I’m so glad and lucky to have seen this video when I did; my best friend is coming to visit me in Japan for 2 weeks and hadn’t considered the need for WiFi/a stable means to connect (she’s never flown outside the US before). She’s also a big PokémonGo fan, so now she’ll be able to play freely!

I was in Japan about this time last year, and the apartment I stayed in (through AirBnB) came with a pocket WiFi. I was surprised by how fast the connection was and that the battery would last a whole day. Even though I have unlimited international roaming on my cell plan, I would default to the WiFi because it was so much faster.
I always recommend renting a pocket WiFi to people traveling to japan now.

There are other sim card options. You can get prepaid sims from Rakuten. It is super cheap, better for longer stays, as in more than a month. I uses it during my stay on exchange, could get it recharged at convenience stores. Can cancel anytime as well.

We were in Tokyo for a one day layover coming back to the US from Thailand and we rented a portable wifi at the airport. It cost us about $25 or $30 just for one day rental! We are planning on going back there again next year and were worried about what to do regarding internet. Thank you so much for making this video! We will for sure check this out on our next trip back to Tokyo.

I used this exact same wifi when I was in Japan this past August (2017). It myself, and two friends that were connected to the device at the same time. We would basically have it on from 8:30am when we would leave to go explore for the day till anywhere from 8p to 10pm at night when we got back to where we were staying and the battery lasted the entire time. The only time the wifi ever cut out was when we went through a tunnel in a mountain outside Sonobe.

I used this wifi service when I visited Tokyo last year for the first time.
I booked it via CDJapan before I came to Tokyo.Then I had them deliver it to the hotel I would be staying.
When I checked-in to the hotel my wifi device was already waiting for me.
Very convenient.
At the end of my rental period I just had to put it in the return envelope they provided and drop it off at any mail box (in Japan).
I rented it for a week, no problem at all.
Make sure you have a good phone that could fully utilize the wifi bandwidth.
At the time I had a old slow phone and it couldn't keep up with the wifi.
I guess this was my travel story LOL >_<

I travelled to Naples, Italy back in July and had no WiFi outside the hotel or data while traveling the area. It was peaceful for sure and I felt I enjoyed the trip a lot more when I was disconnected.
When I was in Portugal over the past year there was a company that had a portable wifi device for €20 a month. I wish I had known about it sooner because I would've never gotten a Sim card haha. For anybody that may be going to Portugal long term, go to Nos and grab one. Otherwise, Sim cards are €5 and putting €20 on your account will last you a month so long as you're not a data burner haha.

@@TokyoLens i moved to Ishikawa-Ken, Komatsu-shi, been using a SoftBank 300gb chip and a pocket wifi, decided to completely skip getting a Japanese phone plan, they are thieves, instead got this and a cheap skype japan number signature to get a japanese number.

I do a lot film making in Japan and I use the SIM card option all the time to contact people to work with. It really depends on who you get it from. I always get mine from Edion (DeoDeo to those that haven't been to Japan in the last 5 years) and it works amazing for me.

I had never heard of a pocket wifi until I mentioned to a friend I was going to visit japan and he recommended that I rent a pocket wifi. I used a different company than the one in your video to rent (and boy is it expensive) but it was fantastic (google maps saved my life). Then when I was going to europe I was looking to rent one again (but my god were the reviews and prices horrible). For people that travel to different countries a lot, I recommend just buying a pocket wifi router (on amazon or something) and when you get to the airport buy a data sim and you can connect any wifi device, like your phone (so if you're in a group of friends you can split the cost of the sim too). But i make sure to buy the sim from a person at the airport, so that they can make sure that it works properly. I've had mine for 2 years now and been to 4 different countries with it, and had no problems. When family comes overseas to the states I just go out and buy a data sim and let them use it while they're here (haha maybe i should start renting it out).

Used the same pocket WiFi in April and it was excellent. Got it through a different company that was cheaper at that time. The only place service dropped was about 15 minutes south of Aomori for a brief stretch on the shinkansen. We also went WAY over the amount of data they claimed without issue. Super positive experience.

When I traveled to Tokyo I rented a pocket-wifi. I can definitely recommend it. It was a pretty fast connection, it had great battery life, and it was absolutely easy to use. Renting it wasn´t very expensive, too. So if you are going to Japan for short-time-traveling ( < 4weeks) I think it´s definitely worth it :D

This is supper helpful. I am doing study abroad in the spring in Japan for five mounth. The dorms have WiFi but I wanted WiFi for out and about like I did when I visited before and because I have a friend coming to visit. This is perfect and saves me money. Thank's for such a good honset review. Also, I love your videos they are so good. I love Tuesdays now because of your videos and I love hearing the shamisen and may be able to try it at the school I am going to.
I've been using T-Mobile since 2015 and every time I go to Japan the connection gets faster, but it's still not fast enough for uploading videos on the go. So I have always made sure that the airbnb location I stay at has a portable WiFi. This can be a down as some of them are limited to either 200 MB per day or 800 MB per week. Some, however, have had unlimited data. iVideo will be a game changer for my next trip as I won't have to pass up on airbnb locations now for not offering a portable WiFi hotspot. When I studied in Italy, I rented a Nokia phone. It had texting, no data. I relied on the internet at my apartment (which was abysmally slow) or one of the buildings I had classes in. As I wasn't too attached to needing the internet everywhere (only upgraded to a smartphone when PokemonGo started), it wasn't that bad. xD I think some of my roommates rented the SIM card option, and had just as bad luck with them as your brother.
When my brother studied in Japan, though, he only had internet at internet cafes. All his Skype calls came in through there. He was there for the tsunami, too, and that freaked my mom out a lot because it was impossible to get ahold of him.

Nice video! I'll be staying in a AirBnB place in Shinjuku when I visit Tokyo in April and the owner has the iVideo so that those that stay in his place can use it. So far I've been renting the Wifi from Changi Airport (I'm Singaporean) renting it for Japan isn't cheap.

great video Norm. Another info for people traveling, a lot of air bnb places ovver the people renting the place a wlan router as well. very useful, you can take it out as well and use it withought limitation. BUT if you loose it, you will have to pay for it usually.

I rented this in 2018, same device, same sim (softbank) it works super well, I love how it is very intuitive to use (it will show sign if they lost signal or no internet), and it is touch screen too. I sometimes use it when I lost my friend, I usually check it first, whether they were still connected to the wifi or not, if yes that means they are close to me, and I can call them through messenger app. if not then big problem lol
the range is a bit problematic though, I would say 5 meters?
I went to many places with this device, to Kurobe (Keyakidaira, basically mountain), osaka, kyoto, kobe, hakone and tokyo, and this device conquers them all
btw, I rent it from HIS (Japan travel agent) and it costs me 8 usd a day, so 30 usd a month is a steal!

This is excellent info. Last time I was in Japan I was mostly fine with just the free wifi hotspots but did end up in a couple tough spots without any internet where I could have really used a map/directions. I will definitely be looking into this when I go back. Would have appreciated a little more info on the sim card rental option though. Sure the data is minimal but would it still be decent price-wise and location coverage wise if you're just going to use it for the occasional map/direction check?

I didn't really have any problems and I picked it up at the Lawson in the airport. The only issue I had is that I hadn't realized i still needed to check my email cuz what I actually needed to show the attendant was emailed I think the day before or same day. So i had just printed out the confirmation when I ordered it and thought that's what i needed so when I got there to pick it up I had a little bit of a struggle trying to tell her that's all I got. finally I ended up checking my email and realized i had a recent one from them. It was all in Japanese, but I showed it to the attendant and she gave me my stuff. lol. So pretty much just make sure you check your email near the pick up date. Pretty smooth process. I returned it at the airport the day of departure. It actually didn't fit in the redbox but I just handed in at the post office there. Oh . and I didn't have any problems with the pocket wi fi. Worked fine the whole time I was there and it had a lot of charge. i think I only charged it once
This past October while I was in Japan I went with option 4 and rented a pocket WiFi. The company i used sent it to my hotel and it was a lifesaver well more of a time saver. It allowed me to use google maps. I used it from Osaka all the way to Aomori. I uploaded my videos and pictures to social media with no problem. One piece of advice bring an external battery. It’s helpful in keeping your devices and pocket WiFi charged.

I scheduled it so I can just pick it up at the post office in the terminal. Came in just fine. Basic items: device and charger. All you have to do is turn it on and type in the wifi code and password thats located on the back of the device. Wifi is good, only downside is that if you are with a group and the person who is carrying the pocket wifi wanders away, no wifi for you. So if you stay together or by yourself, device works great. I got the Japan Pocket WiFi AU 4G LTE Unlimited data. Its not the best they had to offer, but it works.
Price is amazing too!

Hello, it was very affordable at ~$2 daily. TokyoLens' promo code works too, which was great for a discount. On the website, when you are ordering the pocket wifi, it asks you where you would like to pick up the device. I put to pick it up at Narita airport terminal 2 (where I was landing) post office. I just walked up to the person at the post office desk and told them I was picking up a pocket wifi. They ask for your name and passport. After looking in the back, they gave me the package which contained the device. Returning was really easy too. Put the device and charger in the envelope that comes in the package, write your name in the designated spot and just hand it to the person at the post office desk. Simple and easy!

Ha-ha, I will definitely have to remember to go for the Wi-Fi option when I visit Japan again! I think I used data roaming while I was there, and while it was only three days, man was the speed horrible! Luckily I was only using it for texting and Line, but I shudder to think what could have happened if there was an emergency. :-P
I just got back from a trip from Japan and I used the portable wifi that you recommended. I shared it with my girlfriend and it worked out great! It was way faster than the internet that T-mobile provided. The only thing that was kind of bad was that it dies about 3/4s of the way through the day, so either keep it off when you're not using it, or bring a portable power bank, which we had. We had really fast internet everywhere from Osaka to Nara to Kyoto to Tokyo and even in the subway and bullet trains. Total lifesaver! Thanks for the recommendation. Also, my unit arrived like a week before my trip started even though it said it should arrive the day before.

I used a pocket wifi the last time I was in Japan (May 2107) and I loved having it as my data roaming plan was like $10 a day from Rogers in Canada. I was able to play Pokémon Go throughout Tokyo and always have a transit map/Google maps so I didn’t get lost. It made I my trip a lot more easier than the first time I was in Japan as the only time I had wifi was at the place I was living at in Fukushima or at the hotel/hostel I stayed at in Tokyo. I would recommend it for anyone who gets lost easily or needs to be connected like me.

Hi Bobby Le - I paid $80 for unlimited wifi for 25 days. It was good 90% of the time. The only issue I had with the pocket wifi was that it did not work inside some buildings and underground on the train. Otherwise it was awesome. I would recommend. I suggest taking screen caps of google maps if you need to reference while underground. Otherwise it was awesome. I was live streaming and using skype with it majority of the time so was very useful. It was definitely the best price I could find. If you decide to use a sim, you will need to top it up, if you think you don't need much data then maybe a sim is for you. But pocket wifi was great. Also easy to pick up from the post office at the airport.
