China, globalization and multipolar world in post-pandemic times - dialogue with Kishore Mahbubani

  • Recent years have seen the broadening of US-China tensions, highlighting a great-power competition in the 21st century. After an apparent impasse in the relationship, a recent US-China diplomatic meeting in Zurich, followed by an ice-breaking virtual trade talk, signals re-engagement between the two countries. As it was announced that a virtual summit between President Biden and President Xi has been set in motion by year-end, can we expect the veering of Sino-American relations in the near future?
“The final question will therefore not be whether America or China has won. It will be whether humanity has won,” says Kishore Mahbubani, in his renowned Has China won? The Chinese Challenge to American Primacy. Global issues like Covid-19 and climate change are calling for the reinvigoration of multilateralism, how can the world unite and make pragmatic developments in working towards a sustainable recovery?
In conjunction with the launch of the Chinese version of Has China won?, The Center for China and Globalization (CCG) is pleased to announce a virtual dialogue with its author, Kishore Mahbubani, to discuss the trends of globalization, the multi-polar international order and directions of US-China relations. Described by Foreign Policy as “the muse of the Asian century”, Mahbubani is a man of many titles, including Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS); former Singapore’s Ambassador to the UN; and Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKY School), NUS.

Credible and well informed and articulate Friends of China must present facts on China’s contribution to the world in climate change, and other achievements. China must have as good a marketing publicity in the West. I saw a title of a program from Australia’s 60 Minutes about the life styles the “elites of the Communist Party “ and it has 2 mil views. To Kishore's point that China to improve its marketing by providing facts and by testaments from friends, I think the former solution is limited but the latter solution can be promising. İn America and other parts of the West, facts are not held as truths but as alternative beliefs and all beliefs are equal to each other due to freedom of expression. Yes, China produces electric vehicles, but a counter argument might be that the manufacturing of electric cars and batteries is very carbon intensive. Yes, China might vaccinate a huge majority of its population and deliver countless vaccines to fellow countries, but a counter argument is that vaccines are bad. Yes, the Chinese might excel in higher education and STEM, but many Americans are no longer interested to these disciplines nor care about them. At the end of the day, facts about China will meet counter arguments because a great many people in the Western world are no longer brought up to accept truths. But they will accept testaments from friends because of the emotional appeal of relationships.

Kishore is right that China is lacking "Friends of China" army around the world the way the West have. Much of China's important contributions and accomplishments are rather unknown to the Western population. If CCG is listening, there are over 50 million overseas Chinese who can be mobilized to do the job. Yes, they are not citizens of PRC, some even don't read or write Chinese, and almost all grew up in liberal democracy and still call themselves people of Tang (唐人), but nearly all considered China (or 唐山) as their Motherland. All they need is an integrated platform that connects them back to 唐山 with information that they can incorporate back into their adopted countries. They have the nuance to connect with the Western population in a way that a China born Chinese can never have.
As an example, what if the entire PRC's Foreign Ministry spokesperson crew are replaced with qualified Singaporean, Malaysian or American Chinese crew? Will this make a huge difference?

As a nation, China needs to seriously engage in a thought reversal process. Appeasement never worked for any nation in the past. Power assertion is the only way to convey to bully’s that “time has passed - this is 2021, not 1841 - today, there is a new world order taking place - moronic hegemonic days of decaying western societies are over - military adventurism will be dealt with swiftly and total annihilation will only be the fate of aggressors”.
Unlike Japan, China should start opening up its border for potential immigrants from all over the world. This way larger humanity can enjoy the benefits of China’s super power status. This will benefit China in a long run where it will have much diverse population.

The declining power can retreat gracefully. But that is not in the nature of the US imperialist beast. It promotes military hostility, animosity, and black propaganda around the rise of China. If it is capable of any morality and humanity, the US could easily spend its military budget to build back its crumbling infrastructure. It’s ports are so broken and outdated that there is all this humongous logistical gridlocks at US ports.
It’s medical infrastructure was rated as No 1. But yet when put to some stress tests, it failed miserably. The software and the lack of unity to run the machinery is abysmal. So US should not be hubris about its structural advantages at various fronts. It lacks the juices the run any systems fluidly, except to bad-mouth, loud-mouth anything it does not like. There is no substance. Another recent laughable example is Biden’s bravado to challenge the BRI initiative with its usual gangs in the West. This too will fail miserably because Biden can’t even bring its own people, including the Republicans, to back the domestic infrastructure project. Which foolish lots would believe that USA could seriously help the Global South to build up their infrastructure?

Your statement Kishore that this problem is of structural form is a dead item but as my senior once said, we human being r alive & can think & adjust to situation as well b flexiable to accodomate to change. Yes, the initial blaming was started by that idiot Donny Duck but sleepy Joe could have approach this blaming in a different approach by negotiation but instead even increase its ferocity in blaming China in his effort to regain popularity. Joe, should have use the chinese Tai Chi method of side stepping this hatered genereted by having more discussional dialogue insted of shooting from the hip as seen in the Alaska meeting. By doing soon, of cause according by Newton's 3rd Law, action & reaction will b equal & opposite. That u & many should point out 2 many yankies & westerner. Their action toward China is the root caused. If many of u lot point toward US fault, then US will have no choice but to simer down. To ask China & US to come together now & talk will only anger the dragon even more especially US is the one that is continously punching & hitting out. Many of u lot should tell US 2 stop it straight away as they themself r already bloody but instead of forcing the other like the Limey & Diggers + even the mounties to join them to gang up on the dragon. What is hell is Western civilization?
The Romans were most engaged around the Mediterranean; what today is South Europe, West Asia, North Africa. They didn't have much connection to what we call the British isles or Scandinavia today, for example.
Then we have European colonialism. Is what ties Western civilization together, the European colonial powers and their offspring like US, Canada, Australia? But then what about Latin America? The natives were exterminated, and people with Spanish lineage are the majority now. Latin America isn't viewed and more importantly, isn't treated like it's a part of one civilization with the United States, for example.
What is perceived as this "Western civilization," is code word for the groups that are considered majority white at any given time. Previously, what we call Western Europeans today like the French didn't regard Eastern Europeans like the Poles as a part of the same civilization, and vice versa. The definition of "White," or "Western civilization," more appropriately should be "White civilization," is continuously expanding at the will of the imperialists.
