Saint-Paul de Vence in Provence, France, is really a very special town. It's an old village with a fortified wall around it with some stone structures that date back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and it had fallen apart in recent times, early twentieth century it was quite dilapidated - some of the old buildings were falling down.
But it has been fixed up like new. It's amazing, because the art industry has moved in. There are fifty galleries, workshops and studios here, of the highest quality.
There is one main lane in the village and we're going to walk you along its entire length from one end to the other and then back again.
The visitor enters the town through the vaulted passage of the main gate, and then makes his way by the inner guard, under a tower with a channel for the portcullis, that gate that could drop down to keep out the enemy, finally reaching the inside of the town.
Saint-Paul de Vence is quiet and clean, spotless, scrubbed, no hint of graffiti. It's full of picturesque lanes, of quaint corners and odd passages.
The official Tourist Information website is filled with useful information

@12:53 From Dec 2007-Oct 2008, I used to live in that apartment with the 12 over the door. In fact, I'm the one that purchased those numbers and put them above the door. Today, the 12 is still there, but it's been moved to the LH side of the door.

Visited this little village a number of times...One of the best holiday vacations in the world is to stay in the city of Nice. There are so many beautiful villages/towns like the above in the surrounding area. Not forgetting a visit to Monaco..

You are absolutely correct!! Nice itself is wonderful, and access to many nearby towns using bus and train is so easy. One could spend 2 weeks in Nice and never see it all. I have many movies about the area you can find in these playlists:

Love your newer videos of Provence towns. The older ones were also nice, but the new ones have higher definition videos which really brings out the beauty of these towns. Also a little shorter and focused, which better matches our times. We will surely visit this town when ve visit Nice later this year. Thank you.

Twenty years ago on a Windstar cruise from Barcelona to Nice there was a group of us that went to St. Paul de Vence and I was one of the most idyllic places I had ever visited. We skipped the bus back to the ship and spent the entire day with lunch, shopping and dinner and got a crazy ride down the hill back to the ship from a local taxi driver. I bought a beautiful watercolor of the town.

Wonderful that 20 years later it is still such a vivid memory. Good move to skip dinner on ship.

Dennis-I love your videos. They are so informative. We are going to St. Paul De-Vence in August when in Cannes on a cruise stop. We love the restaurant in Eze, Le Cafe du Jardin, and my Sister and BIL will be with us on this trip. They've never been to the South of France, so I'd love to have a similar type of view for our lunch that day. St. Paul has some nice restaurants, but I thought on the way back to Cannes, I'd try to find a restaurant with a view over the Mediterranean similar to Eze. Do you know of anything that would be close?

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  Před rokem

I'm glad you're enjoying them. Your route brings you through Cagnes-sur-Mer, so you might try a view restaurant there, as suggested in these links: www.thefork.com/restaurants/cagnes-sur-mer-c74974/with-a-view-t349 and www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g187220-zfp43-Cagnes_sur_Mer_French_Riviera_Cote_d_Azur_Provence_Alpes_Cote_d_Azur.html

@@denniscallan I reviewed those prior, and just went through them again. In the restaurants listed, most are right on the water, which we can get those views in Florida. Then from the plaza in the little town, the view is mostly of trees and buildings. Still trying to find a view over the Mediterranean from a hilltop town.

Schoene mitteralterliche Stadt, aber trueb u. langweulig ! Da fehlt es an " Farben " , wie Blumen , Straeucher u.a. die bluehen , Freude u. " Gute Laune " vermitteln.
Da gibt es so viel Moeglichkeiten , wie Jasmin Strauecher i. Kletterpflanzen, verschiedenste Rosen, Boughenwile...

You can say that, but it is a medieval town, within a wall, not much greenery, but 1) they have nice flower pots and 2) plenty of green hills all around. 3) and beautiful town Thank you
google translate Beautiful medieval city, but sad and boring! There is a lack of "colors", such as flowers, bushes and others that bloom, convey joy and "good mood". There are so many possibilities, like Jasmin Strauecher i. Climbing plants, various roses, boughenwile ...
