    This past season I purchased an 1984 Endeavor 28, spent the summer sailing her around western Lake Erie and teaching my teen aged sons how to sail. My oldest Graduates Highschool in 3 years. it is my plan to follow in the wake of Lady K and sail down to the Bahamas as a last Father and son trip before he goes off to collage and forgets about his old Dad. :D. Thanks for the fantastic info.

    Good memories. We met you guys in Georgetown. ⛵️Layla is still at Glades Workyard. It’s been so long since we’ve seen her. She has had a beehive in her lazerette that cost us $500US to remove. Also a woodpecker decided to build a nest in our Beautiful wooden masts. So a good sized hole that needs repair. January we are hoping to cross the border and get back to her. She will need a ton of work. Your videos are always so informative for beginners. I can add to your info on the crossing. We crossed from both West Palm and No Name. No Name was much better. West Palm trying to get out of that inlet was totally nuts!!!! I agree. We did have a good sail across though to West End. No Name was faster. We left on a West wind 15 knots. As we got closer to Bimini, the wind switched to a more northerly direction while we were still in the Gulf Stream. Those waves switched so quickly to shorten wave length and gain height squaring off. Thank goodness they were more of a following pattern for our double ender. Only problem was the speed and the fear of a broach. We sling shot into the marina still staying in control of our ⛵️Layla. It was a blast but we really had to be in the game. Miss it so much!!!

    Sort of fun. Been there, done that- but, anticipating the trip is 1/2 the fun. Prep- not so much! Hahaha. But, I WILL be so jealous of you in the islands, picking day trips... Yeah, miss that. Hope you are there and safe. Of course, you traveled safe (wife & daughter ensures that), so- unlike the 'post teenie' crowd (too much money, free time & access to gorgeous vessels) and- for that- I'm grateful. It's amazing that we survived our youth to do this as adults, right?

    Best intro to date! I remember watching this vid when you first posted it. It's as good now as when you first released it. It's a very iconic 'first' for many sailors, crossing the gulf stream, and I'm looking forward to the day I can do it for the first time too. Keep up the great vids!

    Very cool video Tim, we just did the Gulf Stream Crossing, West Palm Beach to West End, Bahama's and had no issues. Because we tracked a straight line we cutoff about 9 miles so our trip was closer to 60 miles. We covered that distance in 3.48 hours.. Our boat is a 2020 Corsair 880 Sport Trimaran. The morning we left the winds were 270/ 18 to 20 knots, gusting to 22. Perfect for the Corsair, we averaged 17.2 knots and reached 21.4 knots on several occasions. Even at those insane speeds the Corsiar is very stable, tracks straight, and very easy to sail. We are also using a Simrad TP10 Tiller Plot autopilot to make the navigation easier......

    So my boat is a cabin cruiser it’s a late 80s model Carver 25 foot with a small block Chevy in it, and I love it I’ve gone through the engine replaced every piece that bolts onto the engine and gone through the heads and repaired and adjusted them as necessary I’m currently in the middle of remodeling the head and the galley to be more suitable for my family however after watching all these sailing videos kinda wishing I got in a sailboat instead, and the main reason is fuel yes sailboats may be slower however you can sale indefinitely for free cruisers are so big and so heavy that they use a tremendous amount of fuel my boat weighs almost 4 tons

    I had watched the original video before, and had made notes on the southern route, but was thinking more to start from Miami, or Key Largo when my time comes in a couple of years. I need to make this crossing before retiring from the airlines so I could fly out of any port I'm in if I need to, or to fly crew in. My initial final destination is Aruba, as currently planned. Thanks for this newer video.

    I am hoping to make the passage this winter. One to look into is the Covid testing. Another channel says you get a test here then apply for the paperwork BUT you have to be in the Bahamas in 5 days to do another test. If you don't make the weather window you have to go back to GO and not collect your $200

    Again, thanks for your work on this channel. Love to see your niece (I think) in your vids. It tells us who you are! I am retiring soon. I bought a 24' sloop to learn 4 years ago, just got a 32' sloop and sailed from NYC to Down East and will continue to learn. I want to summer in Maine and winter in the Caribbean. I'm consider making home base, either USVI or Bahamas. Question: which makes sense for someone that wants a home there and also want to be out and about in the boat for plenty of "sail abouts"? Interested in your take.

  • @humbertojimenez3475
    @humbertojimenez3475 Před 2 lety +1

    Some notes;
    1-the beer is “k’Lick” the sound of a wooden cow bell.
    2-ignore the floating channel markers going into the Bimini. They are often missing or out of position. Come in w the sun high (better visibility) and stay over the grass. Grass doesn’t move and you can judge the depth. Use land ranges, compass heading & your eyes to judge depth. If you arrive too late at night to safely enter N Bimini, anchor south of South Bimini (don’t fish till you clear customs!)
    3-West End is much closer to W Palm compared to Port Lucaya and customs is easy there. It’s more convenient for heading to Abaco as well. If you are towing your dinghy, shorten the tow line just before you enter the break wall
    4-a South wind over 15 will make the Gulf Stream rough, but not as deadly as a North wind.

  • @douglasmontgomery6315
    @douglasmontgomery6315 Před 2 lety +1

    Tim, last time I was there we stayed at south Bimini @ the Bimini Sands. I've heard they had some financial issues. Is Bimini Sands still open? Any update on the Hilton property over there as well?

  • @t.a.ackerman4098
    @t.a.ackerman4098 Před 2 lety

    I'm not an ocean sailor so I wasn't aware of the effect of the gulf stream. I would be dumb enough to try the crossing with a north wind thinking "Aha! This will get me there fast".

    What about returning to the US from Bimini? I assume you would want to make use of the Gulf Stream by heading NW-or heading W and having the stream make your effective course be NW? What’s a good FL port to aim for?

    nice video, as always.
    but: i really have a hard time understanding 8 knots as being a "rocket ship" but then i started out in a power boat, that red lined at 17/18 knots, cruising at 12ish.
    i couldn't find an email address to send you an email.
    one of these days I suppose I'll have to have my wallet to become a patreon to communicate with you outside of this youtube comments section?(that was a question)
    why would a fella want to stop at the Bahama's on the way to mexico from Maryland in December? (i'm looking for an excuse to stop)
