  • Profiles host Mickey Burns interviews singer Martha Wash perhaps best known for her 1982 mega hit “It’s Raining Men” that she recorded with “The Weather Girls.” The hit is still being played on radio stations to this day and was nominated for a Grammy in 1982. Because so many of Martha’s recordings were dance hits - she’s often referred to as “The Queen of Club Land.”

Martha is a beautiful, vibrant woman, and very classy in her responses. She didn’t trash the “model” video substitute singer. In fact, she confirmed her singing ability. When asked why that lady’s vocals weren’t used, Martha replied she didn’t know. A lesser diva would have boasted of the superiority of her own vocal instrument. Martha is too smart for that nonsense.

Met her at the Arizona Mills Mall back in late 2000s
She was signing autographs and took pictures with a few folks. After the event myself and the two others I was with were talking about how amazing she was. Turned out she was standing behind us listening and looked down and said "Babies I'm highly over rated honestly and laughed". A couple minutes later she came back with a tray of food and asked to join us. The answer was simple and it was the best 45 minutes of our life. She didn't talk about herself at all just asked about us and our families. She left us with hugs and smiles. Class, talent, etc. Simple enough!

C+C Music Factory added Martha to the roster after the whole debacle but it didn't save the group. Her lawsuit happened around the time Milli Vanilli's career crashed and burned and Paula Abdul was being accused of lip-syncing someone else's vocals. Milli Vanilli might be extreme but movies and albums have been uncrediting artists for years. Marni Nixon is probably the best example of a singer who sung so many well-known songs, never credited and was never a household name. I'm glad Martha Walsh was a part of an effort to make it all more transparent.

Its enough they dont use her face and body give the woman the credit she deserves. She does have a timeless iconic voice

At that time, as I remember, the videos were promoting superficial body images. I had noticed that a lot of black videos didn't have dark skinned girls in them. The girls they used looked multi racial.

At the time, music videos were mamdatory and were all about the visuals. Unfortunately, C + C decided to use Zelma to lip Martha’s vocals and made a big mistake in doing so.
Again, this was just a bad call because everyone involved back then-including Zelma Davis-were all very talented and the rest is history.

Martha is awesome. That womans voice has had me praising God and smacking ass. Often at the same time! Im so glad she finally started getting the credit , love and money she has earned and deserved for decades. She is the reason backup singers and co writers get noticed. The biggest wrong was C&C pulling the Milli Vanilli on her with Zelma. They didnt use zelmas voice cause the butch cant speak english. I apollogize for the B word. Zelma is srop dead gorgeous and talented but that thing was wrong. Freedom got screwed too. The man went into the whole gig thinking he was part of the group. Found out he was just punching a clock. They used Freedom and Martha to get C&C on the charts then dropped em. C&C were great producers and incredible at putting groups together but they were out for themselves to hell with the true talent. Freedom is working on some new stuff now. My prayers have been answered. He put down the tool bag and picked up a pen paper and a mic

They did her wrong by putting a pretty face (bet she couldn't even sing) that lip-synced to Martha's incredible voice in the music video. It was so disrespectful to her, unacceptable and vile. Martha wasn't a conventional beauty but music isn't about beauties or bodies, it's supposed to be about talent and she's the voice that gave life to that incredible hit. They owe most of the success of that song to Martha.
