Excellent discussion - all patients should, at the very very least, have full informed consent!

I totally agree. Unfortunately that is not often what happens and so many unsuspecting souls and their families only find out the risks in the aftermath of whatever cocktail they've been put on and told they're "safe and well tolerated."

Absolutely! It’s something it seems we need to demand, and is often not offered.
I was told Prozac in about 94 was “a wonder drug” and was “to be taken for life” to rectify “a chemical imbalance” and “like insulin for a diabetic”. Well, that stopped me questioning for years! I then had manic episodes while told to stay on Prozac from 2 years later, first time in my life. I’d previously had high periods but not actually sleepless, or for long.
Until I had a new critical psychiatrist (which can sound negative or “anti” but it was progressive for me). Then I read her books like The Myth Of The Chemical Cure which was published in 2007. I read it I think about 2010-11. It took my blinkers off! And I carried on asking questions. I moved to a new health area, had a terrible time trying to get assessed, heard and treated healthily and appropriately. Meanwhile my GP/MD simply doled out more pills.
It took 8 years of depression, anxiety, panic attacks and suicidal ideationplanning and 2 attempts in new NSFT UK area.
I now finally have new progressive Specialty Dr (Psychiatry) who’s been looking at my whole Mental Health needs holistically. I’ve now had much individual, bespoke multidisciplinary care, treatment and support. Way less meds! NO benzos at all - actually was exacerbating suicidal thinking/planning in me. Only mild antihistamine to take edge off anxiety or use 2 for sleep, and approaching taper from low dose (now) SSRI - which I _know_ caused very unhelpful mania for me. V low dose AP, which I hope to taper later. It’s still a long road but I’ll get there. I’ve been assessed “stable and balanced” with one understandable anxiety episode, dealt with from using my current great care plan.
I’ve often contributed my views to Neseret on X/Twitter.
I hope all’s going well in your new MH adventure!

At 7:35 you mentioned not having the proper training to taper and discontinue patient medications so it's thought that the patient is drug seeking. That happened to me and it's devastating, cruel, and unusual punishment for crimes that were never committed. I'll never allow myself to be prescribed anything that causes dependence again no matter how bad I might need it. And now I'll check beforehand myself if the medication can cause dependence. The doctor absolutely can and will cut you off arbitrarily and this practice must stop!

@@pf100andahalf The reckless prescribing must stop, and people also need to be fully informed what they’re signing up for when they get initiated on psychiatric drugs. As well, when they are ready to taper or stop, there shouldn’t be any judgment around it. It’s their right to reduce or stop a medication that’s causing them harm or unwanted effects. Anyone who can not safely guide people through this process shouldn’t be prescribing.

@@NeseretBemient Thank you so much for helping to get the word out about this important topic. I wonder how many more years, and lives, it will take before tapering and discontinuation of medications are taught in med school. I had to teach myself how to taper from online forums and facebook groups that specialized in tapering. There are lots of good people who are willing to help, people like you.

@@pf100andahalf Proper and safe tapering is a life saving measure literally and figuratively. There's untold suffering that's caused because this critical education is missing from physicians and psychiatrist. It's incredible how many are told to taper medication within 2-4 weeks, even powerful meds like Benzos and then cut off, misdiagnosed, and further medicated. It's an absolute travesty.

i take cymbalta and if i miss one dose, i notice it in my mood the next day. two doses( so two days) and I can't open or move my eyes without brain zaps, dizziness, and my ability to effectively regulate my emotions is gone. the medication definitely helped/helps my mood regulation, but i'm so nervous for whenever, if ever i stop. i would do crack before i missed another two doses (i'm MAYBE exaggerating).

@@chanelise7894 That's definitely sign of dependency, meaning your brain and body have adapted to the presence of the medication. Was there ever a med review and discussion around deprescribing and safe tapering with your prescriber? As well, were you told about withdrawal and how difficult it would be to come off of these meds?
