Then while I let a shot of water pass for cleaning and the steam build up, i wash the portafilter and start another grinding for another coffee. While the grinding is not even done i start steaming the milk then start the 2nd espresso while adding milk to the first. Then start another cleaning cycle while adding milk. The Bambino’s are limited to dark espresso roast only due to water temperature being fixed. The Barista Express can handle much lighter roasts. Just something to consider.

    • @valentinventures
      @valentinventures Před 6 měsíci +19

For light roast espresso that tastes good on a budget. Get a wacaco picopresso. There is no better value for money tool in my setup for getting decent extraction from light roasts. It’s tiny so it’s quick to bring the whole thing up to temp. Let it hang out in your kettle (above the water line) with the lid off as it boils. That and it’s very portable. It also gives you a great deal of control over water flow which the brevilles do not since it’s hand cranked. It’s actually a very capable machine. I sold my barista express because the only thing it did better for me than my picopresso was froth milk and I don’t drink milky drinks anymore. It’s not quite a professional grade tool and there is no pressure gauge, but at the entry level, it’s a much more capable one and the results are consistently good once you get a feel for how to operate it.

Also, from personal multi - month hands on experience with both ThermoJet and Thermoblock Machines from Breville/Sage - the Thermoblocks gave me considerably balanced and sweeter results with straight Espresso. (Shots prepared with the same grinder)
Thermoblock = Express, ThermoJet = Bambino, Pro, Touch
That said - for all milk drinkers, being able to have a milk beverage ready and a clean machine afterwards just two minutes after you turned it on is hella impressive and goes a long way into sticking with espresso as a thing in the long run.
Small pet peeve with the "old" Express - 2 our of 100 shots had severe channeling that was not caused by the user, but by the water distribution over the shower screen being one sided. Puck showed deep indentation exactly where it lines up with the water inlet behind the screen.
Wasn't a consistent problem, but a problematic inconsistency in those few cases.

I use the Express and on average it takes it roughly 15-20 seconds to heat up. On top of all, grinding and puck prep easily take about a minute, so I don't see how that is a problem.
I can get better swirl for my latte using a single hole steam wand, so to me the total time for heating up the milk is not so vital.
I like having the grinder integrated, as I don't have space for a coffee machine and a separate grinder on my kitchen counter at the moment.

Exactly LOL even if it took a minute it’s a non problem… you can wake up, turn on your machine, go wash your face and come back ready to pull a shot lol. My express takes 20 seconds max and even then you’re gonna wanna run it under hot water, weigh out your beans, and prep everything’s anyways. You can of course get a nicer grinder but the convenience of everything in one machine is nice. I absolutely agree with your conclusion, but the steaming really has nothing to do with how many holes the steam tip has! 😅

Personal opinion is separate grinder is important. Imagine a broken grinder you don't know how to repair yourself; 1. you ship the entire thing and now you got nothing; 2. it can't be fixed - do you throw it out or buy a separate grinder to take up even more space? Separate tools allow more flexibility.

So while the tank and reservoir are smaller on the bambino, I find that the tray underneath evaporates off in dry weather faster than it fills, meaning less mold and less emptying and less cleaning.

When compared on these variables yes, when compared om other variables maybe yes or no. Tbf, under a minute warmuptime is negligable when you consider grinding, preparing grounds, tamping and possibly filling your milk pitcher beforehand.
Every choice has pro's and cons. Work them out farefully before making a choice.
But this entire debate could've ended at grinder flexibility and or performance.
But, amazing deals can be had with second hand options skewing the comparison.

They are amazing entry-level machines for people looking to drink espresso daily or have a home barista hobby. This is not entry-level friendly for people who just want espresso and want an upgrade from Starbucks espresso or to make their own lattes, which isn't hard to do as their coffee is burnt acidic trash. You can get a good espresso machine for the general populace for 160$ on a sale. not 300$ which most people would scoff at you for telling them is entry level.

A slow steamer is actually better as you can get more air into the milk. Is also why chilled milk is better as you can steam for longer.

The other thing is if the grinder breaks in the express you have a problem. With the Bambino you just buy another grinder. I have the breville infuser which i absolutely love.

The time difference doesn’t matter at home since it’s such a small amount of time. The larger machine takes up less space and has a built in tamper.

I'd just get the Breville dual boiler and then you are set with a very solid and well-serviced espresso machine and then grow into better grinders as you fall deeper into the rabbit hole.

@@Ashhong1 I think it is at least that, but....with 2 boilers it can do a lot more. The Bambino is an excellent machine, but I know if I had bought that...I would soon want the functionality of the dual boiler.....but it is more expensive and takes up more space!

The Bambino doesn't have a gauge, and the pressurized portafilter is such a pain in the ass to clean.

I respect what Saeco or Breville does, but not for me. I would go with a lelit mara x or rancillio Silva or even a profitec who could be almost under 1000 box when you get a deal. The longevity and the reliability is worth more and tbh there nothing complex in coffee making .
