    I just wanted to come here and say I did my real first repair a few days ago (I am a total newbie at any repair using the soldering iron). I have a multimeter that stopped working when I needed it (I actually forgot it did not work). It was not a big deal, but it would have helped a lot. Anyway, I was already looking for other multimeters when I decided to open it up and check it, after also talking to friends and colleagues that are better than me at electronics. I did a sort of a diagnosis as I saw Vince do here and it looks like the ground connector just did not make contact anymore (it fell off as soon as I opened it up). I soldered it back and now my multimeter (the reasonably expensive one) is working again. I also soldered the other 3 just to be sure I won't have issues in the future. It felt good knowing I was able to fix it by myself and that I did not have to throw it away and buy a new one.

    I'm so glad that people are still keeping hold of these old games and selling them on EBay, even broken ones, instead of them going into landfill

    • @unitedfools3493
      @unitedfools3493 Před 2 lety

      There appears to be a strange preoccupation with landfill. We are in no danger of running out of room. The entire US landfill system occupies about 35 square miles.
      Avoiding placing stuff into it really doesn't have any benefit.
      Meanwhile NASA is predicting that the Earth will no longer support human life within 50 to 200 years because of nothing to do with landills.

    • @Valveus
      @Valveus Před 2 lety

      @@unitedfools3493 Yeah, I've heard that before about the amount of landfill, quite surprising really. I've also heard an argument against recycling paper because the less demand there is for newly produced paper, the less amount of trees there'll be because manufacturers won't need to grow as many. Recycling plastic and metal are important though because there's only a finite amount we can get out of the ground

    Hi Vince, when reinstalling old components that have fallen out of their solder joints, clean and tin the pins to improve chances of long term success. I usually gently scrape the pins with wire cutters to remove oxidation and expose clean metal then tin and reinstall. This also reduces the amount of heat necessary to remake the solder joint avoiding damage to components (especially sockets with plastic bodies). Great video.

    I had this as a kid in the US. From memory, it was branded Coleco and called Bank Shot (which I only remembered when you read it off the back of the game). I remember the box being similar or even exact (with the Snooker balls) but no celebrity endorsement. To us in the US, it was a pool table, but the red balls on the box flew over our heads. The 8 ball game selection has a flashing (#8) ball to sink last.

    Those pins for the powerjack are awfully short. No wonder they came loose when the game got knocked or whatever. It's really fun to see what they managed to do with their "low tech" back then. This surely has more "flair" than a basic modern game. For the short pins of the powerjack: I would have put component legs on them to extend them a bit and give them more material to be soldered onto the board. I don't think the jack will come off anytime soon, but it would have made the connection a bit more secure. It's really fun to see vintage things like that being repaired. Very satisfying, even if it wasn't me who fixed it ^^;

    No fast forwards, was great, fade in fade out perfect, taking apart putting back together despite the fact it's just taking apart in reverse, love it. Although this was a short Tea break video it was very enjoyable. Now as far as long videos, i'm watched many youtubers fix laptop tops or games that are well over an hour with NO fast forwards or even fade in and out. The learning aspect of it is higher and watching the complete testing/fault finding equally enjoyable. Point is, unless you're done for the day don't fast forward, show us how you find faults, how you test even if you think it's boring myself and others don't.

    You are obviously too young to remember HP/SP batteries - good old zinc-based cells, none of your new-fangled alkali thingies let alone Lithium Ion! 😀When soldering the jack I would advise holding the socket on with kapton tape, soldering the CENTRE pin first, then while holding the socket tight to the board with your finger reflow the solder on the centre pin. Once this is nice and solid and flush to the board you can solder the outside pins at your leisure. Keep the videos coming - it's fascinating seeing stuff from my youth. Kids these days don't know how good they've got it... grumble... moan... 😜

    Snooker is very popular in China, last time I went there my brother-in-law who is Chinese took me to a snooker hall. They had girls working there who put the balls on the table after potting, it was quite off-putting having my terrbile skills watched by a stranger!

    Love this video. I have this game in mint condition. Could you or anyone tell me which adapter is needed? I know it says in instructions a 9 Volt AC Adapter but not all will fit as this game had a size specifically to fit. Anyone know which size? Thanks in advance.

      I guess it's difficult to appreciate how exciting "electronic" games where back in the 80s. There was a limited amount of devices and prices would also be a factor. Kids these days are surrounded by electronics and I suspect they all have a smart phone now with access to an almost infinite amount of games & videos!
