THE BIKERIDERS Movie Review | Tom Hardy | Austin Butler | Jodie Comer

- We're heading in opposite directions on "The Bikeriders," Jeff Nichols' star-studded drama inspired by the real-life escapades of a Midwestern motorcycle gang in the 1960s. Tom Hardy, Austin Butler and Jodie Comer lead an ensemble cast of character actors. We both appreciated the costume and production design and sense of place, but disagreed as to whether the film works as a whole. Nichols wrote the script and directed, based on the book of the same name by Danny Lyon. Co-starring Mike Faist, Michael Shannon, Norman Reedus and Damon Harriman. In theaters now.

From what I understand the origin of this biker phenomena is quite simple; returning young World War 2 vets, used to that special kind of brotherhood that only comes from the camaraderie of facing near death in battle, are at odds with the almost alien reality of civilian life and they find this alternative life style speaks to them in similar ways they remember.
There are tapes of Kathy and Jodie was emulating it… perfectly.
Something can be accurate to life but still not feel quite right because the actor isn't fully convincing while doing it
@@johnjungkook2721 oh she committed and was convincing, Kathy had a very unusual accent and voice. Jodie’s dialect coach said Kathy’s vowels were completely contradictory. Risky, perhaps, but she chose to re-create Kathy’s voice exactly rather than go for a neutral Chicago accent. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kathy herself got teased for her strong accent and drawl.
I really loved this movie. It just overtook Furiosa as my favorite movie of the year. The actors absolutely killed it. Loved the story.
Agreed
@@user-qq2xl7re6e That's big!
It’s my favorite only behind Dune 2.
Do you guys only watch Hollywood movies?
Because it's trash , watch Asian and European movies, and you'll find these films trash
Most anyway
Hardy butler are crap compared to your typical Asian actors or European
Literally type in Google the best European films in 20 years and Asian then you have access to some excellent films with good actors
HATED Furiosa, it was the opposite of the completely visceral Fury Road which I loved. I missed Charlize and Tom!
"A book that came to life, but just a glossy coffe table book" must be one of the best metaphors I've heard recently.
I really liked the film, the atmosphere, the roar of the engines. It’s a pity that you didn’t understand that the plot of the film comes from the perspective of the heroine. 🔥🔥
We totally understand that, and we discussed that she's our conduit into this dangerous world, similar to Goodfellas. Glad you liked it!
I LOVE Jodie Comer
Jodie Comer did base her accent on 13 minutes of interview tape with the original Kathy.
Far from empty, this movie is absolutely beautiful in its nuance, lushness, and themes of loyalty, avoidance and longing. But you have to pay attention to the details to discover the nuggets of gold.
michael shannon’s small role is the best and most authentic part of this movie imo. pretty good cinematography and design too
He's always great.
Tom Hardy is watchable in anything…mask or no mask.
Well when compared to most other critics their view of this film is a bit of an anomaly...I saw it and it is great film...not what most people EXPECT..but of course that's it's best quality‼️
I saw it, and it was boring , kind of like a wet fart
Nothing about it was rememberable, plus none of the actors were good in it
In fact, they were annoying
@@ryansweeney1661 that way to put it it is "I" THOUGHT IT WAS BORING..
(since you are only talking about YOUR a opinion...since obviously
It WAS'T boring to thousands of other people ..with better taste than you)
I'm from Chicago and thats how a lot of older Chicago people talk so I wasn't bothered by it. That accent is mostly gone in newer generations but you definitely hear it
Thanks for that insight!
I just saw it at 10:45 am. Man I absolutely loved it! Austin Butler, Tom Hardy. Yeah 🪮
I really liked the film. It was interesting to watch the characters. All three main characters gave excellent performances.
7 years since Jeff Nichol’s last movie, figures its not an ABSOLUTE home run but I’m definitely interested, especially for whatever that accent Hardy is doing.
Yes, if you can figure it out, please let us know :)
Don’t let this review dissuade you. The movie is beautiful filled with a nostalgia only Nichols can capture. I was so worried it was just going to emulate sons of anarchy but instead it is closer to The Outsiders. It really shows real people, which is why some people may miss the point. We’ve been so inundated with larger than life fake people when we see authentic people it’s hard to recognize and appreciate. It’s an excellent exploration of a subculture
@@dr.deborahbarr4389 We agree, Deborah, people should check it out and decide for themselves! We always encourage that.
Well said ‼️
This movie was fantastic. My GF and I both left the theater feeling like we saw a really high quality movie....Finally.
It was refreshing to watch a well-written movie with amazing period details, beautiful cinematography and some superb acting.
As a grown up who is 100% done with Hollywood CGI superhero crapfests, I appreciated this film.
A future cult classic.
I love Jeff Nichols’ films. So I’m kinda disappointed that it comes off as an empty movie. I’ll still go check it out though. Thanks you guys!!
Please do and let us know what you think!
Definitely go see it. It’s definitely not empty but filled with authentic people and a real story where the culture is one of the main characters.
To be honest, I do think that those "weird/ quirky" voices and accents that Jodie and Tom are doing are just fitting. Cause that is reality. Those were random people that Danny Lyon interviewed, of course they wouldn't necessaryily have really enjoyable or understandable voices that are easy to listen to. I loved their perfomances
That is a very astute observation!
Also, I don't really understand how one can say it is a boring movie.. When I was in the theatre I was always contently watching, not one moment in which i thought a shot was too long or not needed. I think the pacing of the movie was perfectly fine to hold the watchers attention (and tbh I am someone of short attention span).
The fact that the characters weren't that fleshed out with their backstory also didn't bother me, since that is not what the movie is about. It is about that feeling of belonging in this club that those guys had felt back then and how that got destoyed. And even though you didn't have much of their backstory, I feel like you could always understand why they acted or felt the way they did. Or at least you could think yourself some part of it. Cause Jeff the director obviously doesn't know much about these peoples lifes and feelings either, I think it is best that he kept those backstorys and inner thoughts of some characters up to interpretation
The only real thing that kinda disapointed me is the ending. Even though I know it is directed in a kind of documentary order, I thought the end would be more of an spectacle. But also, that is just the real story, so I'm glad Jeff didn't come up with some crazy fictional ending just to please some watchers..
btw English isn't my first language, so please excuse weird expressions haha
They are truly the sound of the area. Took me back to my childhood growing up in northern Illinois in the 60’s
@@orazoraa Haven't seen this, but I wonder why you brought up shots not being too long. I often have problems with films having shots that are too short. Quick cuts make it hard to really get immersed. It's gotten worse and worse with Hollywood movies over the years to the point I think your average viewer gets impatient with longer shots
I swear to God Christy has elevated her annual sponsor segway/call out! Gets me every time! Lol
Ha, thanks!
It is about a biker gang from 1965. It's about the lifestyle of the Vandals. Not really about any individual person but instead the changes within the club. It's slow, not violent. It's not for everyone but still entertains.
The Tom Hardy voice acting distraction is a real thing. Even in Fury Road the way he was grunting his lines completely pulled me out of the movie. There was even a scene were he was so barely audible when talking to Charlize Theron I thought “Hardy seems like he’s trying to get under Theron’s skin w his ridiculous grunting like he’s baiting her into an offscreen fight.” Afterwards I read that he was extremely frustrated w the direction, didn’t understand his character, and Theron and he hated each other- he was constantly making the entire crew wait an hr or two before he showed for a scene. Glad someone else out there also finds him distracting (although he’s undoubtedly great in a few other movies like Locke etc)
Ha: That's bait! And yes, we loved him in Locke and even gave him best actor at our LA Film Critics Awards that year. Thanks for your thoughts!
Christy’s segues into the ads are masterful. Looking forward to this movie! I just want the vibes.
Yeah, I'm on the Alonso side of this one. Maybe not quite as lovingly as him, but I enjoyed watching it greatly (craft, performance, mood/vibe) despite the narrative deficiencies. I'm probably a 6.5-7ish. Liked it. Not a great film.
It's amazing how these pseudo-intellectuals can miss a poignant plot, if it's not sitting on your face. The plot was subtle, but you might have spotted it had you blown the dust out of your ears. To sum up simply, basically you have this family man, JOHNNY, bored with his life, starts a biker club based on the excitement he saw, and felt, from a Marlon Brando movie. The club was meant as a way for him and his friends to get together, and to ride and talk about bikes. But the realities of life, the changing world, and the violent nature of the sort that his club attracted, slowly caused him to loose control, and he was drowning in all of this violent youth. That's why he wanted Benny to take over the club, because he knew that it would end up killing him if he didn't get out. It's a commentary on movies and fantasy, versus real life. That's why the first half of the film felt like a B movie. And then it gets darker, and more realistic as it goes along. It's not a fantasy anymore.
Why so personal?
Well said. And I agree. People cannot seem to appreciate authenticity any more because all we get is overblown unrealistic people. This to me is the 2nd best movie this year behind only Dune 2
Johnny's scenes on his last day were very touching, I thought. His story was what resonated with me most after I left the cinema.
Totally agree on the emptiness and accents being annoying ideas.
I just didn't care about anyone in it. And it felt incomplete. I'm not sure why so many good actors felt drawn to this movie.
I'm pretty much a "split the difference" of your two scores. I want to specifically credit the audio folks on this project. Hardy and Butler are not performers that are known to project very clearly in many of their roles but their dialogue here was always intelligible to me.
It’s like they tried making that scene in A Bronx tale into a movie.
That's funny!
I am such a huge fan of Mud. An immensely underrated film in my opinion.
Mud is good! So is Take Shelter.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been seeing reviews saying we don’t get let into the characters or into their reasons for starting the group, marrying Benny, why Benny loves riding so much, etc. I feel like nowadays with so many films acting like the audience is dumb and needs breakdowns all the time, a lot of the absent character development could be self-explanatory.
I really enjoyed tbis film. It felt like it could've maybe been more fleshed out character-wise. But overall, I really enjoyed the story that was told. A very true and down to earth tale of how motorcylce clubs turned to being legitimate gangs.
It exemplified how/why people join these groups for the sense of community and belonging. But also, the very toxic and self-destructive norms that lead them largely down a path of sorrow, unhappiness, or even death. It wa a very informative and enjoyable experience.
1st, "Goodfellas" is one of the best movies of all time, this movie should not be compared to it. 2nd, Hardy is one of my favorite actors, but the voice in this was not a good choice. "The Drop" is a great underrated movie w/ Hardy and Gandolfini, and 3rd, I think Alonso might have gotten swept up in a bunch of handsome guys on motorcycles.....lol.
Jodie Comer surpassed Christian Bale’s Batman for the most grating voice ever in a movie
The loveless and this movie is an amazing double feature.
Having lived the life style, the movie was right on the mark. About the accents, I know folks who speak like this, from Milwaukee and Chicago. Cinematography was spot on. Good movie.
Motorcycle clubs aren’t always as exciting as Hollywood makes them. There usually isn’t much of a plot in life when you’re living in the moment.
“ You don’t go anywhere, you just go…”
Thank you for that perspective! Glad you enjoyed this.
The Drop, Locke, Dunkirk, Peaky Blinders, Legend, Bronson, etc…Hardy is always doing a specific accent/voice, so even if it misses it’s still fun to watch. His character in The Drop has Brando all over it for sure.
He can be very entertaining. That trailer for the third Venom looks extremely silly and fun.
Very 60’s hangout movie. Liked it!
Another masterful Lodge product segue.
Was a great movie and if you lived back then you understand. It not empty it that you don't understand it.
No movie is everybody's cup of tea. Just saying.I love Jodie Comer and her acting talent is beyond anything.
You'll have to let us know what you think of her in this. Thanks for watching!
@@BreakfastAllDay I think you missed the backstory on Kathy. There was a 30 minute tape of her voice. Jodie had to perfect that accent from that tape. That's how Kathy sounded in real life. One thing I won't ever take away from Jodie is the fact that she can master an accent.
@@DeborahVerret-yp9fp Oh it's so specific, we figured this had to be what the real-life person sounded like.
@@DeborahVerret-yp9fp Her accent is very accurate.
That doesn't mean it's 100% convincing when she uses it. Do I believe she sounds just like real-life Kathy? For sure. But did Jodie embody the character to the point where the accent feels natural? Maybe not.
@@johnjungkook2721 You make a good point. But when you have very little voice to work with and only pictures to work from it makes it difficult. I'm not sure anyone else could've have done it any better than her.
"Empty and superficial"?! 🤐 No comments.
I am very torn if I want to go see it in the theater or not. If so, it is mostly for the cast. But I suspect this might be one of the movies, that I go in with modest expectations and could end up really enjoying.
Let us know!
It is worth seeing on the big screen for the authentic grandeur of the time period and the sound of all those time period authentic bikes!
@@BreakfastAllDay I had a good time. More of a vibe movie, I think.
What's happening with Tom Hardy's voice in this film lol
What's happening with Tom Hardy's voice in every movie?
and how long have you been sick? do you hear voices in your head? Take care.
Please review Stress Positions
Well what about Mike Feist? How big a role does his character play?
He's not in it very much, actually. They sort of weave him in and out, asking questions and holding a microphone. But he has a lot of scenes with Jodie Comer.
I think I cannot wait!!!
I hate when Christie is right when she poops on movie I am excited to see.
Aww, you should go see it anyway!
Sadly she is not right in this instance. It is definitely worth going to see for yourself.
I thought it was enjoyable but it was a one time watch. The narration scenes lost all the tension.
SPOILERS:
I could tell the way she was speaking about Benny want you want to think he was dead, I knew he wasn't. And then the totally telegraphed death of another character towards the end, paintully obvious lol. The frame story approach ruined all the tension of the film. Felt like Goodfellas-lite, but not nearly as iconic or rewatchable. Tom Hardy is always a blast to watch tho
With such a generic title (albeit a published source), I suspected it might lack a compelling story. I'm with Christy.
Looks like a rental, with Villanelle being the primary reason.
Does a good audience in the theater make the movie better?
It can! Something like A Quiet Place where everyone is just silent, holding their breath together. One of the most fun times we had at the movies was Piranha 3-D because it was so insane, the kind of thing where the energy of a crowd makes it even wilder.
Thank you for responding
Nooooo! Oh wow and w that cast 😢
Don’t take this as face value. Go see it. Well worth your time just for the authentic portrayals of the time period. I’ve seen it twice already and can’t wait to see it again.
There is not much of the stakes I wanted from this and over all this was really just a slice of life film about a bike gang. For me this could have had a lot more drama.
This movie was great, but is it worth going to the theaters? Nah, just wait until it hits streaming
B.A.D. overall score of 6.3... I might still go see this and find out for myself.
Yes you should. Personally I disagree with their score and assessment.
This movie was great. It is the kind of nostalgic based character drama we don’t get enough of. Reviewers that don’t get it, then bash it are really annoying. Perhaps it’s you that is empty since you can’t see the beauty of the story.
Hi Deborah, so glad it worked for you. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch our review and comment.
This is such a stupid response to a reasonable review.
There is always the 10:30 Locke (2014) Tom Hardy? 🚘📱🫠
We love him in Locke!
"I'll do your movie but only if I do a really goofy voice!"
-Tom Hardy
and how long have you been sick? do you hear voices in your head? Take care.😮😮😮
He had a weird voice naturally. The voices he does in movies are more tolerable.
👍🏻
The textures, period detail, bikes, and the overall feel you get from the visuals look great in the trailer. It all feels genuine. But I heard a little bit of Jodie Comer's accent in a clip another CZcamsr pkayed (there's very little of her voice in the trailers) and the sound of it was SO distracting and weird. Kinda reminded me of Fargo on steroids. Awful.
But that’s how the real woman talked. She had 30 minutes of authentic audio and worked for months to sound just like her. Being from that area myself I can tell you it was spot on!
@@dr.deborahbarr4389 I believe it!
The trailer bored me. Celebrating bad boys/ hooligans? Easy pass.
I love how Christy had a blank look when Alonso was talking about the movie. There was nothing she could agree with… 😂😂😂
This doesn’t celebrate bad boys. In a way it’s the opposite. Almost a cautionary tale of that lifestyle. It’s a beautifully authentic portrayal of that time period. Well worth a watch in the theater.
I found this very frustrating because nothing seemed to be motivated. Having the framework of constant flashbacks through Jodie Comer, it belabors a “tell, don’t show” mentality.
And as for Comer and Hardy, their accents wouldn’t be as egregious if what they were saying was interesting. We never have this issue with Kidman, Streep, or Zellweger because they often have better scripts and dialogue.
The part toward the end where she's describing how the gang devolved into a criminal operation was totally tell don't show. Thanks for your thoughts, Antony!
a lot of Comer's dialogue in this movie is taken word-for-word from interviews with the real life Kathy, accent and all. How much more authentic to the person could you be?
There’s a difference between real life talking and compelling dialogue. This isn’t a documentary. What she said was irrelevant half the time to what was going on in the story.
@@antony_post completely disagree.
Sad Christy!
I can't stand Tom's Hardy voice in this film and Venom 😂😂
and how long have you been sick? do you hear voices in your head? Take care.

I'm taking Christy's word on this one. Doesn't seem to be much of a story.
You will miss out on a beautifully told story of that time period. It seems to me that Christy sadly missed all the main points of the film.
@@dr.deborahbarr4389 Dr. Deb I'll give this some thought. Thanks.
@@dr.deborahbarr4389 I will keep that in mind. Maybe catch it on streaming. Thanks.
Christy's expression during Alonso's take is really indescribable but says it all! 🙏😂
The pouting 😆
The irony for me was a theme of the movie was Boomers ruined the club that GI's started and Silents popularized. And the annoying Boomers all around me as I was trying to enjoy this very important movies nearly ruined it for me.
How pretentious…the movie was and is awesome.
We're happy you had a good time!
I walked out saying almost all the same talking points as Christy brings up. My movie buddy seemed more Alonso.
Ha, thanks Bob!
Totally EMPTY and DISAPPOINTED movie. Don't waste your money.
Sons of anarchy did a much better job of this. That said they did have several seasons to flesh everything out
It’s not at all like sons thankfully. It has a completely different message. Rather than romanticizing and glorifying the lifestyle it presents what it is actually like. Which was most refreshing, but we as a society have been so desensitized to authenticity we equate it with boring and empty which is really sad.
The female critic is doing too much.
Oh no, sorry! Hate when i do too much. Also, my name is Christy. Nice to meet you.
The movie wasn’t as bad as you say it was
Nice to meet you too
Jodie Comer's narration (and accent) was distracting and unneeded. Two hour long movie and I never knew why these guys were friends nor did I care. Just a gang of losers drinking and fighting. Austin Butler was a haircut in search of character. 2 hrs long but it felt like 5. By comparison a 3.5 hr epic like Killers of the Flower Moon breezes by and leaves you wanting more
This would have been such a great follow up role for Austin Butler. But when I learned Nichols directed it it was a deal-breaker. He makes boring movies. Maybe Christy is learning that boring is not art👏
Take Shelter was not boring. That was intense.
@@BreakfastAllDay Didn't see that one. Maybe I will.
Literally the first time I’ve ever heard anyone bad mouth Nichols’ films. He usually knocks it out of the park
@@dollarsaurus01 This guy thinks everything you have to think about for more than 7 seconds is boring.
I wouldn't say it boring, but it needed better characterization. I couldn't root for any of these guys. And I kinda wish Michael Shannon was the lead, not Tom Hardy
Such a waste of a great cast
The woman who hates this film and Has never heard the real Kathy's voice. Then to criticize Jodie Comers accent. Wake up lady your voice on this review is annoying nasal and boring.
Aren't you sweet for watching our review, though. Thanks so much. By the way, my name is Christy. Nice to meet you.
Third movie in a row that I've had a problem with the title, after Brats and Tuesday. Can't writers come up with better?
There are tapes of Kathy and Jodie was emulating it… perfectly.
Well there you go! Makes sense. Thanks for that.
It's accurate to the tapes but it's still super distracting to me, for some reason. In a film full of kooky accents, there's still something unconvincing about hers. It's like she didn't fully embody the character enough for me to accept her accent as real.
@@johnjungkook2721 Appreciate that insight!
@@johnjungkook2721not everyone found it distracting. I’ve read some very positive reviews about her accent work in this film. I know the director appreciated the work that went into getting the accent right, he spoke about it enough. Honestly, Tom’s “Brando” impersonation bothered me more, though i could understand that choice because of the character’s love of the Wild Ones.
Totally EMPTY and DISAPPOINTED movie. Don't waste your money.
