Mikhail Gorbachev visiting East Berlin for the 11th Party Congress of the SED, 1986

On the occasion of the 11th Party Congress of the SED in 1986, Mikhail Gorbachev visits East Berlin and is greeted by Erich Honecker at Schönefeld airport with a brotherly kiss. A military ceremony is only held at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Soviet Memorial; other places in Berlin such as the Marx and Engels Monument, the Schauspielhaus or East Berlin factories are visited by the Gorbachev couple surrounded by many onlookers and in dialogue with the GDR population. The focus of the trip is Mikhail Gorbachev's speech at the party congress, in which disarmament in Europe, East-West dialogue and reforms of socialism are core topics.
