I just did a sound system upgrade on my 2009 Tacoma replacing the stock double DIN stereo with an Alpine stereo and President McKinley in the slot below. Thankfully I was able to reuse the factory side mounting brackets to firmly screw in both radios.
Nice install. Yeah I used to be a Cobra CB radio fan....but after buying my Mckinley radio for my mustang. It fit right into the dash, and the quality was excellent. Been sold on President lately.
@@jeepingeo I am not sure on the brand of the bracket. I bought an A/M radio from Crutchfield, and asked for a double DIN bracket, and they provided me with one. Worked like a charm
Nice to see some Cobra 18 love. Anyone who bashes a Cobra 18 is an idiot. These are workhorse radios that can easily be peaked/tuned. I've had one for near 20 years now. Just recently upgraded.
Absolutely ,, I have two of them , I ran one of them for years on a 102 steel whip on the trunk lid , dead center of my Honda Accord and a Killer Bee 250 ,, my other one is a NEW OLD STOCK I use just for weather , but I have a 3rd as well new in the box I’m fixin to have tuned up and make my daily in my off-road play truck 💪🏼
I've seen a guy that changed out the final in his that gave it about 25 watts swing. I thought about trying to do it to mine, but I decided to keep it stock. The Cobra 18 is a great little radio for sure.
And the content keeps rolling out! I know you mentioned you have another 60 in the hold, to get you through the dip, during Winter....Let's see if you get one of those this year! Or you may be in a t shirt in January again, lol. Any how's great install, genuine excitement from you, so congrats on that, probably been enjoying for a short while now .....And zip ties...... A get out of jail for everything, wish l knew about them 30 years ago on antenna installs and rig set ups. I would have been forced to drill new pilot holes in the bracket. .....Look forward to everything you do next , appreciate all your work, and ideas. Thank you Erik, and sometimes your wife holding the camera (in the 40" satellite install). Till next time......

Great install , looks great . I would lean toward the SWR is probably a little better than 1.5 ,, for a stock radio doing 18 to 25 watts PEP .. even if it is a 1.5 will not hurt anything at all and is very acceptable. But here is something to keep in mind ,, when you removed the 3 foot jumper from the meter ,, that’s where the change took place 👍👍. Take a barrel connector and just simply add a 3 or 6 feet jumper and leave inline ,, and check again and I’m betting it will drop back down .
I run the President McKinley in my work rig, and I’m very pleased at its performance. When I bought it, I had the place peak and tune it right away. So hopefully it continues to perform well!
Nice!! I had the same cobra in my 4runner. It’s a okay radio. Little noisy and hardly any features. Replaced it with a McKinley. Woah baby!! Love it!! I had the same install issue with the McKinley. Instead of zip ties I used the thumb screws for the U bracket and in the Toyota bracket there is a spot where screw will tighten against the oem bracket. Just another option.
I think it's nice setup but I'd be concerned about the radio not being able to vent properly, those fins on the back are there for a reason. And If long periods of communication was needed I'm sure it would get a little warm being confined.
I bought the metal zip ties for mine. Should last longer than plastic ones. EDIT: I've decided to try to taking off the top cover of the CB, and bottom cover off the radio and use the smallest size pop rivets to secure them together completely flush. To separate them again, I'd just drill out the pop rivets. It'll be a fun project to take time and do on a day off. I have a President McKinley CB and 2004 Toyota Tacoma.
About the last SWR reading ...Perhaps the coax was pinch when everything was push back insiste the DIN compartiment ? Always enjoy WatchIng your Channel 73’
Great informative video. Your jumper coax for the SWR external meter is probably 3ft. you may try adding an SO239 jumper with that 3ft of coax. this will likely lower your SWR.
CB has a line level/speakers output. your radio has an aux input. should have wired this so you get the CB's audio on the car radio. also, >zip ties would not do that on my Duster.
I run the same set up Walker ii & 102 whip... no complaints! Decent setup! Been thinking about throwing a linear in there with it?? Only thing is my SWR is running about 2 I don't want to burn up nothing.
In my 84 chevy there was plenty of metal dash to screw a bracket into. In my '19 F150 its all plastic. Do I have to screw the bracket into metal (for grounding)? If so, and i screw to plastic, should I run aground from bracket to chasis somewhere?
Thanks for this install video, I'm just about to do a similar install in our Jeep XJ. Any idea what that bracket was that you used to hold the old CB and radio together? Also was just wonder since you made a video in the past about the President McKinley with the front facing speaker, why you didn't just use that radio again for this truck?

There will be much more traffic on the CB ,, depending on your area . I say just keep saving up some money and have one of each !! Look into getting the GMRS 70 dollar license so you can use repeaters legally that’s in your area
Eric I’m curious your thoughts on this. You’ve been working with this cobra for 8 years, have you ever used the SoundTracker system? If so, does it work well or better than a standard ANL? Would love to hear your feedback.
When I was using the Cobra 18 the soundtracker didn’t make it more quiet. It made the hiss louder but also amplified the voices. I thought it was kinda lame.
@@FarpointFarms sound tracker radios work better with other sound tracker radios johnny jones tested them a few weeks ago and he tried to explain it but i am not a radio tech so i didnt fully understand what he was talking about

If you wire that CB direct to battery you will eliminate some of that ignition noise I herd.

Good radio bad thing is you can not add upper or lower channels only unlock the clarifier for side band.
I think I would use Command adhesive strips to keep the radios from moving...

you will need to ground it- the idea of running a ground is a good one if you have a good place to do so.

That’s the OEM radio bracket that Toyota uses.

What do you like better the president cb or the Midland mxt400 GMRS?? I don't know what type of band I should go for my vehicles.

Pretty much my thoughts. CB has a much larger user base, but GMRS has greater range. It's a toss up so get both!

I used it on and off over the years and I honestly feel its a gimmick. I never felt that is was anything better than ANL.
