance.
Nicole Saw her check and was being selfish and was like wait if these other ladies start getting more light I may fall to the back so she underhandedly kept them in their spots while being in her limelight for as long as she was in the group

As the person who conducted the interview, I can answer a couple of questions the come up fairly frequently. The staging of the interview, with the four girls on a bed, was set up by Sony, not the interviewer(s). Mine was just one of many interviews that the girls gave that morning and I was trying hard to come up with questions that they had not been asked a hundred times before. I knew, of course, who was who, but decided that it would be an idea if each girl introduced herself and, as I suggested, said what made them different from each other. Kelly's statement that she was the "second lead" was absolutely true and I am fairly certain that Beyonce's cough was not a comment on Kelly's description. The air was dry, they had been talking all morning and, from my position 8 feet away, the cough appeared natural. Certainly, when the interview wrapped up, there was no discussion along the lines of "what made you say that?" I am fascinated that an interview I did years ago is still raising comment and hope that, "shade" aside, viewers will still find some of it interesting.
