Landscape Photography without a Plan

  • As the saying goes, "fail to prepare, prepare to fail". When it comes to landscape photography, careful planning dramatically increases your chances of success, at least in my experience.
    When I am out with my camera, at least 90% of the time I know exactly what I am going to shoot. This approach has helped me to build a portfolio of images that I am proud of.
    However, as my photography has improved I have found myself moving away from shooting wide vistas to looking for something a little more intimate. This approach is less suited to planning and I am having to learn to find new compositions every time I go on location.
    In this video, I visit High Dam in the hills above the village of Finsthwaite in the southern Lake District. Instead of shooting scenes that I have researched, I decided to set of in search of something a little more intimate and a little more creative.
    At least, that was the plan...
