Ah... PL-01 - also known as - Vaporware - vehicle edition.
Fun fact about this - when it was presented a good couple of years ago... I could not shake off the feeling that people presenting it had zero idea what this thing was supposed to be for.
They advertised it as a lightly armoured, close range support tank for use in urban environments, with anti-radar stealth capabilities. Pretty much all statements contradicting one another.
Light armour in urban, close support role - no, just no. When in close support, you want some decent protection.
Urban environment and anti-radar shielding - why? Urban environment basically denies large portion of radar equipment, while close range role means that that visual detection is most likely by far. If this thing was advertised as a recon and mid to long range support vehicle, it would make some sense...

-Big gun for its size, maybe even 130 mm. Probably would have to make it a side-loaded RAVEN cannon just so that it fits in the turret and the recoil isn't obnoxious

About thermal signatures. Having a a physical barrier between the heated parts and the tank do help hugely. This can be done by just covering your tank in branches, preferably pine, or having a dedicated 'coat' for the tank that you can see being tested in several nations already.
I can speak from experience that those can completely mask a tanks thermal image, especially from the front, and help camouflage it even better against the naked eye.

It really depends on the role they have to play as well. Backing up infantry in urban combat is a place where no amount of stealth is going to help, but creeping across a field/plan/desert at night, a bit of stealth would be useful to help you avoid getting spotted so early.

Talking about tracks... I think the aforementioned track technology is around. Band tracks, named because they're effectively large rubber bands, do wonders to reduce the noise given off by tracks. They do have their drawbacks such as difficulty in repairing them as well as lesser durability, but by removing a lot of the moving metal parts (rubber road wheels and pads can help make metal tracks quieter, but there will always be metal-on-metal interface with the drive sprocket and the track pins) it will undoubtedly reduce noise.
In fact, many lighter vehicles such as the M113 and the CV90 have been adapted to use band tracks, are relatively common on various heavy equipment used in construction and farming, and such tracks have been used historically on the US M3 series of half-tracks.
I don't think you can go wrong with using band tracks on a stealth tank, especially when said tank would be a recon vehicle.

We already have Stealth Tanks. Put a tank behind a hill, and you can no longer see it.
The reason why stealth technology is more prevalent in Air and Seagoing vessels is because there is nothing in between you and the enemy. You see them, they see you nothing gets in the way save for the occasional cloud or landmass. The Comanche (aka Stealth Apache) is the prime example as it was canceled, Helicopters rely more on the Terrain for its concealment than any electronic warfare. As for sea there is some stealth technology for surface vessels, but everyone knows the stealth vessel is the submarine.

Currently, my sci-fi series has tanks with electric motors in each of the six tires, and a supercharged six-cylinder generator providing battery power to them, and to the coilgun or railgun turret. (coilgun for command tank, railgun for regular)
An additional benefit to a hybrid electric system would be the simplification of suspension components, with no need to run driveshafts or brake hoses to the track/tyres, and the lack of need for a transmission.

1:50 Going along with this chain:
Cloaking seems out of the question for the time...
Railguns or coilguns as a main weapon might be effective as a main weapon on a stealth tank, if they would produce no smoke, and at the very least, less heat...?
Would a hovercraft be effective against seismic Radar, acoustic sound from the treads, and from kicking up too much dust? Combined with the fact that hovertanks would have to be smaller, they'd be the PERFECT low-ground stealth tank... Right?
So basically, the idea is... Thin Hovertank with a Coilgun as its base weapon; simpler than a railgun tank, still hits fast and hard to get out alive. After all, this tank shouldn't be fighting an abrams intentionally.

    • @Marxman-bi5yu
      @Marxman-bi5yu Před 4 lety +2

I would imagine the system needed to lift the tank off the ground would probably kick up a lot of dusk, if not more than a tank due to having to rely on jets and fans depending on how it's handled. That say though if the railgun/coilgun or other gun that's not a traditional tank cannon has a low enough recoil that could actually potentially justify the hovertank despite it's flaws. The main problems I imagine would be A: Heat and B: Dust, so maybe have some sort of skirt bellow the tank that catches dust and blocks some of the heat radiated from the engine from being seen, after that you just have to deal with usual hovertank problems and you got yourself what equates to a Hetzer and a Hellcat having a scifi baby.

Honestly for stealth vehicles one major thing I do in games like space engineers is not even give the enemy a radar to find me with. Basically, if you can cut all comms & other basic systems, the enemy will have a harder time tracking your radar signature. Can't track what isn't there, after all. In fact if I play multiplayer, I likely combine a lack of radar with a high amount of camouflage to make me essentially invisible on my home terrain, and in space I try to match it up with the skybox, which usually involves a lot of black and dark blues. It's fairly easy to camouflage in Space Engineers, but it's also applicable to some real world ideas.

For long distance and highspeed travel, the diesel engine is used. For relatively upclose and short range, the e-motors take over. And the e-motors dont really need to be as powerful as the diesel engine coz despite that silent e-motor, all that speed will make alot of tire noise. So e-motor for stalking speeds.
Im not sure how effective (or how it even works, if it works at all) but the germans were testing demagnetisation tech on their new subs. Degaussing is the term if im not mistaken. They could apply that to tanks.
Road wheels r the best for acoustics without a doubt when compared to tracks, coz even with rubber pads, the clashing of metal between the links and the sprocket is a source of noise as well as heat.
RCS is probably the tougher nut to crack, but it seems someone already tried a crack at it.
Note that something like this, with all the above mentioned mods, will be horrible as an assault vehicle, but excellent for special ops/infiltration missions and these special vehicles can play role as the hidden command centre.
Basically a ninja IFV. A Shadow tank. Ooh.. that sounds nice 😂

For every measure, there will be a countermeasure. You will see detection systems that work on sound, IR, Ultraviolet, visual, radar, chemical detection, vibration, magnetic, etc... Then you you see infantry using some type of "painting" system to mark targets with a transmitter, radioactive element, or something to cover the tank to neutralize the stealth materials. I can see a forward observer calling in artillery with air burst ordnance with a substance to cover and neutralize stealth tech.

The most likely thing to be close to the function of a stealth tank would be an armored car or some other similarly armored wheeled vehicle with missiles or a recoilless system and an autocannon.
Hybrid engine able to cover a reasonable range electrically but is still focused on IC power, wheel flaps all around to avoid kicking up dust as much as possible, radar absorbing paint, shrouded autocannon barrel and receiver.
As much of a low profile as possible while still making it easy to evacuate the vehicle and operate the needed machinery.

Why do tanks have tracks? For weight capacity, ground pressure reduction and improved traction.
    - For light tanks / IFVs, can we use something that doesn't have the disadvantages of tracks? Yes. Tires.
A 6-wheel or 8-wheel setup can trade off armor for mobility to focus on the middle & outer layers of the Survivability Onion. If you use wheels that are both numerous enough and fat enough, you can keep ground PSI down to acceptable levels.
    - By using wheels, one automatically gets savings in weight, sound, seismic & heat generation. This in turn, allows for a smaller power-train, further reducing weight, space, sound, heat and exhaust. The weight of a tank's track assemblies (the track blocks, road-wheels, drive sprockets, etc...) exceeds 10 tons. That's 1/2 a Stryker's curb weight and 2/3 an MRAP's curb weight.
    - Basically, don't use tank tracks unless you *REALLY* need the extra weight capacity and traction those give.

The CV-90 series probably encompasses this concept of a single chassis type for all uses better than any other track system currently in use. And the type already has been demoed with "Rubber-Band" type tracks which greatly reduce the audio signature of the vehicle as well as lowers crew fatigue.

However a hybrid setup, where the system can run fully electrically for small periods of time (stealth combat, ambush, recognisance) and use the engines for normal operation/charging sounds like a more reasonable compromise, specially since the electric motors can generally replace the mechanical transmission, saving space.

"Reducing a tanks magnetic signature is more difficult"
If you have an electric engine yes. But except for that, amagnetic steel does exist. Germany uses it in its submarines to prevent them from being tracked using magnetometric satellites, though most nations they build their subs for opt for american submarine steel instead because its much cheaper. I cant tell you if that steel would be of any use for building tanks, but considering that demagnetizing steel hulls in ships has been around eversince the invention of magnetic detonators in WW2 and probably even earlier than that, i dont think that making amagnetic tank steel or tank steel that can be demagnetized is that much of a challenge, especially considering that warships still have to deal with gun attacks, though less frequently nowadays, and submarines usually not at all, and steel doesnt care wether that gun thats aiming at it is mounted to a tank or a ship.

A pure electric drive would require a new type of non-chemical electrical storage/generation, i.e. small scale fission/fusion. We're unlikely to see such systems soon. Current high-end electrical storage is lithium-based, which has less energy per ton and per unit of volume than diesel. Also you can't draw as much power out if they get to hot or cold, while diesel always releases a set amount of energy. Lithium is also expensive and burns forever--for efficiency, lithium power packs are made of thousands of small cells. Once one cell burns, it damages the casing of the surrounding cells which WILL catch fire sometime, up to days later. It's called thermal runaway. Also, lithium takes a long time to charge--a full day or more. Instead of refueling by fuel hose, you'd have to crane out multi-ton power banks and replace them, then hook those banks to a charger and pray your logistics trail is uninterrupted for a full day.
All in all, pure electric drives are currently the opposite of what tanks need for a power supply. The deficiencies of petroleum burners don't hold a candle to the benefits.
All of that said... A hybrid-electric recon tank/IFV that can sneak a few miles on pure battery could be useful, especially on a picket line.

I thik you're right, i mena the stealth will be only on recon light tanks, i belive the same, but i think since almost every modern tank has heat visions, the "heat stealth" could become the part of any future MBT. Since it's a bit less likely to detect it to far range (there won't be a small white point in the gray stuff). And i think camo is still an important thing, and if they will make this, it will be even more, becouse if the heat vision can't spot it on the battlefield, than they have to cover it from human eyes.

I'm guessing the thermal pads are based on some sort of peltier technology or something like that. If so, it is probably possible to embed them within the armor of a tank (or a thin outer armor) rather than use those bulky looking tiles. Heck, a flexible film or sheet is probably not too far off, which would make covering a tank a lot easier.
Whatever form thermal camouflage takes though, it probably wouldn't be too hard to control them to maintain a thermal "image" while moving--imagine projecting an image on a rotating object. Despite its rotation the image stays the same. Only now there's no projector, just a dusplay covering the entire object.

Infantry support is the main role of tanks, and part of this is bunker busting, so it is basically the same. Exploitation suffers from mines and ATGM traps. Probably more so than ever the Tank' s major role is infantry support.

Electric engines would presumably reduce the seismic
signature as well. Since you discussed electric engines, a big problem with electric engines is that batteries and/or fuel-cells would pose a new fire/explosive hazard to the tank and it's crew that would have to be accounted for and worked around, especially if battery and fuel-cell technology continues to improve (which there of course is no guarantee that it will).

Full stealth makes sense on an aircraft as those systems weigh less than the amount of armor needed to defend the aircraft and pilot.
For tanks, weight is less of an issue, but still can be a problem with logistics and associated transport vehicles. So full stealth doesn't really make sense. Having reduced thermal signature is by far going to be the best return on investment followed by radar cross section reduction and lastly acoustic dampening beyond things that are likely to happen anyway like a hybrid electric powertrain and rubber/ composite tracks instead of metal ones.

It's capable of serving in different roles(20mm cannon, 50mm and 75mm turrets historically), and it has a stable wheel axle system. So design a vehicle of a similar design, then give it an electric engine, an armor covered in an alloy of ceramic-meta material coating. The ceramic should reduce it's thermal signature, and the metamaterials (if you use negative-metamaterials), should minimize it's visible form. It's experimental of course, but it should work.

Since urban fighting is only going to increase, will there be purpose-designed vehicles? and what would they look like?

USA has JLTV's and IFV's, focussing on speed. Many western nations also have lots of IFV's
Russia has a few prototype BPMT Terminator tanks, focussing on fire support.

What about a return to the idea that tanks are expendable similar to what was experimented in the early days of the Cold War. For example a mbt that has enough armor to stop small arms fire but easily get penetrated and destroyed. The trade off being lots of firepower for low survivability. This could allow for more “stealth tanks” while maintaining their current effectiveness
