FRANCE ELECTION: Macron has failed! "Government vacuum!" Left-wing alliance surprisingly wins!
The left-wing alliance Nouveau Front populaire has won the parliamentary elections in France. The coalition ran to prevent the expected victory of the far right and won the most seats in the second round on Sunday. Marine Le Pen's right-wing populist party Rassemblement National (RN) finished in third place behind President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance.
According to the preliminary results published on Monday morning, none of the three blocs achieved the 289 seats required for a majority in the 577-seat National Assembly. The left-wing alliance won 182 seats, Macron's alliance 168 and the right-wing populist RN 143 seats. Despite missing out on victory, it was still the best result in history for the RN. The party had won 89 seats in 2022, its biggest success to date.
A parliament without a clear majority is a novelty in modern France, which means political turbulence is to be expected. "Our country is facing an unprecedented political situation and is preparing to welcome the world in a few weeks' time," said Prime Minister Gabriel Attal with a view to this year's Olympic Games. He wanted to offer his resignation to President Macron during the course of Monday.
However, in view of the major sporting event, he is also prepared to remain in office "for as long as duty demands", explained Attal. Macron's term of office still lasts three years. Attal expressed his disapproval of Macron's decision to dissolve the National Assembly and call new elections following the debacle in the European elections more clearly than ever before: "I did not choose this dissolution," he said.
