There is no mistaking this reprise. A goodbye in the grandest way, but with absolutely not one shred of ego on hand. And through my tears I heard him say 'We were broken then but now we're borderline' - almost his very last words to us. And I laughed - it hit me that he signed off with one of his brilliant comedic lines, then finished with simple words that he - as usual - honed to perfection - 'I wish there were a treaty between your love and mine'.

and yet, he actually sang "i wish there was" not "were"; i'm sure he knew better but, perhaps, felt it sounded wrong.
I laughed at that line, too! It's brilliant. Those who say this album is only sad are missing those little moments.

Can you imagine the sadness and pride in his son Adam Cohen who produced this masterpiece.
I saw Adam live in Manchester, England many yrs ago; he and his band performed a rock set!!! Yay! It was great! I was even mistaken for one of the bands roadies and got in early! Great memories!!! Miss the great man, followed him since I was 12!!! Now 62!!! Wow 50 yrs of Lenny!!!

I am 72 and discovered him when I was 16- heard him sing the Stranger Song on a Canadian made for TV movie… I think called the Ernie game. I was mesmerized
So many stories! 1982 … that would have been the tour for the Various Positions tour- yes that was one fine tour and one fine album!

When I first listened to this track (after listening to the rest of the album), I felt tears in the back of my eyes, coming to the realisation that this was (most likely) a final goodbye with his final song on his final album
I sure hope it's not his last :) Good news: In his recent interviews he's talked about making 2 more, if he can!

I'm coming from the future to tell you that a final, posthumous album was finished by his son and released in 2019.
Cohen was totally unique, totally original and totally magnifique!!
I wish there was a treaty. But as a Greek teenager I have been given too much by a man who was borned so many years before me and lived so away from me. Only such a generous and good man could unit in this way different experience and feelings.

Just like Dylan? To my way of thinking Mr. Cohen deserved a Nobel Prize more than Dylan. Dylan was not fit to kiss Mr. Cohen’s shoes.

@@larrylinn8589 they actually did at first....then dylan sold out while cohen stayed true to his art. they were not friends at all. one was a poet genius, the other pandered to his fans and wouldve rather made money. Cohen is king
